Ghost Rider had 2 movies. You can google the first movie and it will give you some basic info on the character without spoiling what's going on in the show. Some would say don't google it, go in blind. Some would say there are events in the show that would mean more if you knew who he is. Your choice.

TES

Such a great season. I think seasons five and seven are my favorite but this is the tightest one probably. The show is never the same after this, and so many brilliant and beautiful moments are up ahead

TES

I definitely think googling it has the risk of spoiling.

This season is Agents of SHIELD after dark.

Love this episode ❣️

Gary Marshall

Always love these opening episodes as they do such a great job of setting up multiple storylines. Also, seeing the character growth in each of our core cast is interesting to see.

Laurel

I'd never even heard Ghost Rider's name going into season 4 and I don't think I missed out on anything.

What a compelling and fresh season opener! I feel like in that opening scene they quickly manage to show how much the show has been updated for season 4 - the darker visuals and even more impressive special effects in particular. I love how much this episode manages to introduce so many future vital aspects to the season absolutely seamlessly, without ever letting on where they are going. I can’t wait to see your reaction to how they’re followed through! And just apart from the great plotting and pacing, as usual the character work is great. Daisy is sadly spiralling, so fixated on not gaining any attachments for fear of losing them. Although you’re right, she’s certainly a vigilante rather than a villain, she’s just having her goth phase! And each character has been moved on a little more, and has been given new things to deal and grapple with for this season - most notably perhaps Fitz, with Radcliffe’s friendship and the introduction of AIDA - which I will not comment on at all, you’ll just have to see where it goes! Season 4 is certainly a fan favourite, and for a good reason. In my opinion there are no bad (or even average) episodes, and one of the best episodes of the entire series. I can’t wait for you to go on this ride!

Love season 4. So much exciting new developments. We are getting into the mystical side of the MCU. After Captain America civil war we got another MCU Movie Doctor Strange. The show always ties in and this time it is more a thematic tie in with supernatural elements coming into the show like the ghost and ghost rider. In the 3 finale Coulson said called the director so the audience knew before the start of the season that shield would have a new director in 4. Daisy is trying so hard to reverted to her old self. Living in LA in her van separate from the world. Coulson didn't like the accords but with him not being director now they are now being enforced on the inhumans. A heads up there is a small mini series that takes place after 4x8 that to you should watch. It is not long at all.

You have to remember vigilantism often crosses lines that makes what they do illegal. TBF he isn't JUST a vigilante. He is still murdering people, regardless of how bad of people they are, even while they're defenseless... which is not what shield or Daisy do.

Ian Fleming

Some believed (at the time) that the move to the 10pm "death slot" would kill the show, and I imagine that possibility was probably the network's intention, but it seems to have reinvigorated AoS.

Isaac Thomas

Or as they call it in the show, "pods", the mini arcs of the season that will converge in a satisfying way in the finale.

Kelly Parks

This season the show aired an hour later than before, so the network gave them more leeway with sex and violence.

Laurel

Season 4 aired and took place in 2016-2017 (remember Civil War took place in the antepenultimate episode of season 3) so yeah Fury was still off doing his own thing at this point, he's not the director as you sussed out. Speaking of which, the fact that this season is seven years old yet the AI stuff (or mimicry, as Radcliffe calls it) is more applicable and within reach than ever is wild lol. Re: Daisy, I don't think it's necessarily that May thinks the worst of her as it is she's pragmatic. She also provides a counterweight to Coulson, who of course has some rose-colored glasses when it comes to Daisy. Not that Daisy is bad, she's a net benefit to society, but currently she doesn't care much about collateral. For instance, we see that in her pursuit of taking away the Watchdogs' finances and escape routes, she demolished an entire bank, partially collapsed a bridge, caused multiple low-level earthquakes, and whatever else there presumably is that wasn't mentioned in dialogue. People likely have gotten hurt in the crossfire, plus property damage and inconveniencing the innocent people who needed to use the bank or bridge. Again, a net benefit! The Watchdogs should absolutely be pursued. But there is still ocllateral damage that she isn't really mitigating the way she once would have. Media and police reports I'm sure don't help her case either, which is all the info SHIELD team is privy to since Daisy isn't in contact with any of them (except Yo-Yo, who's keeping her secret). I don't think May *believes* the worst of Daisy, but she has to *consider* the worst. To say nothing of Daisy's *self*-destruction, including but not limited to her not wearing her gauntlets, thus allowing her powers to harm her for no reason other than she thinks she deserves it. The latter is a scene I really loved, where Ghost Rider is judging her. Here's a being who causes murder and mayhem — yet he rightfully deems Daisy unworthy of his wrath.

If you've never heard of him, how do you know you haven't missed anything? You should google it, but don't watch the movies. They weren't very good.

Laurel

I said I *hadn't* heard of him. This is not my first time watching the show. I googled who Ghost Rider was after the season and don't feel I missed out on anything. Additionally, as Matthew said, googling him runs a risk of finding something that'll spoil the show.

Lyla

Great points Laurel! Very well explained about May and Daisy. I love how complex and interesting the characters are, that we can make insights like this!
