Hello all! This week I'm looking at the unique guitar stylings of Ricky Wilson from The B52s, who was an incredible player with a highly unusual approach to the instrument. The song I've chosen to look at is one of The B52s best loved songs. Wilson was of course a total one-off and I can't reproduce exactly what he's doing in some parts of the song, but I hope you enjoy exploring his style with me in this video.

Find my tab below. I've includes all the main riffs, and written out a few of the variations I'm hearing during the outro. Backing track is coming up in the next post.

Speak next week,

Adrian

I smiled through your whole performance, fantastic! Deceptively simple and so distinctive to the B-52's Ricky Wilson era.

Mike

Thanks so much for this! I’ve been waiting for a good tutorial on this song to help me fill in some gaps.

Impeccable taste as always. Another very unique and satisfying lesson! Much appreciation to you, Adrian!

Yes to all of the above comments ++++

Thanks very much Adrian - such an eye-opener. I would never have imagined how this song was arranged - really fascinating!! I’m thinking to have a go with my fender mustang as it is due for a change of strings. Cheers

Ken Thompson

Great tutorial. What gauge strings did you use?

Gary Ainsworth

I actually got excited when I got the notification when attending a 21st Birthday party and couldn’t wait to get home and have listen!! Thanks Adrian, another one you picked I was always curious about.

Adrian, I have long loved your videos/tutorials. I was so pleased to see this one, as I have been known to sing the praises of Ricky Wilson, whom I feel is a terribly underrated guitar player. Very sad that he passed away at such a young age. Imagine how he might have developed. What a unique talent. 52 Girls is quite incredible. Anytime I menyion this to people, they think it’s so easy to play, yet they cannot even come close to how it actually sounds. Thanks for taking the time time to show Ricky some love and respect.

My brain was going through the same type of strategizing, it looks like the jazzmaster for me for the same reason 🤠

Mike in Texas

I had heard in passing that he only used 4 strings...but I didn't realize what a difference it made...so I looked up the info on Private Idaho (my personal favorite to play) and he used 5 strings on that one, and a different tuning.

This tutorial sent me off on a spin around the internet with Rock Lobster as my magnetic north. I ended up in a land where I heard a simulation of System Of A Down covering Rock Lobster … https://youtu.be/-0XLruQ3KMc

Yay!!!!! I've been hoping for this one!

Chris Grimes

Athens, Ga in the house! Great lesson as always

Yes, it's a little bit of a commitment to attempt this one, but if you're already due for a string change then definitely worth giving it a try!

anyonecanplayguitar

I can't exactly remember, I just grabbed some odd strings that I had in my box of spares. I think the top strings were 17 or 18. The low C a 52 which was the heaviest I had.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, totally agree. Underrated and misunderstood. I've always loved his playing but making this video has given me a renewed appreciation of his genius.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, that's another amazing track, I almost did that one but went for the better known Rock Lobster. But maybe if I do another B52s lesson I'll look at that one.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Greg! Yes, this one was much harder to get together than I anticipated. Given me a renewed appreciation of Ricky Wilson's genius.

Is that GP file for Guitar pro? I'm not able to open it.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes a Guitar Pro file. You'll need the latest version for it to open. Content is the same as the PDF though.
