This week, some soul/r&b style guitar, and an easy way to create nice fills and solo ideas.

The basic concept is to create double stops using the major or minor pentatonic scales. You can just play the scale that fits the key and use your ear to find what works, or if you want to get more sophisticated you could try thinking about each chord in the progression and try to tailor your note choice to fit each chord as it goes by.

Tab can be found below. I've tabbed out my little intro piece, and also written out a few of the scales and exercises that I discuss.

Hope you enjoy it.

Speak next week,

Adrian

Wonderful sounds mate! I don't know how you make it look so easy everytime. The touch and timing techniques are off the scale. Way above my pay station!

Michael Rae

Great lesson! 👏👏👏👏👏

Glenn Boreham

Excellent tutorial, Adrian - very catchy stylish vibes being played here! You of course go beyond this and offer additional exercises to encourage the player to explore further - bravo!

Niall

Love it! reminds me of you're great lesson on 'Rainy Night In Georgia'. Would still be really interested in a improv or, chord melody, supplement lesson for that one, Tried spelling out the melody but sounds too "thin" as single notes.

NB

Love it!!! More like this welcomed.

This is EXACTLY what I needed. Did your Steve Cropper 6ths lesson and was keen to learn more soul styles. Excellent stuff Adrian!

Yes, was definitely thinking Cornell Dupree when I was putting this together. l like the idea of a Rainy Night chord melody - might well try putting something together.

Brian West

Great lesson Adrian thanks. I think I might have just found my ideal music style and your backing track is a great tempo and that gives me time to think about where I want to go and still being conscious of the chords in the back ground. More of this style would be good for me. Thanks again.

Neil Malone

Wow! Thanks for this master class on using double stops in r&b soloing.

Jeff Runnels

Love the Daniel Johnson sweatshirt! You must have friends in Austin?

Gregor

Great lesson, Adrian. It took me some time to play your solo, but now I am content with my playing. Once more, I realized that I have to enlarge my repertoire not to play always the same when improvising. Double stops are a good idea. Thank you!

Jurgos

Took me till today, to get into that lesson and suddenly things fell into place. Thank you very much for another very well structured lesson.

Bill Atterberry

Thank you for demystifying this sound! Now "Anyone can be a Soul Man!" :-))
