You're absolutely right. This season is darker, surely the darkest since season 4. And even though Mulder is missing, it always was one of the fan favorite seasons. Surely better than season 7. Yes it has a "back to the roots vibe". The tone of this season matches the tone of the first 4 seasons quite well, with it's focus on classic monster of the weeks, less humor, and less experiments. Not saying that humor or experiments wouldn't work with The X Files. Season 5 and 6 had lots of well received humor and experiments, but season 7 kinda overstretched it, and kinda lost its path while doing it. This here is almost like a reboot, that was desperately needed. Chris Carter always intended The X Files to be a horror-esque show. And it seems this vision is back now. At least in this season.

Just in case it was missed: The cops who died in the teaser were definitely asleep and died in their dreams. One was in the car, the other in his bed. Enjoyable reaction video of a very dark episode!

I always look up the episode before I watch the reaction as a reminder - but this one had a great reddit. No spoilers so no worries, but I enjoyed reading this because I was one of those fans that watched in real time and missed out on appreciating how great some of these episodes were because of my shipping goggles...lol. I haven't made that same mistake since then. You live and learn. "We were crack addicts wanting our Mulder and Scully fix and weren't primed or really capable at the time of really appreciating what we had in front of us. We should organize a letter of apology for Robert with 10,000 signatures and present it to him at a convention someday. Perhaps more like "We love Agent Doggett" might go over better than an apology, lol. Either way, he's terribly under-appreciated and brought a real grounded element to the show when it was needed most." "I’ve recently completed a full rewatch of the series and movies, and Dogget stood out as one of my favourite aspects of the entire series." https://www.reddit.com/r/XFiles/comments/15zwxed/agent_doggett_via_negativa_and_the_apology_owed/ Hell yes to all of this... ETA: There is a spoiler for an upcoming character - but it's just the name of the character.

i love how they're building doggett as a character and how are you taking it. back in my first watch i didn't appreciate the episodes as i should because i was too focused on mulder's absence, but robert patrick did such a good job and i won't say more because spoilers. also poor scully, she can't take a break.

Doggett is extremely disliked among hardcore shippers because they viewed him (and some still do) as "Mulder's replacement attempt", when in fact, he is the total opposite of Mulder in so many ways. He is a well crafted character, that's all I can say without spoiling things. I am glad you are enjoying the season, because it's one of my favorites along with season six.

Season 8 a fan favorite? I don't know what kind of fans you talked to, but that was definitely not the case.

Wolfgang Engel

What I mean is, that season 8 is considered to be one of the better seasons among fans. It was surely better received than season 7, 9, 10, and 11. And the ratings of season 8 remained high on the same level as season 6 and 7, the decline came afterwards. Of course seasons 1-6 will always be X Files on its peak of popularity. I didn't say THE fan favorite, but ONE of the favorite seasons.

Wolfgang Engel

I mean, the writers made clear from the beginning, that Doggett is more of a placeholder and an addition and not a replacement. The thing is, people have their fan feelings, and Doggett was surely not something they asked for. I think today in the retrospective,he gets more respect than he got back then.

It is useless discussing "favorite" seasons or which episode / season is better. As I've witnessed on Facebook, Reddit and Twitter, it mostly results in e-fighting. Some people cannot grasp that a certain fan like myself dislikes the episode "Humbug" or highly enjoys "Terms of Endearment". It's similar with seasons just like episodes. And some will even go so far as to say that a person is not a true fan if he/she likes or dislikes a particular season or episode. That's why I avoid making generalizations about "fan favorites", because there will always be someone who takes issue with that or even gets offended. With that being said, I do find season eight in many ways a huge improvement over season seven. I mean season seven is probably my 2nd least favorite of the original series. And I don't consider the revival seasons canon, so I'm speaking strictly about the original X-Files. And yeah... if you go to any discussion where hardcore shippers are participating, I advise you not to say that season eight is one of the favorite seasons. I tried that once. Speaking from experience.

I don't know if you post on Idealistshaven, which was basically the biggest X-Files community during its original airing, and is now a closed community of mostly hardcore shippers... but you will have a hard time finding anyone over there who really likes Doggett as a character. No matter what the writers intended, many see him as a "competition" to Mulder, if not a replacement. Some took great issue with scenes such as Doggett rescuing and holding Scully in his arms in "Roadrunners", or holding a crying Scully on the floor in "Without". Many fandoms can be pretty toxic, and the XF fandom is no exception.

Wolfgang Engel

To be honest, I'm not a shipper, and I don't communicate much with shippers. Without wanting to be rude or to insult anyone, that was always the more annoying and toxic part of the fandom to me. But that's not the case with the whole fandom.

I postet on TXF.net a lot, during the shows original run. I miss that forum. (Edit: Just remembered, that was a german fan forum) They were very dedicated and diving deep into every aspect of the show. They had discussion threads to every season, every single episode/movie and even a section for the Lone Gunmen spinoff. And each character who appeared more than 2 times in the show made an entry in a compendium. THIS was fandom for me. This was a celebration of the X Files universe. And not just shipping Mulder and Scully. Nothing wrong about that, but sometimes I feel that's the only thing that's still left today. And that was different during the original run, there was way more discussion in the fandom about various aspects of the show.

Wolfgang Engel

I say what I want to say. The internet teached me one thing: Don't be scared to offend people. 😂

MCJS

Contentious comment ahead: I have seen every X-Files episode at least once, but I now don't watch any Mulderless episodes at all. This has nothing to do with shipping, it's because my enjoyment of the series comes from the dynamics of the personal and professional relationship between Mulder and Scully. Without that, I don't have a reason to watch The X-Files any more than any other series. (I should also say that a huge factor is that my acquired brain injury means that I don't watch any TV or films and have to severely limit my screen time as I get very ill from sensory overload, so I only watch things I really value.) 👽👍👽👍👽👍

I once read a medical article about suicide by table saw. Pretty horrific. And most horrific to me was the fact that it happened enough times that someone could write an article about it.
