Sam was gonna take the mark to trap amara, it would work in a similar way to trap god

Karen Gauck

I forgot how much I dislike this episode.

Sam's losing hope was clearer and more organic I think, as written in Robert Beren's script. When Chuck started showing Sam the future, the vision started with the part that happened like in the climax scene - Cas and Dean arrived at the casino, yada, yada, until the part where that ball thingy rolled to Sam's feet, he picked it up, took it, and then smashed it. Chuck then disappeared and he was successfully presumed to be caged like Amara. Then the next vision Sam saw was the four of them in the bunker planning a movie, when Jody called to inform them that Claire died. So, basically, Sam saw his vision start to come to pass in the actual timeline, and he was afraid that whatever followed would also come to pass - that the monsters' apocalypse would prevail with Chuck gone and without Chuck's intervention. He cannot go through with the plan. He only got a few seconds to decide and he let his fear take over, poor Sam ...

One of my top three episodes of the season. (minus the weird vampire scene that makes me cringe XD)

When I first saw this episode, I was over the moon and this is one of my favorite episodes in this season, and I was so happy that Dean and Cas resolved their argument. Dean said sorry and admitted his anger was the main issue that led him to not forgive Cas easily, and some even said that it was misplaced. I am now not in the same frame of mind as before and now feel that his anger was justified, albeit it was not shown organically on screen as it spanned and cumulated multiple episodes (I've written my comments about it in prior reaction videos), but in the grand scheme of things, I also feel that this episode was mainly for Cas - Cas needed his forgiveness, and Dean needed to forgive him - it's either forgiveness or getting over his anger at Cas, and Bobo Berens chose for Dean to do both. Bobo started this arc in S14, he said that he needed to close this massive story that people are so emotionally invested in, so much so that he forwent S2 Doom Patrol, and imo he delivered it here. *in the reply are some major points that resonated heavily with me, taken from tumblr that led to my current stance, and they are DeanCas heavy*

Cas and Sam basically made Dean the caretaker of soulless Jack when they all prior to this agreed to co-parent him. Sam used hunting as an escapism while Cas hid Big Bad Parenting Stuff from Dean and went off to meet Anael. Cas all but demanded Dean to parent Jack (even though Sam is much better in understanding Jack - what the heck was that, does it even register to Cas that Sam would be the better choice?) and take care of Jack's emotions in Peace of Mind, even though Dean expressed discomfort over his memories of soulless Sam, while Sam didn't even want to rest after Ouroboros even when Dean verbally told him that he needed the time and rest. Dean then operates under the idea that soulless Jack is stable and there’s no additional cause for alarm, just with a few precautionary stipulations - no using powers without the three present. And then Mary died .... things happened, yada, yada .. By this episode, The Trap, Dean has given up trying to get Cas to change or hold him accountable for his lack of communication and withdrawal to do his "thing" on his own or "for everyone's good". Cas genuinely feels that his concealing his problems and making every hard choice by himself with no support is a good and worthy way of behaving and Dean has to accept it "‘cause it’s Cas." Cas sort of gave Dean ultimatums over it, if you squint, and Dean rolled over. And Dean wants to get back together. Dean needs Cas's support and Cas needs his. He looks at everything Cas is and decides that Cas's avoidance and want to protect the family is just woven into the fabric of him, and Dean decides to accept that. It's something he loves about him as much as he resents it. Cas's chivalry is a feature and a bug. Dean loves him for it. It makes his life hell sometimes. It is very much Dean giving Cas the kind of compassion no one else in Cas's life ever has least of all Cas himself. It's not so much Dean forgiving Cas because he believes Cas has taken real accountability for what he did wrong, as it feels like it's Dean forgiving Cas because he looked at the ways Cas has hurt him and he looks at Cas's emotional needs and decided that giving Cas grace and forgiving him was more important. Cas knows what lies behind Dean's sometimes razor-sharp words, and Dean knows what lies behind Cas's sometimes inexplicable lone-hero actions. The thing with Jack was unique, because this time, Cas did the lone wolf thing during a critical risk period, and it was in relation to co-parenting rather than "Heaven business." As for Dean's anger issues, yes, he has every right to be angry about the situation. He's backtracking now on his own anger and frustration because he has emotions and they have now become an issue; he needs to realize and feel what they are becoming as a consequence of those emotions - that they, Dean and Cas, had become fragmented, and he certainly doesn't want that at all ... Dean and Cas are finding their way back to each other after the Death of a Child trope. They were getting back together and trying to heal even before Jack reappeared. Clearly, it's a stress-tested relationship. They knew where they stood now, hopefully ...

This is my favorite episode in season 15! Bobo berens knows these characters very well and writes them beautifully, we finally learn what sam's visions actually are, they're not potential ending that chuck is currently writing, they're his memories of other sams and other deans and how their stories ended, AUs, so all other Sams and deans in the multiverse gave chuck his favorite ending so what makes this Sam and this dean different? I haven't seen cas in any of those visions Sam's been having so maybe that's what's different, maybe all those other sams and deans never had a cas to unlock their full chaotic potentials of fucking up Chuck's plans 😂, they never formed team free will, they isolated themselves, just my headcanon but I am sticking with it. I know chuck would say anything to save himself and as he himself said in last season's finale "writers lie" however in this case I actually do believe him for many reasons, reason number 1 is we saw that whenever dean loses cas he's done with life so that tracks, reason number 2: in order to lock amara up chuck needed a lock on her metaphorical cage and that lock was the mark that he trusted lucifer with and it drove him insane then lucifer passed it down to cain so it was later called the mark of cain but its purpose was to ensure that amara stays locked away so it makes perfect sense that in order to lock chuck away someone needs to bare the mark since they're using the same spell and since dean already did that before and he suffered of course cas offered to take that burden on himself to protect Sam and dean however a suped up angel is much more dangerous to humanity than a suped up human so when the mark inevitably drives cas crazy and he becomes dangerous the only chance humanity will have is by dean having to bury cas in the Malek box since he's the only one who would be able to reach cas at that stage enough to convince him to get into the Malek box evident by dean saying "ever since I had to bury him in the Malek box" not "we had to bury him" but "I" dean was the only one who could do that, the only one cas no matter how crazy would allow to convince him, I could read a million fan fics of that future, we see dean with his eyes closed for a bit in that future vision before he and Sam go on their last hunt and some fans pointed out that that could be dean praying to cas in the Malek box, keeping him company and I absolutely love that, so tragic but so romantic and as long as it's not the actual ending I am down for exploring different possibilities, if you wanna check out that long shot on dean with his eyes closed yourself it's the scene right after dean's purgatory prayer to cas, reason number 3: we actually saw Chuck's vision already starting to play out when cas was saying I will take the mark. So I 💯 believe Sam did the right thing by not crushing that ball. Everything in purgatory was glorious, bobo bringing back all the purgatory nostalgia with dean looking for cas, praying to him like he prayed to him every night in purgatory, also dean having to choose between going back home to Sam or staying in purgatory looking for cas, bobo literally checked all the purgatory boxes, he even had them mention Benny, which hello why would you tell me he's dead? I will believe it when I see it, I will headcanon that that leviathan is lying, dean actually got on his knees crying asking for cas's forgiveness I'm gonna die, only cas and only purgatory where it feels pure can make dean admit his anger issues outloud, that's first step towards getting better, up till now he always deflected but here he's vulnerable row pure and I love him so much, he can say I don't need cas as much as he wants but whenever he's actually confronted with the possibility of actually losing cas he panics, you know that saying you only know something's value when it's gone and that proud joyful involuntarily smile he had on his face when cas revealed the leviathan blossom from under his trenchcoat and said "it got a little smooched" so cute, cas said that so cutely dean couldn't help but smile even though he tried to hide it quickly after, cas making dean smile/laugh due to his earnestness is so endearing and the best thing ever, cas must've felt so good to hear dean say "you did it, cas" to have dean acknowledge when he brings them a win not only his fuck ups must have made him feel better about himself 🥺. Most importantly cas was waiting under that tree near the portal for dean, he was never going to leave without dean, I wish we saw cas's reaction to dean's prayer, I have to wonder did cas cry hearing it? Did he smile? Did his eyes roll back like we saw happen when dean prayed to him last season before he made the empty deal to save jack? Did cas reply to dean's prayer out loud? I can only imagine how he felt I would also read a million fics of cas's POV during dean's prayer, dean got on his knees!! That's what you do when you propose and he was willing to repeat it all to cas's face when they reunited and maybe even say more but cas cut him short because the rip was about to close and maybe also because if he heard dean say all of that to his face there's a huge possibility that it would make him so happy that the empty would come for him right there and then like it invaded heaven, it can invade purgatory I bet, but it will be my forever headcanon that dean wanted to say I love you then and there, no one can convince me otherwise, they are one purgaytory visit away from getting married I'm telling you. Sam and Eileen broke my heart! The fact that chuck used Eileen to spy on the Winchesters is so fucked up, I get why she would be questioning everything, just like dean was, the conversation Sam and Eileen have here about what's real and what's not is exactly the same conversation dean and cas had in episode 2 this season, cas told dean "you asked what about all of this is real? We Are!" And here Eileen say that she doesn't know what's real anymore and Sam kisses her and tells her that "he knows that was real" reassuring her, the only difference between saileen and destiel was the kiss because of course the hetero pairing is allowed to kiss, actually saileen and destiel are paralleled throughout this season even at the end here with Eileen walking up the bunker's stairs and leaving while Sam looks up at her sadly is exactly what happened with dean and cas in episode 3, it's glaringly obvious that it makes me scream "just do it!" Like you did here, why does it have to just be subtext!! Dean and cas are actually so good for each other despite all their ups and downs, ultimately they make each other better, cas makes dean confront lots of things about himself he buried all along and makes him want to strive to be a better person, dean makes cas more human, taught him so much, taught him to love, I also laugh everytime I watch this episode when cas tackles Eileen to the ground when she attacks dean 🤣, coz dean is like "Eileen! I don't wanna hurt you" then comes cas like "bitch, that's my man!!" 😂 Hilarious. As you said this episode proves that Sam and dean ending up alone won't be a tragic ending just for the fans but most importantly for Sam and dean themselves, Sam and dean grew so much since season 1 and they expanded their circle and their support system and they have people they love and plan a future with and they deserve a happy ending with their loved ones, speaking of loved ones, jack my baby 🤗🥺 it's interesting what you say about jack possibly being as strong as chuck and how chuck is possibly afraid of jack and that maybe combining grace and human soul is too powerful (another reason why dean and cas having a profound bond is so powerful) that would make sense why chuck strictly forbids angels from getting with humans and nephilims were considered an abomination and get killed immediately, maybe chuck was afraid of nephilims, that being said he did kill jack by just snapping his finger in last season's finale so who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️

Drunk Shelley reaction is always fun Shelley reaction! Yes, the divorce arc is over. And as Hasnaa said, it's understandable why Eileen doesn't know what's real - first she found out she'd been used as Chuck's tool and then he literally puppeted her to torture Sam. And I can't help thinking that Sam gave up hope because he saw himself not just as a vampire, but as a ridiculous vampire. Ahh there is so much in this episode! I don't think Dean and Cas are even subtext any more, by now it's textually clear that they are a romantic partnership.

rose mnor

Hasnaa, you said "maybe combining grace and human soul is too powerful" and Chuck "he did kill jack by just snapping his finger in last season's finale so who knows" ... Jack last season didn't have his soul so you have a point there - maybe that's why Chuck can kill Jack that time coz he lacks that one thing that a nephilim should have, that like you said Chuck was so scared of so much so that he forbade angel and human relationship ...

@rose mnor great point

AdoptDontShopPets

Y’all know I love Jensen to death, but his camp acting with those vampire teeth always has me ROTFLMAO.

AdoptDontShopPets

I liked Chuck giving the glimpses of the future if they were to trap him in the cage. What I absolutely hated was the bullet wound connection between Chuck and Sam vanishing because Sam LOST HOPE. I cannot roll my eyes hard enough at that horrible, cliche plot point. Somebody at the studio should have stepped in and said that was stupid…rewrite!

Susan Stork

Yeah, I only enjoy, somewhat, the Dean and Cas parts of the episode. Overall, it's not great, in my opinion.

rose mnor

Yeah ... that lost hope thing ... not doing it for me either ...

Amye Sabin

I do like that way better.

Glad to see Jack might finally be back on the Board, but I don't trust Billie's influence over him. She's always hated the Winchesters. Her using Jack to do her bidding is the same as Duma using Jack to do her bidding. Hopefully Jack goes to the Bunker and his three Dad's influence will countermand anything Billie wants to use him for. Is Eileen leaving Sam, or just leaving the Bunker. I got the impression she just needed some time to come to terms with everything. I hope we see her again, but if not, at least we know she's alive again. Yay Claire's dead!!!!! At least in the God-caged future. I can't STAND her. But boo about Donna & Alex. I tend to believe Chuck's vision because of Cas going to take the MoC. That happens separately without Dean & Cas knowning what Chuck is showing Sam, so it seems organic. And it makes sense that the monsters would rage out of control with God being caged. Honestly if having Cas take the MoC means a caged God, then I would prefer him uncaged. I don't want Cas to take that on. Or Sam, Eileen or any of their other friends.
