Hello all! This week I'm looking at a classic Donovan track, which contains one of my favourite fuzz guitar solos. This has long been rumoured to have been played by Jimmy Page (JP himself even once claimed he played it on his website), but now I think it's fairly widely accepted that lead guitar on this song was played by British session man Alan Parker (who was also responsible for the guitar on Melody Nelson, which I discussed a few weeks ago).

In the video I briefly discuss the acoustic guitar parts, but my main focus is on the solo.

It's all tabbed out below. I've included all the lead guitar parts, some of which I didn't have time to get into in the video. The backing track is in the next post.

Hope you enjoy the lesson!

- Adrian

When this song first came out I loved it, but I couldn’t really define why. I just played the 45 over and over…… and over. Then got the album. Adrian, Now that I think of it, Sunshine Superman, Season of the Witch, Mellow Yellow, and a bunch of other songs had that something. I don’t know. Maybe they sounded simple, or plain, or folky at first, but his songs were addictive. Thanks for covering this cool song! Bernie

I was 16 yrs when this came out. Bravo Adrian to feature Donovan to a new generation of boppers. With lyrics like elec-tri-cal banana or Mellow yellow we knew we were in for a wild ride. I had no idea what a hurdy-gurdy was at the time. We loved fuzz!

A rather dark horse pick! Have you by chance ever heard the Butthole Surfer's version?

I loved the scrambling to the pedal to stop the chaos at the end of the play through ;) FPGW (fuzz pedal gone wild)

Always one of my favories Adrian. What equipment did you use. Love that Fuzz. Would love you to do "Send Me a Postcard Dalin'" by Shocking Blue and Slip Inside this House" by 13th Floor Elevator. Great early fuzzy psychedelic pop rock.

I'd like to know a bit more about that fuzz pedal, there's so little out there on it and it sounds incredible. I see it listed on Reverb, but before I click "buy", out of curiosity what was it that drew you to it? And what other fuzzes did you try for this track before settling on it? I've got a Fuzzrite clone and a Fuzz Factory, but the NSA sounds sort of in between the two (and honestly I can't tame the FF at all, it's just too wild).

Harrison came up with the title for the song.
