Hello everyone. This week I'm looking at Sketch for Summer by The Durutti Column. This track came out in 1980 on Factory records, features production by the legendary Martin Hannett, and the sublime playing of unsung British guitar genius Vini Reilly.

This was a fun and challenging video to put together, since Vini’s style is so unique. But I’ve done my best to get to the bottom of what’s happening in this classic track. Here's the link -

This is one of the live performances that I based a lot of my version on -

And I've tabbed out (roughly) what I play in the video below. I think it's best to just use the tab as a guide and experiment with whatever picking approach works best for you. The most important thing is to bring out the melody. Hope you have fun with this one.

Speak next week,

Adrian

YEEES! what a great choice <3 The Durutti Column is such an underrated band

Henry Gascon

Your musical taste is impeccable Adrian. Well done once again!

Mattia Berselli

Hey I've asked for this song! thank you so much, can't wait to give it a go this weekend!

olivier michelon

well done, and the bird noises on the backing track...

Geoffrey Woodley

This is so good Adrian, not only as a lesson but as an introduction to some great music - I'd never heard of Durutti Column, which I'm sure will be met with much eye rolling by my much cooler fellow patrons! I have just bought A Night In New York from Bandcamp and the track called Arpeggiator is inevitably making me think about Fugazi and wonder if there is anything from their catalogue that you might be tempted to teach. This is why what you do is so rare and so valuable.

Jeff Sims

Three fantastic instrumentals lately. Appreciate the suggested work arounds for those of us with more 'tradesman like' fingers.

Thanks for this. I've had a few DC records for decades, never played them much. Just pulled them out two weeks ago and started playing them continuously. And now this. Spooky how you've managed to hack my analog audio player,

Peter Barabash

NIce one. It's been a long time since I listened to DC. Vini also did some great work on Viva Hate.

Chris Beaumont

Typically eclectic and wonderful choice. I've loved Vini's playing since these early days and have the vinyl to prove it, (fortunately not the sandpaper edition) but always thought it far beyond anything I was capable of. Your lesson makes it look possible so I'm relishing the challenge. 'Caught DC live a couple of times in this period and the most fragile yet powerful of gigs. Another coincidence, noticed that Guy Garvey played this track on his BBC6 show last Sunday so hopefully this will send a few more discerning players towards your excellent channel.

I love Vini Reilly as a guitar player, great choice, Thanks a lot

Hi Adrian. Absolutely brilliant! What a wonderful surprise! I’m a huge fan of Vini Reilly and The Durutti Column going waaay back. But I never would’ve had the courage to suggest tackling a track — a bit shy about suggesting things. Luckily, and as you say, your less shy viewers *also* have excellent taste in music!! ;) I also appreciate the thoughtful background story. Geez. Thanks so much! And really well done, as usual. (having discovered all things Factory by way of Joy Division in the early 80s)

I had never really checked out the Durutti Column before. I have now and what a revelation it’s been. This channel is fantastic. So much more than just helping to improve my Guitar playing. Thank you Adrian and everyone who puts forward all the wonderful suggestions.

Franz Vojtech

hey adrian, thanks for that great video! what about picking some YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS? maybe "brand new life"?? best, franz
