This week I'm looking at a fantastic instrumental take on the country classic Ghost Riders in the Sky. It's a version by guitarist Neil Levang that I came across whilst browsing through YouTube videos. I thought it sounded great, so I obviously had to figure it out and turn it into a video. Here's a link to the original performance by Levang -

I've tabbed it out below. It seemed to be easiest to read if I notated it in 2/2 time so that's what I've done.

The backing is also to be found below. I've added a 4 beat count at the start. One of the slightly tricky things here is getting the gaps right between the phrases. You'll either need to just feel it by getting super familiar with the original recording, or you can study the tab and count bars and beats.

Have fun with it!

Hope you enjoy learning this one.

Speak next week,

Adrian

Love this! And, I love Salvador Dali taking time out to appear in the video!!

Mister Sowers

I was just plodding my way through some frustrating tabs this week. So glad you decided to do a proper version! Excellent stuff.

Jeff Sims

So much for what I had planned today...

Just joined up. Your probably the most entertaining teacher on the tube. Great sense of humour and not too shabby on figuring out great songs for tone deaf players like me. Thanks

Gordon Greaves

This is another great song! I have always enjoyed this Western tune. Excellent job Adrian! I will play this with my grandson. Neil Levang was a guitar player for Lawrence Welk. "Someone turn off the bubble machine!" The Lawrence Welk show was the cheesiest show on tv, but my parents loved it.

Gordon Greaves

He was also featured on YouTube with his version of another great guitar song that you may want to consider for a future lesson - a song called "Wheels".

Gordon Greaves

I am really enjoying some of the old tunes, but I surprise myself by also enjoying some of the newer artists (to me) such as Echo and the Bunnymen.

Thank-you, and welcome on board here. Glad to hear you find my attempts at humour tolerable!

Thanks Gordon. Yes, from what I've seen the whole thing looks hugely cheesy, but in a very entertaining way.

That's good to hear. I do like to look at a quite wide range of different styles, and I realise not everything is going to be to everyone's tastes, but it's always good to introduce people to artists they might not have heard before.

are you joking about sal dali?? lol

.Great...My parents had the vocal version on an old 78 think it was by some bloke called Vaughan Monroe...check out the Ramrods version and one by Duane Eddy with Arlen Roth.

Steve Kozak

Giddy up! Love it! Cheers Adrian!

Fabulous! I'll have to look into Kenny Vaughan since I don't really know his playing. Thanks for the link!
