Yes, that was Benny. There are so many actors that appeared on Supernatural and BSG that the list has it's own page on the Superwiki. There were 5 or 6 in this episode alone.

There were lots of easter eggs in this from the original 1978 series - the "toaster" cylon diagram from the opening segment, the Commander Adama's fighter was the type that they used in the original series, and when they do the fly-by during the decommissioning ceremony, the music that is used is the old show theme song. The original series was intended as a series of two hour movies over several years, but after the first one was such a hit, they pivoted at the last minute to a weekly television program, so it is fitting that the reboot started with a miniseries to re-introduce it, and while the original never had the time or budget to meet its original goals, the reboot had good funding and solid stories that went well beyond the original source material. There is also a prequel series for the 2004 reboot called Caprica that came out after the run of the show which deals with the world prior to the original human/cylon war. I like it, but some don't... and probably left for after the main series runs in full.

I think I was in 8th grade when the OG came out in 1978. LOVED that show.

I definitely loved the original, and even tolerated Galactica 1980.

The short answer for what is motivating the Cylons is actually there from the beginning, where she comes out and says that God told them to attack. (The original series had a non-human origin for the Cylons which was entirely scrapped in the reboot.)

I think Shelly's thinking (PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong) is that someone is pretending to be the Cylon God in order to cause them to attack the humans after 40 years of armistice. I will not place any comment on this line of thought at this time.
