I thought I'd do a country guitar lesson this week. And I'm soloing over the chord progression from the great Gram Parson's track Return of the Grievous Angel. I've written a little solo of my own which you can learn, but I'm also talking more generally about my general approach to country soloing and improvising.

Hope you enjoy the video. My solo is tabbed out below, and the backing will be in the next post.

Speak next week,

Adrian

Love the country Adrian (and the tele), it was the reason I subscribed so maybe that evens things out with the angry dude.

John Rodgers

I love your country lessons Adrian! It’s one of the reasons I subscribe, and your channel is my go-to for guitar lessons. I’m Canadian, and feel that country music transcends all borders and cultures! Keep it coming.

Adrian do you have a b-bender in your stable? I bet folks would be interested in seeing that in action.

Peter Healy

I don't understand why someone would react that way Adrian. The fact that you play all of the Guitar Genres is one of the reasons I am a Patron. I discovered Gram Parsons (along with many others) about 25 years ago during a time I was moving away from my preconceived prejudice's and started expanding my Musical tastes. A lesson like this helps me clarify that playing the changes approach. Keep on doing what you do. Pete

Kimberly A DeMichele

Love ALL your work, Adrian! You are helping me be as eclectic as possible. Keep up the great work!

I grew up loving loving the rebellious spectrum of music american and english punk, crass included. Needless to say I hated country at the time, but I've come around. Now I say yes to Buck Owens and hee haw to Flying Burrito Brothers, this is not mainstream stuff either. I love lessons like these.

C#ris

You are on a roll with fantastic choices, Adrian.I'm sure there are plenty of Americans the anonymous Youtube commenter thinks shouldn't be playing country either : ) Have you considered a pedal steel style country bending lesson with volume pedal/control?

Fin

Seems like most of the mainstream country I hear on the radio now has to put in a plug for a pick-up truck: Saw you at the bar You were looking kinda nifty. Wanna take a ride in my F-150? or: Hey, I saw you drivin round in that Dodge Ram Charger it's like my daddy said, it makes you look a little larger... I bet you have pick-up trucks in the UK. You can play country if you like.

anyonecanplayguitar

No, I love the sound and have toyed with the idea of getting one. Maybe one day!

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Pete. Doing what I do there's always going to be the occasional negative or weird comment, but I find it funny more than anything. Definitely not going to stop me just doing what I do.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, when I was younger I probably had a bit ore of that punk attitude where I looked down on mainstream stuff and hated certain artists or styles. But these days I think its healthier to just listen to what I like no matter what the style and without worrying about how cool or otherwise it might be.

anyonecanplayguitar

Cheers Chris. Like the idea of a bending lesson with volume pedal, will think about doing something like that!

anyonecanplayguitar

Haha you should move to Nashville and become a songwriter for hire, people would sing this stuff!

Gerry Devine

Ha! Has the commenter who doesn't think Brits can play country ever heard of Albert Lee or Ray Flacke? He must have a more discerning ear than Emmylou Harris and Ricky Skaggs.

Allan Dahlquist

As a Brit and as a musician, claim your country!

Dave

What gauge strings do you use on your Tele, Adrian? Loved this lesson!

Clay Wiedemann

County + Brits + Punk = Mekons, and maybe a band worth a lesson one day.

Greg Sherman

Wonder if "that guy" would've had an issue with the Yardbirds and the Stones, et al. "How dare you Brits play the blues!"

anyonecanplayguitar

I actually just had my Tele set up for 9s (Ernie Ball Super Slinky) after years of using 10s. I think I prefer the feel and sound for country. And it certainly makes some of those precision bends a bit easier. But I'm sticking with 10s on my other guitars.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, probably! Maybe he wasn't being altogether serious with his comment. But I've always believed no styles of music should be off limits for anyone as long as it's done with love and respect.

Lofty

Great lesson

El Scotto

Fantastic lesson as always Adrian, absolutely love it. And good on you for disregarding that pompous git, sounds like the sort of pork chop that belongs in the Marylebone Cricket Club. Keep up the great work.

Ignatz Maus

Adrian, bless you sir for this lesson. You are an amazing teacher. This fool has benefited from your clear but deep approach to building strengths while covertly developing an appreciation of theory. I would love a lesson on "Older Guys" by the FBB... I know there's slide pedal in there but having an 6-string arrangement would be awesome.

Jack Axcelson

Hey, everyone, I'm new here and I'm a big Gram Parsons fan, so this is perfect. But I can't seem to find the backing track (which Adrian refers to in the video). Can someone point the way for me?

Jerry Goldberg

Dude, I grew up in Bakersfield, and you've got the Bakersfield sound and soul totally. A pleasure to listen and learn

Jason Menard

If anything you should be playing MORE country music! Keep going man!

Zac Haluza

You're in luck — in the collaboration video Andy posted to his channel, he mentioned that Adrian is going to produce a country guitar course for his site (the Andy Guitar site, specifically). Somewhat selfishly, I'm also hoping that the course will be available as a standalone purchase like Adrian's existing soloing courses.

Allen Merrell

One of my all time favorite country pickers is a Brit, The Great Albert Lee.

Sandra Cloutier

Nice!! And not too crazy fast! Thank you! Plus a mention of my fave...Emmy Lou Harris! She s AWESOME!

Jerome Oks

Adrian, Can your backing tracks be downloaded?

David Ball

What about Albert Lee? Great British guitarist

David Ball

Unfortunately I can’t find the three dots on my iPhone? Great stuff though 👍👍

Yes I love that GP tune! I also love the lesson and the Tele. I don’t care if it’s DimeBag or James Burton or anything in between. It’s all fun!
