How do you feel about artwork (illustrations) in interactive fiction games?

I don't mind, if it's locations or items, but dislike characters, especially LIs or the MC being portrait. For me, it becomes less interactive and more a predefined story, predefined MC. I actually cover images of the MC/LIs, if they are included and I'm reading.

I like to imagine my own interpretation of locations and characters when normally reading, but if the art is really good it can enhance the experience! Sometimes I have trouble imagining some locations as well, so environmental art can also really help.
