Awesome analysis of BSG, especially so many of the themes you touched on not realizing that it was a remake of an earlier series! No spoilers whatsoever. The miniseries was released in 2003 so right after 9/11 and the impact that had on the psyche of society and television. It was clearly a dark series. 2 out of 3 children were killed in the making of this miniseries, which was not standard for television at the time! The series itself was produced by Ronald D. Moore of Star Trek, and he was very vocal with fans throughout the series, did commentary podcasts of episodes as we went and talked about how the stories were broken and plot lines changed as they went along. I can see a few things in the miniseries that were intended to so slightly differently, and others that were prophetic. You're in for quite a ride! One thing that was hinted at in this episode that you may have missed was that the officer at the armistice station at the very beginning was Boxey's father. He had a picture of Boxey and his wife on his desk, and the wife was with Boxey in the field when he was taken aboard the Raptor. As memory serves, they originally intended to do a sequence where they showed him showing up year after year after year with no Cylons, so I think he's actually in old age makeup in that scene. (The other woman who spoke with an accent who asked Apollo if she knew anything about the fleet at Gemenon was Mrs. Edwards James Olmos. :))

"You're like her?" Remember, Caprica 6 (that's how many people reference the instance of model #6 that Baltar knew on Caprica) said that there are 12 models, and that she's #6? Well, you've now met models 2 (Leoben), 5 (Doral), and 8 (Boomer and the instance who came aboard Ragnar Station at the very end of the miniseries). Just eight more to go. :-)

Your comment near the end, "She is smoking!" Years ago, Tricia Helfer and Katee Sackhoff were the guests of honor on a fundraising motorcycle ride; at one of the stops I got a picture with the both of them. Talk about smokin! (them, not me. :) )

"Life here... began out there..." from the "sacred scrolls" was part of the opening to the original series.

Starbuck smoking cigars is another reach back to the original series, as that was an affectation of the original Starbuck, played by Dirk Benedict. (Hers is bigger though, as one might expect)

I for one am VERY glad that they defaulted to the president they did. Imagine if they had a president like Lord Dampnut?
