Evening all! It's Nice Lick time once again. We're taking a simple 4 note idea and playing it with a triplet rhythm which creates an interesting kind of polyrhythmic effect. Here's the link:

And the tab is attached below (I've included the extra stuff I play at the start of the video too). The important thing here is not so much the lick itself, but understanding the rhythmic concept, then you can apply it to any 4 note phrase you like. Hope you have fun with it.

Speak next week,

Adrian

Practicing it right now, right along with you, Adrian. This is great -- thanks so much!

Oops, forgot my training on Britishisms, which is embarrassing given that my wife was born and raised in Edinburgh: "practising." :-)

Oh, and with regards to your question on whether you should do a Hendrix lesson (or lessons), or has Jimi been over-done by other instructors: were it not you, I'd be inclined to say there's probably no need for you to cover Jimi; however, given your signature approach to your lessons, I say a hearty Yes. Knowing you, you'll select a rarely taught Jimi song or lick, so you'll be able to teach us some of Hendrix's otherworldly mastery yet also introduce us to an aspect of his playing most of us might miss or overlook because we don't have your ear.

You could do Hendrix for the rest of the year and it would be fine with me. You have the quintessential Strat plus the Marshall stack. And nobody dials in the tone like you. How about If 6 was 9 or Spanish Castle Magic from Axis Bold as Love?

Yes, there seems to be some interest in a Hendrix video so I will try and make it happen. Either of the songs you mention would be great. As a younger player I was a total Hendrix nerd and knew just about everything, but I'm a bit rusty these days on some of those songs. Will need to get practising.

Thanks Boomer - yes, there seems to be some interest in a Hendrix lesson so I will try and make it happen. These days, just about everything has already been done, so all I can really do is bring my own approach as a player and a teacher to Hendrix and hope people find that interesting.

Hey Baby comes to mind for me for some reason. Just listened to it again and realized what a loose, jammy piece that is. But anything you wanted to do would be great. I've seen you do other songs that I thought there was no need for you to do until you did and I then found how much better you did them. I saw a guy selling a very detailed lesson on Hendrix's style, which is probably very good although I haven't bought it. But when you did something like your "More Creative Rhythm" lesson I thought that, even though you weren't talking much about Hendrix, you were covering the heart of some of what he was doing.
