This is just the audio from my first attempt to put some video up on the Patreon: I did a live reaction to an interview that Bill Maher did with Spin magazine (that's right, SPIN MAGAZINE) in the year of our lord, two thousand and twenty four. I know I said I was going to take a break from talking about all of his 2024 interviews, due to him being a dull, derivative of himself asshole, but this was more about the video of it all. Anyway, he's an unbelievably stupid prick, being interviewed by a guy who says shit like "You can't MAKE jokes anymore, no one is allowed to be FUNNY". Enjoy!

Right but he's been rich for a really long time, so

Aaron

Oh right, prostitutes.

Simon Maraya

Is it the "default" to pay much, much younger women for sex? And to detest children and partnership? Or can Bill respect individual choices over biological imparitive when it suits him 🤔

Will Weldon

Honestly it might be enough for me just knowing I'd get to see a really, really big house

synthmage

Not to restate the premise or anything, but man...I really fucking hate Bill Maher.

VERY late comment, but re bill’s point about martyrdom, i learned something very interesting on the in our time podcast: one of the reasons early christianity was so popular and considered such a threat to the roman empire was specifically because of the idea of martyrdom. roman leaders were terrified and baffled by the idea that these weird freak cultists were cool with dying for their religion because they believed their suffering would end and they would get to go to heaven for their righteous behavior. usually, the empire would just make an example of a few people and the rest would fall in line. but because the then-jews who became christians were already living under roman persecution, the idea that their suffering was not only noble, but a ticket to an eternally beautiful paradise, meant that christian deaths were actually celebrated. that made the idea of christianity very durable and very contagious. christianity eventually took over the empire itself, even. bill might counter that christianity has moved away from that idea, but i would argue that it very much hasn’t. the idea that good christians get to leave this vale of tears and go to heaven remains core to every christian ideology of significant influence, and influences christians’ behavior a great deal. and many people still believe in martyrdom for the cause of advancing christian values. to the extent that things have changed in this regard, i would argue it’s largely because the overall standard of living in the heavily christian imperial core is now impossibly high, which makes the idea that this world is pure suffering and death for a cause is preferable much less convincing. but of course, that wealth comes on the back of majority muslim countries among others. all of which is to say that martyrdom is not at all an exclusively muslim thing, and even if it were, the only way to change that is for the imperial core to give up its extractove relationship with the rest of the world. you can’t oppress people out of martyrdom. a culture of martyrdom thrives in oppressive conditions. if you want to stop people from martyring themselves, DON’T GIVE THEM REASONS TO MARTYR THEMSELVES. this fucking moron.
