I was in the mood for a bit of Pixies this week. Hope some of you are too, since today I'm looking at the track Hey, from their Doolittle album. The solo is brilliant, but there are also some excellent rhythm guitar parts. Here's the link -

Tab is attached below.

And for those of you who are interested, I did an extra video last week, a review of the new KGB Fuzz from Valco. You can find that here -

It is of course essentially an ad for this specific pedal, but there's also some information on understating and using fuzz pedals generally which I hope some of you might find helpful.

Hope everyone has a great week! Speak next Friday,

Adrian

Amazing song, really liked the explanation about the pixies dynamic witch I think it is created by the tension between Black and Deal, a 90s recipe for success. I also love the new pixies records but it seems nobody cares about it anymore. What a great songwriter Franck Black is.

Love this song remember having a dodgy tape of Peel session in my student days. Always wanted to learn how to play it. Another fabulous lesson. How about some early Dream Syndicate like 'That's what you always say'? Pretty basic rhythm guitar but some wild lead histronics.

David Zahn

This was the last band I saw live (in SF) before lockdowns. They still put on inspired shows. How about 'Still Ill"? Perhaps less of a reach for some of us less advanced players than some of Marr's other pieces.

The Pixies and Jimi Hendrix are why I started playing guitar. This is such an excellent lesson in how they do what they do. MORE PIXIES PLEASE! Thank you Adrian.

On a similar note, I would love your take on Frank Black's Thalassocracy. The Lyle Workman solo at the end is a work of frenetic art that I just cannot crack. If you apply your amazing decoding skills to that end solo I would be in your debt!

I was worried there weren’t many comments on this great lesson! Thankfully picking up. Missed the Pixies first time through, fortunately saw them in Boston, when they got back together in 04. David Lovering must’ve been the happiest man alive as I think he’d been working as a magician. From my POV you could do lessons on this whole album, it’s that great! Take another listen to No 13 Baby, my all time favorite indie song outro.

My favorite Pixies song! I've learned some rhythm parts from a few songs over the years. They've become my go-to "campfire strummy" songs. This rhythm part seems so simple but is a good lesson in coordination. The solo is so fun to play! I need to learn more of those Joey Santiago solos. :) Thanks Adrian.

Great one Adrian, thanks from a band that changed so much

Yes, the tension between Black and Deal was crucial. Like most people I'm emotionally attached to the classic early records, but you're right the more recent albums have some very strong moments.

Thanks Toby! A Dream Syndicate lesson could work, I'll take a listen to the track you mention this week.

Yes, I've seen them a few times live, once in the early days at Reading festival here in the UK. Always great. Might well do a Still Ill lesson soon, a few people have asked!

Thanks Aaron - 2 brilliant reasons to start playing guitar. Might well do more Pixies, this lesson seems to have gone down quite well.

Nice suggestion. No promises, as it might be beyond my skills to figure out what's going on! But I'll take a listen this week.

Thanks Ralph. Yes, you're right it's a bit like with Raw Power I could end up working my way through the entire album, so much good stuff there. I must revisit No 13 Baby this week.

Yes, the songwriting is so good, most of the Pixies songs send up well in the strummy campfire kind of situation. And I love the Joey Santiago approach to soloing, melody and ideas always coming before showing off and heroics.

Thanks Jesus, yes certainly changed my musical life when I first started listening to their music.

I hate to admit I'm late to the party when it comes to the Pixies.. That said after your video lesson, I purchased their 1st two CDs and have been enjoying "new to me" old music! Thanks for expanding old dinosaurs horizons!
