Hello all! Following on from last year's shoegaze special, this week I'm looking at another of my favourite shoegaze tracks. As I say in the video, there's nothing too hard to play here, but some really memorable and interesting parts from a great and underrated band.

Here's a link to the video -

https://youtu.be/c3ZustU4DDk

I've tabbed it all out  below.

The video also marks the debut appearance of my electric 12 string. 12 string requests, anybody?

Speak next week,

Adrian

Hi Adrian loving the channel, where's the LUSH backing track audio to play along to? I'd like to drop it into pro Tools for Practice I need to get my strum up to speed. Also the released version seems to be about a semi one down? Wonder if they played it too fast and slowed the tape down. Live it seems to be standard.

Hi Adrian great lesson, I was unfamiliar with this band, thanks for making the connection for me! Also stumbled onto this band Moon Duo recently, not exactly shoegaze but mining Spacemen 3 territory, love this airy guitar work over two chord vamps. If you haven't heard of them, you might like them, most recent album I think mixed by Sonic Boom in fact, here's a cut https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlBMsnPi93M . Re other 12 string songs, how about another selection from the third VU album? http://velvetforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=145661 thx Ralph

Steve Anderson

Fantastic lesson thanks Adrian. I saw this on Miki Berenyi's twitter: Miki Berenyi @berenyi_miki · 9h Blimey, I wish I'd had access to this when I was having to relearn the Lush set for the reunion gigs. Plus, I have learned the phrase Phrygian dominant

Matthew Bockbrader

Is it me or is the tuning off on the recording? I've been trying to make adjustments so I can play along in Transcribe! to no avail. Any tips?

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, it is - was going to mention that in the video. Can't remember if it's either slightly sharp or flat. You should be able to match it using Transcribe - just nudge the fine tune up or down a few cents until it sounds good.

Can't wait to get onto this track, new Patreon/subscriber here. 12 string, some Byrds has to be in there somewhere!? :)

Richard J. Orlick

Didn’t think I was going to like this but I did. A nice jangly groove if I may say so. Speaking of jangly, Feel a Whole Lot Better or Turn, Turn, Turn by the Byrds would sound terrific on that Eastwood.

Rob Crawford

Noticed your 12 string in the background the previous week, but was stupidly busy with work. For some proto-shoegaze try the Rain Parade albums (later to spawn Opal and Mazzy star) plus their guitarist was in Crazy Horse, so you know it will have something in there to look at. As for 12 string stuff I will raise mention the Byrds Everybody's Been Burned as an oft ignored song Quite a few XTC tracks (along with their alter egos The Dukes of Stratosphere) Though Kersty MacColls version of New England may require the speed it's played at to be reviewed a little BTW any idea who played guitar on that as it's a bit before the time that Johnny Marr worked with her?

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi Rob. Some excellent ideas there. Not familiar the Rain Parade albums so I must investigate that. Top Byrds and XTC suggestions, will make a note of those. And I'll revisit New England, I've always loved the song but no idea who played guitar on it.

anyonecanplayguitar

Haha, Miki from Lush knows I exist! Always very nice and flattering to get a reaction from the actual artist.

Quick question on reverb pedals and shoegaze: you used the reverse reverb pedal for the ride video but only the "standard" reverb Strymon BlueSky on this one. Can a reverse reverb pedal do the job for both (reverse and "standard")? If so, what would you recommend ? Thanks a million for your website and videos, by the way. It´s been great for me

Rob Crawford

If New England was a couple of years earlier I would have though James Honeyman Scott. Oh yeah another 12 I neglected to suggest was Stairway .... (no not really) but actually Mirror in the Bathroom by The Beat Thought it may be suited as it has a fair bit of 6 string palm muted themes and the really cool 12 string bits could be covered with a suitably toned 6 string (possibly with subtle chorus on it.) Thanks for the interesting lessons each week as I love the mixture and too many channels seem to get stuck on genres

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi Niklas Welcome on board here, hanks so much for the support. Yes, definitely planning to look at some Byrds later this year.

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi Jesus. Yes, if you want versatility I'd go for a reverb pedal that has several modes and can do both reverse and more standard reverb sounds. The Digitech RV7 that I use is a bit of a shoegaze classic but sadly no longer made. (I got mine on Ebay.) A lot of pedals don't have reverse modes, but the The EHX Ocean's 11 does - looks great, though I've not tried it personally. Hope that helps.

Tracy

Thanks Adrian, I'm enjoying playing this (saw Lush in Philadelphia way back in 1996!). Do you know Love Tractor (from Athens, Ga, early-mid 80s)? They might be able to be classified as a kind of early Athens/Southern shoegaze... Your comment about Lush's guitars not being complicated, but still making great songs with interesting parts, made me think of them. A few favorites: Rudolph Nureyev, Sixty Degrees Below, Pretty (do you have a clarinet in addition to that melodica?). Thinking of A New England, but not-12-string-style, I love Billy Bragg's "chop & clang" playing on the original (and in general). I also really like his Peel session cover of John Cale's Fear Is a Man's Best Friend. Best, Tracy

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi Tracy. not familiar with Love Tractor, but it sounds like it would be my kind of thing. Will take a listen to the tracks you mention. (My wife has a clarinet that I'm sure she wouldn't mind me borrowing!) Billy Bragg is great - not heard the Peel session track, but will take a listen. Thanks!

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Rob. Will revisit mirror in the Bathroom this week - not heard it for a long time. Good suggestion.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I think I came across Moon Duo a few years ago but haven't heard anything they've done recently. Will have to take a listen to their latest album - the track you linked to is excellent. And I'm always up for doing some more Velvets. I forgot there's quite a bit of 12 string work on the 3rd and 4th records. Will have to revisit them this week.

+1 for some Byrds lessons.. All your country 3rd, 4ths chord theory, major scale and finger style style country/blues/folk stuff on one band! Actually throw in Moby Grape as well!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, seriously thinking about doing some Byrds soon - would definitely tie in well a lot of the other stuff I've been doing. Was actually watching an old Roger McGuinn instructional video this week, really interesting. Moby Grape would be cool - will think about it.
