Hello all!

This week I'm taking a look at Serge Gainsbourg's 1971 masterpiece Histoire de Melody Nelson, with a specific focus on the amazing guitar parts played by British session ace Alan Parker. There's a bit of information on the background and history of the album, and then I take you on a tour of some of my favourite guitar (and bass) moments.

All the riffs I discuss in the video are tabbed out below (there's a separate tab accounting the Melody bass part).

Hope you enjoy the video. And if you'd like to see my give this kind of treatment to another class album, do let me know!

Are you using the Archer pedal on this? Just received mine but haven't tried it yet on the Les.

Definite hints of brown paper in those bass bends 👌

For a long time, John Squires playing on second coming was the pinnacle of blues rock guitar for me and is still right up there. 🙏🏼

I must thank you for this. This is, indeed, a masterpiece. Merci Adrian.

Merci Adrian for covering this great concept album. Love the huge bass sound on the tracks... I've been told that Jane was pregnant when the photo on the sleeve was taken. Anyway, you did a great choice. Merci encore et à bientôt !

Excellent selection, Adrian. RIP Jane Birkin.

Thanks so very much for this. This is not just uncanny that you have dedicated a lesson on this, for me, as an admirer of Gainsbourg, I might go and play him this song, he is in the cemetery near my apartment. Playing music is like channeling the spirit of greatness.

Andy Hawker

Agreed, I also joined thanks to this wonderful post. Thanks, so much!

What a great idea - I think you’ve extended the form of the YouTube guitar lesson - it’s a really interesting way of looking at an album 🙂

Hi Adrian, thank you for introducing me to Serge Gainsbourg. Loved your idea and lesson format. Really interesting, and gained a lot of ideas to add to my playing 🙂

This is awesome - thank-you Adrian. Would love one of these for Neil Young's Dead Man soundtrack :)
