Blues this week, and a much-requested lesson on the standard Stormy Monday. This is an essential blues tune, and one that can be approached in a lot of different ways. In this video I go through some of the options, by taking a look at the evolution of the song through 3 classic recordings.

I've tabbed out all the examples in the video. There are rhythm guitar examples in the style of T-Bone Walker, Bobby Bland and the Allman Brothers, and I've also written out what I play at the start of the video.

My backing track will be in the next post.

There will be no video next week: it's half-term in the UK and I'm taking a bit of a break. Normal service resumes on 9th June.

Hope you enjoy this one, speak in a couple of week's time!

Whoooo Buddy)))) working on this and bass line two. Good project for a retired man-of-leisure such as myself. Thankee Adrian. Your a good teacher and player.

How about some scrunchy faces on those bends Adrian? Emoting

250alphonse

Just kidding but could be a good lesson on getting the feel and emoting a la B.B and T-Bone.

Any way to access the tabs without guitar pro app?

Robert Bachmeier

Fantastic chording ideas. Every time I dig into stuff like this I fully regret all my years of parties and sports when I could have been learning music. At this stage I'm simply mesmerized by the sophistication of the chords used. This helps a lot with my one of my main goals this year of ingraining more sophisticated chord progressions into my old noggin. Thanks again Adrian.

Outstanding, as always. Must be a lot of work behind all this. Thanks a lot

Thanks Robert! Years of parties and sports sounds fun to me, but I know that feeling of being slightly overwhelmed by all the musical knowledge out there you still want to learn about!

Yes, Guitar Pro is optional - the PDF is identical anyway, but it can be a useful practice tool if you want to play back or edit the tab in any way.

haha I always get a little self-conscious about pulling weird faces on camera so I've learned to minimise that slightly. Occasionally a proper bend face still gets through though!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, that sounds good will definitely consider something along those lines.

David Emslie

Thanks so much for the reply. Love your excellent playing and teaching!

I havre loved this tune since hearing the Allman Brothers version in the early 70's on their album," Live at the Fill more East." Blues is so much about the tone and the feel, and Duane Allman's was superb on that recording, as is Adrian's here. I can't wait to roll up my sleeves and study this lesson!

Colin Sibthorpe

Adrian, thanks for this tutorial. its great to have 3 classic versions to work through, & for the GP file & backing track!

Adrian, This comment is a bit late, but if someone wanted to turn any of the four version into a full 3-5 song of 12 bar blues how would they accomplish that? I have your version down best I can so far. It would be great to put the verses to it. Bob
