I've been so excited for you to get to this one!

For context, this episode is set ~7 years after Agent Carter S2. It's not confirmed when exactly the SSR becomes SHIELD, but from Sousa's "rooting out" comment we can possibly infer that SHIELD is pretty new. As Jemma's "Peggy" disguise got her in without question, we can see that Peggy is clearly highly-ranked in SHIELD, but it seems likely (especially given the time period) that she isn't running it yet. Given how Agent Carter ended with Thompson getting shot, Peggy may now be running the New York office.

In Endgame Steve went back to 1949 to be with Peggy. Now It is not confirmed on whether that was another timeline though I think that is most likely the case. The reason I place the Peggy one shot after the season 2 series finale is to sort of fill in that gap of time and explain why Peggy and Sousa aren't together after that kiss. Thompson getting shot changed everything. We know Peggy blames herself when people around her get hurt. She then pushes everyone else away. She is back in New York and allowing bosses to control her in the one shot. The only thing that would have made her do that is guilt for getting Thompson killed and messing with the council which he warned her about so she stopped digging into them. This is all my headcanon and never clear up in the show but Sousa would be the only one left around in LA to investigate Thompson's death which would lead him to towards Hydra which is how we get here. It would take him a lot of years to gather enough evidence since Hydra is so sneaky.

Your reaction to Sousa was the best!! What a great surprise right?! I actually hadn’t seen Agent Carter until recently when I binged watched your reactions to the show - it was so enjoyable, and now I have a whole new appreciation for this episode and for him. Although I have always loved this episode anyway - so fun and clever! Yes as others have said, this is quite some time after the events of Agent Carter season 2, and we can infer from Sousa’s comments around Peggy near the start that they’re no longer in a relationship or closely working together. This season is so great, I can’t wait for you to see more of it!

By the time I started watching the MCU, the show had been cancelled, and since it was set far back in the past, I didn’t think it would be relevant to any future projects. Then Endgame came out, and the fandom was buzzing over Edwin Jarvis making an appearance, so I decided to watch it while I waited for the sixth season of SHIELD to come out. And I am glad I did because I would have felt like a fan left behind. There were ideas of having Sousa on the show in flashbacks in previous seasons of the show, but it never ended up working out. Obviously, with traveling back in time through the history of SHIELD, the show had to address Agent Carter in some capacity, and having him make an appearance was the perfect way to do it. And who knows what other characters from the past you might see later this season. Trust me, it’s already this good at episode 3, and it’s going to get better, but don’t get too comfortable. Those Chronicoms are going to throw a lot of curveballs at us. Also, I would like to point out that S7 was filmed back to back with S6 in 2019, about a year before it aired in the summer of 2020. This episode addressed the racial prejudice in the 50s, which just so happened to come out a month after the George Floyd riots started.
