Hello all,

Following on from last week’s perhaps slightly obscure song choice, this week I thought I’d head in the opposite direction and look at an all-time guitar classic: Apache by The Shadows.

I’ve gone all out with this one: it’s a two part, in-depth look at the track covering both rhythm and lead parts, theory, technique and gear. I thought I already knew this one pretty well, but I made lots of new discoveries whilst putting these videos together.

Part one which mainly covers the acoustic rhythm guitar part and be found here:

I was going to put part 2 out next week, but rather than leave people waiting, I thought it would be a better idea to put out both parts simultaneously. So here’s the second video which covers the lead guitar part, and examines the Hank Marvin tone:

Tabs can be found below. The rhythm and lead parts are in separate PDFs/Guitar Pro files. And the backing track will be in the next post.

Hope you find the videos interesting. Since I’m putting next week’s video out today, as it were, I’m going to be taking a break next Friday. (It’s Easter holidays here in the UK and I’m going to be busy with family stuff...) Which means the next video will be coming out on April 15th.

Speak soon,

Adrian

Thank you Adrian! My band will perform a cover of Apache this coming Friday. You really helped me and out rythm guitarist figure out the small details our ears couldnt pick up. Thank you for being so thorough! Thanks to you er already nailed All your Banshees songs, plus A Forest and Play for today! A little request at the end here. More The Cure! How about Push or Doing the Unstuck?

That's great to hear! Glad this lesson helped you out. Best of luck with the gig! And I'd love to do more Cure - will try and make it happen soon.

Aaron Deas

Oh, I am excited you doing this one! This is like classic spaghetti western meets surf.

Daevid

Instrumental guitar gold! Instructional guitar great!

Jas

On my to-wath list! Wouldn't trust anyone else except Adrian with this Golden classic.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, this has definitely got a bit of that surf kind of vibe to it. The Ventures did a cool version which you should check out if you've not heard it before. Hope you enjoy learning it!

anyonecanplayguitar

haha thanks Jas. Hope the video justifies the trust that you've placed in me!

Jas

Adrian out of curiousity did you try your jazzmaster with this? I know it wouldn't be "period correct" but just curious if you attempted it in private hah.

Great Adrian...I love those wonderful instrumentals of the late 50's Duane Eddy etc it has been said they saved the spirit of Rock n Roll.

Thank you for this! 🙏 I know it was a labor of love but I sincerely appreciate the calories spent documenting this wonderful piece of music.

I just love practicing and playing this song. working hard on the galloping part is hard for me though. I'm learning so much! thank you Adrian!

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi David. Yes, I think the galloping bit is pretty challenging. Keep working on it! Remember to keep relaxed, start slow and gradually push up the speed.
