Hello all. It's Christmas Special time. And this year I decided to try putting together a solo guitar version of one of my favourite Xmas songs, from one of my favourite Christmas records: the Low Christmas album. If you don't know this album, do check it out, it's wonderful -

Here's the link to my video  -

In the video I take you through my arrangement in detail and also talk more generally about how to go about arranging songs for solo guitar. The tab is attached below.

And that's about it for this year. I'm away next week, so no video, but I'll be back on the 1st of January. Song requests, or ideas for video topics are very welcome right now as I'm currently planning my first few videos of 2023.

Thanks so much to everyone on here for the support over the past year. Happy Holidays, and if you're celebrating Christmas I hope you have a merry one.

Cheers,

Adrian

Thank you for this lesson. It helped me learn more about this band, and also another Christmas record I have enjoyed for years: Tracey Thorn's "Tinsel and Light," which also includes a Low cover (and Sufjan Stevens, Joni Mitchell, and many others). Perhaps you can find a song on this album to do a lesson on? Happy Holidays!

Thanks Kyle. I must check out the Tracy Thorn album. I love a good Xmas record but that's not one I'm familiar with. Happy Holidays to you too!

Silversun Pickups just posted a cover of this on YouTube this afternoon. Must be a sign it’s time for a Silversun Pickups song in a lesson! 😉

anyonecanplayguitar

I'll have to check that out! Like Silvers Pickups, so will definitely consider a lesson.

More shoegaze and dream pop in 2023 please

Neal Pike

Also some "rock"would be fun

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I would like to do some proper rock stuff. Did a Sabbath video a while back which was fun.

Brian Scott

Cheers Adrian, Thanks for another year of great videos. Wishing you and your family all the best in 2023!

Absolutely lovely. So so sorry to hear of Mimi's passing. They are an astounding band whose music should be explored by anyone interested in the mystery of rock music. Indispensable stuff. Happy Christmas Adrian. Looking forward to another year of awesome song choices...

Very nice. Thank you: “When the student is ready the teacher will appear….” ― Tao Te Ching

I think the Carter family ladies would be a source for a good video. I like Cannonball Blues but I'm sure you could find something equally interesting. As a suggestion for a video series, you could do an April Fools special, where you do a completely non-Adrian tune, to accompany your Halloween and Christmas specials.

Jeff Sims

I am totally going to re-use that quote.

This is fantastic. I was unfamiliar w this song so thanks for the Christmas present! There’s a great 2010 live video you likely saw w a Fender 12 string lovely chimey sound, tho some of the chord shapes look strange, at least to my untutored eye.

Matthew Keighery

Don't know this song or band but I like that so much of what you are showing/playing is familiar from previous lessons. So much of what I am playing are basic songs and I find it challenging to make them interesting. For example Lucinda Williams Are you Alright, I love the song though it's difficult to make it interesting while playing it. It would be good to explore ways to make the simple more interesting. I can utilise triad shapes (OK) or thirds (OK) or arpeggios (needs work) and chord voicings (more work required) but given the song there has to be 10 embellishments for this or any song that can help and teach. This is a version of a Dylan classic with lots of embellishments around a three chord progression which I think could be developed into a lesson. Thanks for all the lessons Adrian and Happy Chrissie

Anything Wipers would be incredible! Anything from their first 3 albums would be killer, but the album "Youth of America" is absolutely insanely good start to finish.

Interesting comment Matthew. I really like the idea of perhaps taking a simple song or chord progression and looking at various ways it could be embellished. Will give this some thought. Great Dylan outtake too - don't think I've heard that before.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, great suggestion. I know the Youth of America album quite well - really excellent. I will revisit it over Xmas and think about making a video on one of the tracks.

Cheers Brian! Thanks for the support on here over this past year. All the best to you and yours for 2023 too.

Thank-you! Like 'the mystery of rock music'! Low's albums are definitely deep and mysterious things that I will always keep coming back to. Happy Christmas to you!

anyonecanplayguitar

haha excellent ideas. I think you mentioned the Carter family once before and it's definitely up for consideration. Love the idea of an April fools special! Will have to think of something funny I could do which doesn't offend too many people!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, saw that! A Lou Reed style Fender 12 string. Think it's in an open tuning of some kind.

Jeff Runnels

Another great selection! Love your taste in music. You have introduced/re-introduced me to so many great bands/songs. Happy Holidays!

Jeff Runnels

How about taking on some new music for one of your upcoming lessons? I'd love to see you do a song from fellow Londoners, Dry Cleaning. Their guitarist, Tom Dowse, is doing really interesting things with his SG. Maybe the song "Magic of Meghan?" Cheers!

random parade

Great choice this year! Very sad about Mimi, but your version is a beautiful tribute. Would love to see you do a song from Love and Rockets. Daniel Ash's guitarwork on those songs is quite good. Merry Christmas!

Jessica poole

How about Tarantula by Jody Reynolds as a request. Such a great and cool sounding guitar part. Merry Christmas and thanks for the fantastic lessons!!

John

Happy Christmas and thanks for another year of excellent videos. I for one certainly still get excited when I see that new video notification on my phone! As for the future, how about a funky disco classic for your followers? I've always thought that the playing on " I'm Thinking of You" by Sister Sledge is absolutely exemplary. When that guitar kicks in at the beginning, it's pure magic. I've got somewhere close but I think some of the clicky nuances have escaped me. Cheers, geezer.

poplar

teenage fanclub - "christmas eve" would be another classic (simple and perfect)

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I've very nearly done that in previous years! Maybe next year it'll happen.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks very much John! Yes, I'd love to do a bit of disco next year. I might be wrong, but I think I looked at the Thinking of You riff in the Nile Rodgers riffs video I did a while back. Maybe I should do a full song lesson. Merry Christmas to you!

John

Looking back, you did Adrian- riff 2! How about more recent discoish throwback stuff like Lizzo's Juice or About Damn Time. Some nice funky stuff in those.
