Hello all. This week, some blues. For me, one of the most important parts of blues soloing is being able to outline the chord changes, particularly during the last four bars of the 12 bar cycle. In this video I show you how I approach doing this. There's a bit of theory, a discussion of phrasing and note choice, and plenty of tasty licks. Here's the link:

I've tabbed out the 5 examples I give in the video below.

Hope you enjoy it!

- Adrian

(edit: by popular demand, I've tabbed out the solo I play at the start of the video - also attached below.)

Another great lesson Adrian thanks! Please do more "playing the changes" over the blues & "outside" sounds.

Brian Scott

I don't comment much these days because how many times can one say "awesome video Adrian, thanks"! It applies to all of them. This one is no exception, cheers. Speaking of blues are you into Billy F Gibbons or old ZZ Top much? I am obsessed with some of his phrasing particularly in "Brown Sugar" but have trouble figuring it out for myself. Put it on your mountain of requests. Thanks again for "D is For Dangerous" by the Rev!

Top stuff! Could you tab the other 8 bars for next week's lesson!

You mean from my intro solo? I had thought about tabbing that out too, and will certainly do so if people are interested.

Thanks Niall. Yes, I might well do more lessons along similar lines. And I like the idea of looking at some 'outside' kind of sounds.

Thank-you Brian. Yes, I certainly like ZZ Top but I'm not that knowledgable about the Billy Gibbons style. But I'll certainly give it some thought.

That would be awesome, it was a great solo!

Dale Hanson

Yes Adrian, tab out the rest of it! Just joined today. Thanks, Dale

ex. 3 shows a nice way to use the BB King box!

in the GP file the first two notes should be triolic, I guess. little mistake...

Looks OK to me but I can fix it if necessary. Do you mean the pickup bar? I've written it as a swung 8th note on the & of 3, then a quarter note on 4.

1st thing: that is a gorgeous Les Paul! I’m so glad I came across your Patreon page. It’s an absolute treasure of information. I’m a YouTube noodler and I’m always jumping from one instructor to the next but I need to spend some time on this lesson. You’re right that the last 4 bars in the 12 bar are extremely important. I have been playing most of the licks that you have here but you put them into a professional sounding sequence. I’m really loving the 5th example and the run up on the 4 chord caught my ear. I’ve been playing something similar but it’s backwards where I go C,B A. I rake the C, vend it up and choke it off. Same with the B and then rake the A but without the vend. The problem is that I can’t always do it cleanly or fast enough. Your version is awesome. I’m not out to copy licks, note for note. I just want to learn how to play with intention and I can feel it with your playing so I’ll be Patrionizing you and your site. It really is like finding the gold at the end of the rainbow!

Hi Craig! Good to have you on board here. And thanks for the kind words about this lesson. I'm really glad you've been finding some of the licks helpful. There are so many possible variations, and I like the idea of absorbing some of the general ideas and concepts then putting your own spin on them. Hope you continue to enjoy the videos. There's quite a lot of other blues content on here - if you do a search on my home page you should find tabs and links to more videos.
