So, I'm about to compare two very different characters in Luffy and Maomao. They both have this one characteristic that I've always found interesting in that they'll mainly help out people with agency. Luffy didn't help Koby until Koby stood up to Alvida, and this is a situation that pops up often for him and he almost always deals with it in the same way (Ace was a different story because of their shared history and the fact that he knew Ace would never ask for help). Here, we see Maomao admitting to herself that she would prefer to help those who struggle and try to help themselves. Both Maomao and Luffy are very different, but they both help people in their own ways, especially when those people are willing to help themselves. And yeah, that father is a piece of shit!

I feel it is also about having options or opportunity. The older sister knew where her life may end up no matter how hard she might fight it. It wasn't until someone like Maomao gave her a chance by simply offering an introduction, clean clothes to be presentable, and a place to wash up. Of course, one has to recognize the opportunity when it appears and have the will to take it. Sadly, millions (if not billions) face those same hard decisions even today. A line I always recall when thinking about how fortunate I am... "There but for the grace of god, go I."
