Rather than do yet another tutorial on a classic surf tune (I'm sure I will be doing that again in the future though), I thought it might be fun to try and write my own surf-inspired track. In this video I take you through my writing process and talk about things like inspiration, composition, arrangement and the creativity in general.

Hope you find it interesting. Tab for my piece can be found below, and the backing track will be in the next post.

Speak next week,

Adrian

Can I write a classic surf-rock instrumental?

In this video I'm attempting to write a classic sounding surf instrumental. Along the way I'm talking about things like composition, arrangement and the creative process in general. Fantastic Adrian!

Scott Marx

That was great. So insightful to see your thought process.

Richard Kendrick

Great song! Sounds like a track from a Quentin Tarantino movie.

Doug Ogden

Friggin' awesome! Outstanding tune, wonderful description of your creative process, and brilliant performance. Great job all around Adrian.

Will Lodge

Chistmas number 1, you heard it hear first!

Simon Hewitt

Cool song. Name suggestion - an anagram of Adrian and Surf: Fundraiser. And it could be!

Donnie Buckley

Love it. It has a somewhat Bambi Molesters feel to it.

Peter Healy

Another great vid Adrian. I really like the creative process journey in this. For me it's a timely exploration of the Surf genre, as I just modded an "Apache" based patch in my Boss GX-100 to play around with this style. I added a Blues Driver effect in the signal chain to muddy the waters, sorry, couldn't help myself. I called the Patch "Very Pacific" given my location here in Oz. You are welcome to use it for your piece. Cheers Pete

NB

Thanks Adrian ... as others have noted - really useful to see your process. Loved the song also!!!

Paul Blagbrough

How about “Malibu” for a song title?

Kevin Bostridge

Fantastic Adrian. You are very talented. "Waverider"

moosie

Winter Ride, or perhaps Video Vibe. Your song, and creative process are miles better than those suggestions, but it's all I got... Great job! It's a modern classic, for sure.

Wayne Rayfield

Awesome Adrian! "Dance with the jellyfish"

Stephen Braddy

Adrian, anything in the future about composing any genre would be very welcome, thanks!

mrlion

This is marvellous, sounds like it belongs on James Wilsey’s album. You should do an album in this style.

John O'Grady

Like wow Adrian! That was a fantastic run through on process and what a great result. My suggestion: "Like Wow"

william szabo

Just wow, from process to output!

Gordon Oliver

my vote: ‘Riders of the Rip Tide’

Allan Dahlquist

Great lesson! How about "Neap Tide" for a title?

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Stephen. Yes, I wasn't sure people would be into this kind of video but it seems to have gone down well, so I'll try and do more long similar lines.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thank-you. Yes, James Wisley is a name I hear mentioned quite a lot. For some reason I've never checked out his solo album, I must do so!

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Richard, I'd definitely be able to retire if I could get one of my tunes placed in a Quentin Tarantino film!

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Donnie. Has some Bambi Molesters on my playlist, so definitely a bit of an influence in there.

John Chaplin

Very helpful to hear your creative process. Thank you! Splash Down.

moosie

Undertow

Tim Dedman

More surf! Mentioned this in the YT comments, but I also loved the surf/trash rock song you cooked up for the Valco FiveO pedal demo. Great work on both.

Iain G

Fantastic Adrian! As good as any of the classics!

trigpoint

I like it. I'm getting a dark teen tragedy vibe from this, I think the title should be "Beyond the tides."

hugh hales-tooke

Like the tune a lot. Extremely helpful discussion about songwriting. I would be very interested in a similar lesson on R&B or Country composition.

Andy Santandreu

Sublime, Adrian. I'd love to see you doing more of these in different styles, your exquisite takes on Indie, Post Punk, Dreampop, Shoegaze etc. Thank you for everything you do

Angus Kingston

This was excellent. Thank you. Have you ever heard Wedding Cake Island by Midnight Oil? Check it out.

Doug Ogden

Put this one on your next LP! It's awesome!
