Hello all,

A fun surf classic for you this week. Nothing too hard here; overall this one is quite beginner friendly. If you want more of a challenge you could try adding a few embellishments or combine the rhythm and leads parts a bit like I do in my demo.

It's all tabbed out below. My tab is based on the original Pyramids recording, (though I've switched it to the key of F#min) but in the last section I've included the variations I throw in in the video.

Hope you have fun with it! Backing is in the next post.

- Adrian

Surf Classic! Penetration by The Pyramids

This one's great fun to play. It's fairly beginner friendly, and if you're a more advanced player you can always try throwing in some embellishments. Thanks for this - Penetration is a surf tune I never sat down and learned, but no excuse now!!!

My gateway to Pipeline! Much appreciated

If the original was played in G, then they must have tuned the guitars up a half step because the Pyramids played Stratocasters and there was no 22nd fret on a Strat until 1985, and I don't know if a producer could shift the pitch up a half step in post-production in 1964.

Hi Donnie! Yes, someone mentioned this in the YouTube comments - no 22 fret strats yet! Varispeed on the tape machine was definitely possible then, so I think it’s likely they just sped up the recording for a bit more excitement!

Adrian - have you looked at a modern day surf band the surfrajettes?

Donnie Buckley

That’s certainly a possibility. I tried playing it for a long time in G with standard tuning. It’s quite the hassle. And I had to have that 22nd fret which was tough to get on a Jazzmaster! Finally discovering how much easier it was in F# made all the difference- love the simplicity of the rhythm - hitting on all beats!

Ey up youtube Icon (just back from your hols in France) I learn the Taff Led Zep Bron yr Aur stomp last week - (am getting much better at fingerpick after a lot of practice). If you ever have the time or inclination would you be able to do a lesson on Rory Gallagher - Brute force and ignorance - as an when you feel you wish you want to - Regards Russell

Great stuff Adrian… thanks and have a wonderful weekend 🤠

Thanks for another great lesson Adrian. I'm saving hard for a surfybear reverb!

Question - what program opens the ",gp" file extension backing track? Thanks

Les Brown

Have always loved The Ventures version of this song on “The Ventures in Space” album…. My older brother bought the album new in 1964…I was 10. I really appreciate this lesson and am happy to report I just ordered a SurfyBear metal like yours… very much look forward to using your lesson and backing track to good effect, along with other surf style music… thanks again….
