I realise there's not been much acoustic stuff lately, so I thought I'd fix that by looking at a beautiful fingerstyle track from one of my favourite singer-songwriters, Townes Van Zandt. Here's the link -

There's nothing too tricky to play here, provided you know a few basic fingerpicking patterns. (If you don't, then check out the lesson I did a while back on fingerstyle essentials.)

I've tabbed it out below. The tab is based on the Live at the Old Quarter recording. I've written out the intro and the first couple of verses. After that it's really just the same thing with a few minor variations. Hope you have fun with it!

Speak next week,

A new patreon here! What Ap do I need to open the .gp file? I have no problem with the .pdf file.

Hi Gary. You'll need the Guitar Pro app. It contains the same content as the tab so it's optional, but nice if you want to playback the tab, edit or change the speed.

Always the best song choices. Can't wait to check it out!

Hi Ade. Any chance you could do another John Fahey Xmas number for us this year? Cheers!

Thanks for this one, and yes Live at the Old Quarter is Townes' best recording; just him and guitar at his peak, without the syrup of added overdubs.

Solid choice and lesson. Much appreciation. Great performance too!

Wonderful sound. Just wondering: Your PDF says capo 3rd fret in the video you have the capo on the 4th, any preference?

Thanks Tion. Yes, the live version is capo 3, and that's what my tab is based on. I think the studio recording has capo 4. Personally I like capo 4 if I'm singing as it suits my voice a bit better, but it really doesn't make too much difference.

Working on my Xmas video this week...it's not going to be Fahey, but hope you enjoy it. But will certainly try and look at some more Fahey nest year.

Haha, learn this one first, and you should still have a bit of time for the Xmas tunes.

Yes, such a great atmosphere on that record. Definitive performances of most of his greatest songs. I even like his terrible jokes.
