Happy New Year all! As is customary, my first video of the new year is all about practice. In the video I give you some general thoughts on practice, and I also talk about the kind of things that I'm planning to work on myself this year. Here's a link to the video:

Hope you find it interesting, and I hope that there are one or two ideas in there that will be helpful.

The next video will be out on Friday. Speak then!

Happy New Year Adrian, just getting around to this excellent advice. I take your point about the picking technique, you can't do anything other than strum particularly on electric if you haven't sorted this. Re improvising, always wanted to, never did, my efforts sounded totally generic. This years goal, I'm going to learn the melody for songs I'm working on, which'll help me with notes and the keyboard as well, and use that as a starting point. Starting with your lessons on Kid and, more recently, Candy Says. Great to hear you jumping into Renbourn. A question: do you think he or Bert plays the guitar solo at 2:28 or so of Trees they do grow high (pentangle), one of those perfect solos. One post punk request for this year : He's Frank, somehow I just stumbled onto this recently, what a brilliant song. Re Django, Les Yeux Noirs. Lastly, have you ever considered dipping your toes into African music, e.g. palm wine, lovely melodic, for example this will make you smile https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjwqceeVxrI Be well!

Michael

Happy New Year, Adrian! Will we see the post punk course in 2023?

Scott Rees

Thank you Adrian for the refreshed perspective and the 2023 practice plan ideas. I've been sidetracked with bands for the last year or so but I've always kept your channel because it's the best on all counts, especially your welcoming approach. Lots to revisit. Best wishes 2023! Scott

short term I'm gonna try to learn the JIgsaw Puzzle Blues

Adrian, thanks for your commitment to sharing your knowledge and reminding us to work towards developing our own style/sound. It has made a big difference to my playing. I am also looking forward to the Post Punk Course whenever you release it. I hope you and your family Take Care and Stay Safe in 2023. Cheers Pete

Thanks for this one Adrian, and for all of your great content, which has had a huge positive impact on me and the pleasure I get from my playing.

Thanks for this, and thank you in general! If you're looking for resources on John Reborn, I highly recommend his book 'Fingerstyle Guitar' - it has a wide range of his pieces, and is very well put together. I played at least one tune from it each year for my exams at university... pretty much took a year each time for me to whip them into shape, but it was tremendously rewarding. All the best for 2023!

Happy New Year to you Michael! Yes, indeed. It's been a long time in the making but it's just about finished now. More news soon.

Thanks for the kind words Scott! Nice to hear you've been busy playing with bands, sounds great.

Thanks Peter! The PP course is almost ready, more news on that soon I hope.

Michael

Glad to hear it!

One of my biggest complaints about learning the guitar is that there is so much wonderful stuff to learn that it is overwhelming. I might think I have a good plan and making progress and then I hear something I love, and bam I want to dive into that. It's a constant barrage of distraction. There must be some kind of interphase cable to plug my brain into a computer and download everything I need to know. Maybe Amazon has one for sale.

Hello Adrian, I just wanted to cast my vote for more Cramps, Link Wray and Rockabilly in general. Is there any possibility of a Cramps/Primitive and Howlin' Wolf/Smokestack Lightnin' comparison? Thank you for all the wonderful content!!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, will try and keep more coming this year. Like the Primitive/Smokestack Lightnin idea - will give that some thought, thanks!

Ditko Kirby, Private Dick

Thank you! I truly wish that a Cramps Gravest Hits tab book existed. Very much looking forward to to future lessons as well as diving into the fantastic content here!

anyonecanplayguitar

Maybe I should write it myself?! Will definitely try and do another Cramps track later this year.

If you do write the book or collect future Cramps lessons, know that you have a copy already pre-sold! Looking forward to future lessons, Cramps or otherwise!
