Both Scar and Winrys parents are victims of the circle of hate. It is really tragic as you very much get the feeling that Scar wanted everyone to flee. Rather do what they can to avoid conflict instead of escalating and seeking vengeance like some of his fellow Ishvalens was already driven to want. It is so sad that you can understand a persons motivations, but recognizing that all they ultimately do is create more pain for themselves and others. Scar is deff one of the deeper characters in FMA with complicated emotions and motivations that runs counter to what Ed and Al feel and want.
