I know it sounds crazy, but I’m constantly looking for ways to push the boundaries of what people come to expect from a choicegame. This idea could be great (or could suck) and that’s why I’m asking for your input!

How would you feel about optional, DLC/In-App Purchase content adding MC dialogue lines to choices? The voice clip would play after a dialogue choice is made. Essentially, it would read the top line of the page (where I repeat MC’s dialogue choice). Of course, there would be a male and female version.

One benefit is that it would help readers “hear” how the MC sounds, and voices can add a lot of emotion, too. It would probably make the game feel more like an anime or a visual novel. An audiobook is also a good comparison. If professionally done, it wouldn’t be as cringey as you’d think.

But it would be distracting for a lot of readers, I think, who are so deeply immersed in the text that audio wouldn’t add anything but noise. Some have a clear idea of what their MC sounds like and wouldn’t want that to change.

In any case, let me know what you think!

Side subject, I will actually have like a playlist that follows along with the themes of the story as I read. Really helps set the mood.

For me personally - absolutely not. I already have an issue with descriptions that are too detailed or images of charcters - especially RO - because they often clash with what I imagined. And voices... voices can trigger many emotions. I mean, think about how many times you've heard a voice, and you go... "wow" and then you see the person lending their voice, and you're disappointed, because they look nothing like you imagined. It goes the other way around. For years, there's been this idea of what everyone sounds like... and if suddenly, there are voices, and they don't match at all... big turn off for me personally. The only reason I can see for (and would happily support) implemented voices or even some sort of TTS, is to make the game more accessible for those with some sort of visual impairment. For everything else, I feel like it is a waste and that the resources for voices would have been better used for something else. The charm for me with IF is, that it is all text. I use my imagination. I can ignore mentions of a single 'beard' somewhere and just continue to imagine a RO without it - I can imagine what my character sounds like - considering all the additional background story that my brain has worked out for him. The more visual and auditory information and displays are included, the more my imagination is limited and impacted. I grew up with chose your own adventure paperback books and the height of imagery was the depiction of a room or the occasional monster or trap, and I like it that way. Text is underappreciated today and yet, still the most powerful medium. Anyway, just my personal opinion of course and my old ass will stop ranting and rambling now :D

Personally, I'm not a fan of voices while I'm reading but it can add a lot of fun gor others who may enjoy this So long as it's optional, I wouldn't mind (; besides, if I'm lazy I would enjoy someone reading for me) Besides, it looks like you want your idea to bloom :3 Go for it !

Yeeeaahh I don't really like the idea of adding voice acting because I have a mental canon of how everyone sounds. I think adding an "official" canon voice to the MC would skronk that up for me. If none of the voices sound like I imagine, I'd be pretty sad. So as long as it's totally optional, it's fine o:

I agree with the sentiments so far-- wouldn't mind it as optional content but wouldn't utilize it myself. I already hear a specific voice in my head for my MC, and I think it'd be near impossible to capture the wide range of voices everyone imagines for their various MCs, even if multiple voice actors are engaged :P

For me, I feel like voice acting delays game release, so I'd say optional if doing so wouldn't impact how long it takes to release the game (or releasing the game without the option then adding the option later or something); if it would impact the how long it takes to release the game regardless, I'm not interested lol

Well, as long as it's only optional. Because for me it's absolutely unnecessary, at least when it's only for single voice clips. Maybe if there is a narrator for everything. When it came to the side stories I copied them all into a text to speech app and listened to them like an audiobook. But single sound clips sound more like a nuisance than anything, interrupting the flow of quiet reading, or interrupting any background music I might have turned on.

This is what I expect from those awful games on the play store where the options you really want to pick require in-app purchases. No thanks.
