As much as I like this episode I think I can't love it as much as I want to because of the obvious lack of cas, I don't like him being excluded from the family like that, as if cas would miss Jack's birthday, I think Mrs butters said they should make up for all the holidays they didn't celebrate before so they just celebrated all the holidays maybe in the span of a week or a month not that a year has passed but still, why wouldn't Sam and dean call cas and tell him that they're celebrating Jack's birthday?! I guess if cas was there he might have actually finally felt like a part of the family and gotten so happy that the empty would come for him?? I hate that I am afraid of cas getting happy now, I think if cas was here he also might have been harder to get distracted by Mrs butters food and would've been more suspicious of her and he might have also known what wood nimphs are capable of and warned the boys. I really hate that Sam and dean had no trouble executing monsters without any investigation, hearing dean says this is so much easier no investigation no nothing just a bell ring and decapitation is horrifying. The men of letters literally tourtured this creature and molded it to be their war machine, they brainwashed a wood nimph to be subservient to them, these men where not her family, they were her oppressors, she just doesn't realize it or have a case of Stockholm syndrome, I am glad Sam and dean allowed her to go back to the woods instead of continue using her even though it would've made their live much easier. I love dean's appron, I don't mind the night gown, the hat is a bit too much, but It's actually the same outfit dean wore in Scoobynatural and dean described as being very comfortable, I am happy whenever dean feels very comfortable and he definitely was in this episode in so many ways, he was so kid like, which he never got to be 🥺.

I liked this episode. We have been hit by a string of heavy-hitter episodes and now the characters needed a lighter one in order to "breathe", so to speak. A talk needed to happen between Dean and Jack, as they are themselves - not as 'angry Dean' and 'soulless Jack' - after all that had happened so far. And this was the first one that they were able to since Moriah ... and we finally got one here ... There was not much change in Dean's feelings toward Jack, as all this time that happened in the previous episodes were issues that happened TO Jack, not between them. There were no developments whatsoever so far that imo, contributed towards any changes in regards to Dean's emotional perspective TOWARDS Jack, so the status quo in those matters was on point imo, in that they still retain that emotional continuity ... It seemed to me they were not celebrating the holidays on the actual day ... Mrs. B did say that they would be too busy hunting to do any celebrating, imo that's why she made those celebratory dinners for them to enjoy at the times when they still could ... and to not wait for the actual date of that holidays to come ... Also, it seemed a very sweet gesture to me that Dean made Jack a cake to "celebrate" his birthday after Mrs. B already left ... This, imo was why Cas was not there as Cas was busy looking for Amara - imo it was not even Jack's actual birthday, just a made-up or impromptu one so that Jack could experience a "birthday celebration" after Sam's one (courtesy of Mrs. B favoritism in Sam) .... sort of ... Sam's actual birth date was on May 2 and Jack's was May 18, there are 16 days in between. It's hard to assume that Cas wouldn't have dropped by the bunker for more than 2 weeks, without checking up on his newly souled son, hence why I think that it was not on an actual 'birth date' celebration. And if Cas was there, I don't think that he would have left them with a non-human that they didn't know much about.

Interesting insight on the comparison between Ms. Butters and Mary, Shelley. I've always thought this episode would have made sense in S12 or S13 when Mary was still around. Now THAT would have made for a compelling watch. To me, anyway. Here in S15 it feels like an afterthought. The ridiculousness of it fits in with the rest of the cartoonish, OTT vibe of the season, though....so at least there's consistency, right!? The Scoobynatural and the Ghostbusters call backs/easter eggs were cool if you're into that (I'm not, personally). All in all I thought Meagan Fey did a great job with the material. She had excellent timing and I thought she felt very out of place. What baffles me about S15 is that they have spent a lot of time and effort on resume padding and audition reels for the cast and the crew, and that's totally fair considering many, if not all have all had steady employment for 15 years. But they let the actual story take a backseat, and it's so obvious that it feels blatant. There is a lot of depth in the talent pool with everyone associated with the show, so I'm not sure why this is what the last season looks like. Not when we've had consistent examples of what fan service CAN look like (from all the seasons past) with good writing and execution. I'm still enjoying your reactions though. Very much so.

"Side note, Why are "monsters" on holiday themed episodes always ripping off Sam's finger nails?" Right...!? It was much better and more effective S3. Sam barely even bat an eyelash in this episode.

Like rose said, this is a badly needed lighter episode – it's all dark from here on - and even so it shows us the real difficulties the characters are facing. A podcast I used to follow (Monster of the Week) got very frustrated because the presenters saw so many episodes as "filler" or padding that didn't advance the underlying story arc, but I don't see any of the episodes as filler – they are rounding out characters and longstanding stories, drawing on the history of the show to do so, and the arc is moving relentlessly on, sometimes in the background but always there. There's only one episode that seems out of place to me, and we haven't had that one yet. This episode was written by Jeremy Adams who also wrote Last Call this season, and Scoobynatural in s15 – he was brought back to fill a gap left by Steve Yockey leaving to create The Flight Attendant, and he sneaks in callbacks to Scoobynatural - mainly in Dean's wardrobe! There's something so poignant about the way Dean has been allowing his soft side to emerge openly just as the pressures on him to be hard are becoming unbearable. This is a "last holiday" in the sense that it's a last chance for Dean to just be the child he never was and for Sam to have an uncomplicated romantic date with Eileen, and for the two of them to go and just do their job fighting monsters, without the shades of grey that monster stories have always brought before. Of course it's an illusion (the vampires in the first hunt rightly raised suspicions) and it's not that simple because nothing ever is, it's a little dream-like bubble. I tend to think the events in the episode take no more than a week or two - that could have been made more explicit, but Mrs Butters does say at the beginning that she's going to make sure they have all the holidays they've missed over the years, and the frantic pacing suggests Sam and Dean are going out to kill monsters every day and coming back to a different holiday every night. If it was longer, Cas would come back - and yes it's a shame he can't be there, but he would have sussed out Mrs B straightaway.

I remember watching this episode while eating breakfast (like I did with most spn eps) and when the fingernail thing happened, I really wished they rather had shown exploding brains again or something.

I really like this episode. I know it seems like a one off, but I think the point was to let Dean say somethings to Jack and to demonstrate his forgiveness. I really like Mrs. Butters and in her trying to kill Jack he was able to hear Sam and especially Dean defend him. To hear how they really feel about him. It's of course a complicated relationship, but that's pretty standard for Winchesters. And man I wish they could use hat telescope

This episode was a great example of how S15 is inserting callbacks to things in old episodes and it just feels totally out of place and obvious, and just adds no value or even fun nostalgia. The fingernails was one, along with the Dean grenade launcher (?) and Sam with mjolnier.

AdoptDontShopPets

Yes. The whole purpose of identifying the final season in advance was so they could do a great final story…and yet we still get the same old MOTW or more about MOL.

AdoptDontShopPets

I enjoyed the episode in general, and yet was still anxious to really get on with the main Chuck storyline. I did enjoy that Dean got to be happy for a little while and they all got to celebrate holidays. I thin them killing those vamps on the first monster radar mission, was a purposeful clue that this was all not going to be a good thing. You are right that it did feel a little out of character for them to immediately trust the radar and go in to kill without any canvassing or stakeouts.

Vel

Agreed. I don't mind that some loose ends are being tied up, but the deconstruction and rewriting of everything that came before (that is not serving the story) comes off as passive aggressive overshadowing more than a clever callback.

Vel

Yeah... this "story" really felt like it was something they were checking off a list of things that they thought fans would want. I don't hate the concept, and I get what they were trying to do with the parallels. It just felt a little too much like flanderization for my taste.

When almost all of the seasons of Supernatural have 20+ episodes, the story can't be rushed. It needs to breathe at times, even in the last season. That is just how proper pacing of a story works. It's not like the main characters are just sitting there doing nothing when they would need to do something to advance the main storyline. The main storyline is at a point where nothing significant has to happen. I understand if some people don't like certain episodes but I don't really get why would you complain about "fillers" in a 20 episode season.

I enjoyed this a little more on rewatch than I did at the time it aired. I think I was initially disappointed with it because I felt like in what was the final season, with so much on the line ..it just felt a little out of place. Then again, I admit to kind of being disappointed w s15 as a whole. Because we know what the show is capable of at its best...I guess I expected every episode of the final season to be a banger and knock our socks off. But on rewatch I could appreciate this episode for what it was-- just a light hearted breather. I did really love seeing the boys get to celebrate different holidays and relax a bit. I totally agree on not liking seeing them just kill monsters without knowing anything about them. The boys are better than that. I hated that Cas wasn't in this episode but I get that he couldn't be or he would have seen through Mrs Butters. I think I laughed more at your reaction than the episode itself lol. Esp during the fingernail scene lol. (but agree....so gross!! I couldn't watch either so I just watched you during it.) Lol I can't believe we are almost done. I am very very curious to see your reactions as the series wraps up. Anyway, great reaction as usual. 🙂

I agree with everything you two have said here.

I actually really enjoy this episode. I like Mrs butters and I also like the dean and jack talk. As a whole, season 15, is not one of my favorite seasons but I do enjoy some episodes. I'm not someone who has a problem with the MOW, like another reactor I can think of; I just enjoy episodes even if they are not season storyline related.

Vel

Filler episodes is not the problem. Bad filler episodes, when you have talented writers, cast and crew in the 15th and final season IS a problem.

This season, in my opinion, seriously suffered in terms of losing Steve Yockey's touch, who's really a great master in subverting the plot of an episode, in a slot meant for a plot-heavy one. Yockey, who gave us Advanced Thanatology, Nihilism, and Ourosboros, to name a few. In S15, those replacement rotation writers for Yockey's remaining slots were Andrew Dabb who came up with Heroes Journey, and this episode, by Jeremy Adams (from what I can surmise of the slot rotation from S14, not from any official record). We saw how Dabb's became such a misinterpreted colossal of an episode, and this one became a "filler" with a plot-heavy character focussed - mainly on Dean and Jack. Just imagine if we had gotten more of Yockey's styled episodes (esp his 'looking into Dean's psyche' ones) - Dean's conflicting feelings regarding Jack exposed and played out for us to actually see and not only hear - such a loss to the show in general and to S15 in particular. About the monsters being killed off without rhyme or reason, this is just my musings but - I think, it was kind of the point? We moan and groan collectively here, me included, that it was such a regression on Sam and Dean's part - their hunting "procedures" if you will, but really, if we look at Heroes Journey - with the main ep plot being Chuck's heavily messing with them in every which way, from the boys' skills, hunting method/techniques, to even Dean's lackluster inspirational speech to Sam, plus some such whatevs; ... ... meanwhile, this episode's hunting without prior investigation ... the main plot is that the monster was being "victimized" by the humans for crying out loud - it was kind of the running theme of the episode is what I am saying ... they even shaded it in the episode ... could it even be the parallel between Dean-human and Jack-monster, if we squint? ... like, we wanted the humans to be more sympathetic to the monster - yes/no? ... Jack and Mrs. B, both monster-like beings, yearn for the family that they've lost through means beyond their control. And Jack yearned to have Dean's affections back and to be welcomed back, while Dean was holding onto the tight rein of his emotions, which he felt were the only thing in control that he had of himself right now, due to Chuck's machinations in their universe ... ... and if we had gotten Yockey, we might have had more nuanced episodes touching upon those themes ... via both ep 10 and 14 broad strokes of dealing with monsters with their families, then subverting it on its head by coming back to the main players, Nihilism+Ourosboros style *sigh - wishing upon what could have been*

While it is weirdly out of place and without Cas, I liked seeing the boys enjoy the holidays they never got to do and with so much flair. I think it only covered days vs being a year with Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, 4th of July and Sam's birthday to make up for all they missed. It was so nice to see those moments with Jack too, small things most people underestimate so it's easy to adore those moments of carving pumpkins, passing mashed potatoes, etc. They were all so happy and seeing him get a crash course of those was still nice even in it's limited time. Dean's sloppy cake for Jack at the end made at least ties back into the makeshift Christmas he tried to give Sammy as a kid. It doesn't have to be picture perfect to truly be special and I am glad Jack got to be part of a real moment with them and blow out the candle! Jack also got his own "son of a bitch" which was a clap moment for me. And I cracked up when Dean yeeted him through the door so they could escape the room. Poor Sam never gets to get his nails when holiday enthusiasts are on this show.
