Hi everyone,

Loads of you have requested I look at some Killing Joke, and I'm happy to oblige with this lesson on their classic track Eighties.

In the first section of the video I run through how to play the song. And the second part of the video is an exploration of the Geordie sound, which I attempt to replicate using the gear I have to hand in my studio.

Tab can be found below. The backing is in the next post.

Hope you enjoy; speak next week!

Oh yes! You never fail to deliver Adrian. I'll be hoping you could come back to cover Love Like Blood one day.

Michael Carr

Geordie just passed in December. They are one of the all time great bands from the era.

So great! Thanks for this (once again) excellent choice! A hundred people learning and venerating this riff over the weekend would be the most respectful Geordie tribute I can imagine. KJ have soundtracked much of my life and shaped my thinking about art and culture. I would second Love Like Blood, and would welcome anything from the first LP.

Michael

Great pick Adrian! I'd +1 Love Like Blood. Geordie will be missed. Such an original. I always found the thing with Nirvana's "Come As You Are" funny, because both it and "Eighties" are quite similar to Captain Sensible's riff in "Life Goes On" off the Damned's 1982 album "Strawberries," which is before "Eighties." An interesting video might be to analyze all three of these songs — "Life Goes On," "Eighties," and "Come As You Are" — and talk about their similarities.

I was going to join because of your John McGeoch tutorials but this one has made me sign up for Patreon. Well done great work

Mr Mont

Thank you so much! I just discovered this song a few weeks ago and I've been working on it. Perfect timing - thank you Adrian!

Paul Mason

Yay for the Virage! First person apart from Prince and the guy from Kikagaku Moyo (and maybe Fripp has one to practice on) I've seen to use a guitar from this short-lived series (I have an SDC-55 and an HDC-99 myself). The sound is bang on to my ears.

Blaine Whelan

The stereo thing's fun isn't it? I had a jam recently with a 5e3 and a Princeton in stereo. Try feeding a stereo reverb into the 2 amps, it sounds amazing

Duncan Worrall

Dope guitar. I go gooey each time I see it. Cant find a black one like that anywhere

Adrian, You must hear Brighter Than A Thousand Suns! It so different from the rest of the catalog. But I love the first album. And Revelations too. If you could could do a lesson on the song Requiem, I know that hundreds of guitar players, mostly dressed in black, would be indebted to you. Best, KnH

Christopher Houlihan

You absolutely nailed the tone on this iconic track - well done.

SeanK

Yes!! Brighter Than A Thousand Suns is so underrated!! A must Listen!!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes so true - if anything the Damned riff is close to Come As You Are! Could definitely be a video to be made on the similarities.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I'm enjoying the Virage again lately since I got it set up and a problem with the switching fixed. I've had it ages - was a really lucky eBay find!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I didn't get round to trying the CE2 in stereo but I must do it. I've used it on synths before and it sounds amazing in stereo.

anyonecanplayguitar

I don't know the Thousand Suns record but I'll be sure to check it out this week! And I'll add Requiem to me list of possibles too, thanks!

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Jas. I almost went of Love Like Blood last week, but I'll try and make it happen in a future video.

kevin hellon

Requiem is tricky, I’ve never quite figured it out. Thank you for considering it, Adrian.

Amazing work Adrian. Would love to see you do Love Like Blood or Fire Dances. I think Manuela Rickers of Xmal used the same amp as Geordie, definately the same manufacturer. Do you use Guitar Pro to make your backing tracks? How do you get them sounding so polished, my drums always sound like buckets.

Tosha Lazarus-Clifford

Ur right sounds like cobain’s riff - i started listening to punk in mid 80’s and missed seeing killing joke! But saw nirvana in 1988 before top 40. Ur such an incredible studio musician of all this awesome music forgotten or unknown by most people and am so grateful for your tutorials to watch. Even I don’t play all of them I like to see it out of curiosity

John Kowall
