Nathaniel Malick's story was revealed in 3x16 Paradise Lost. After Freddy's Funeral in 1970 both Gideon and Nathaniel were accepted into Hydra. They met with Whitehall and they rejected him when he tried to bring them to his side of Hydra instead of the side that worshipped Hive. They then did the ceremony with the bag and picking a stone to be chosen to go to Maveth and Nathaniel died and was sacrificed to Hive after Gideon cheated so he wasn't picked. So both Father and Son died in 1970 so this changed things so that they lived. Since Freddy didn't die the boys have yet to be brought into Hydra fully. Both Gideon and Nathaniel are technically just working with shield.

"So the past is doomed to repeat the present" -- I had forgotten about that line. I love how that's phrased.

Yeah, so we never got a chance to see what Nathaniel could have become because his brother screwed him over. That said, Gideon may have helped us a dodge a bullet by rigging that ceremony, because Nathaniel turns out to be just as ruthless as the rest of his family.

Couple of things to note Chastity McBryde, May’s cover name, is actually the name of a minor character in Marvel Comics. Like in The Winter Soldier, there are a few familiar names on the target list, both from the movies and the show: Peggy Carter, Nick Fury, and Bruce Banner are mentioned obviously. Then you have Victoria Hand, the red-streaked woman SHIELD agent from Season 1 who Ward killed in the Turn Turn Turn episode. Robert Gonzales, the de-facto leader of the “Real SHIELD” in Season 2. Susan Morse, the mother of Bobbi Morse who was briefly mentioned in “Parting Shot”. Isabelle Hartley, Hunter’s partner who got killed in the Season 2 opener. Gabe Jones and Jim Morita, two of the Howling Commandos from the first Captain America film. While they managed to get Cameron Palatas to reprise his role as young Gideon Malick from Season 3, Joel Dabney Courtney was unable to return to play Nathaniel Malick due to his commitments to The Kissing Booth movies, which led to the character being recast. And glad that you don’t remember about Nathaniel from Season 3, because back then, they did a good job making him appear as a timid young man who was following in the family business like his brother, but that last scene indicates that he is just ruthless as the rest of his family. Can’t wait to see your reaction to next week’s episode, because things are about to come to a head.

The question is did taking him Hostage and showing him powers influence his choice to attack Shield. To him they would seem like the bad guys.

Lyla

Such a fun reaction! And yes, as others have said, Nathaniel was meant to die the same year as his father, so he’s an added complication to everything. And don’t worry, you will get all the answers you want and need!

Funny enough the MCU has explored variants that look different though are the same character.
