Due to time constraints, I watched the Whitney Cummings episode of Club Random over a series of days, posting updates each time I watched it. At one point, I became so overwhelmed with the feeling that this series has been so overlong and indulgent on my part that I sort of crack and just start losing my mind. I don't think I'll do another live reaction for a while, I just think this would've been sharper and better if I'd done the required prep for it. Anyway, here's all the audio in one file.

YOU

I hope there’s a project in your life to counter-balance the agony of this one.

M Night Shyamalan's turn to self-financing really puts the lie to all that whining about previously sucessful artists being "canceled". But we all know that Bill just wants Affirmative Action for rapists

A comedian walks into a therapist's office. Only, the therapist turns out to be an aging narcissist comic and the office a crummy hodge-podge basement. What follows instead of therapy: two emotionally immature, intimacy-phobic people reassure one another that they're both actually doing A-OK. In the words of Bill to Jane Fonda "I think I'm very normal." There's much to talk about -- and Will, you already took a big one for the team in your role as tour guide and entertaining interpreter -- but to pick just one thing (warning, potentially boring amateur armchair analysis incoming): Whitney's anecdote about losing all attraction to a man she was dating after he tripped on the sidewalk seemed a bit telling on herself. Her version is that he had rendered himself unattractive henceforth, and that her response to it was nothing she could control. Bill iirc enthuses that she's hit upon something that's so true. But is it? I'm guessing if she did dig a little deeper she might (speculative: might) find answers like "I have a hard time admitting my own perceived weaknesses and truly accepting myself as a person, so consequently I project outwards and despise the weakness I perceive in others," or "Things between myself and this person were starting to feel too close, so I tend to look for some kind of 'out' in order to escape any deepening intimacy with them." To be fair the anecdote may partially be intended as a bit of tossed-off comedy. It felt like a "Seinfeld" situation in the revolving door of their dating lives, where a minor foible is used as an excuse to drop someone. But in "Seinfeld" it was eventually made clear that the characters were not exactly people to emulate (Jason Alexander: "These are not your friends"), whereas for Whitney it seemed like she would prefer our conclusion to be that this guy simply, objectively became unappealing in that moment, and there was really nothing to do for it but cut ties. I don't know that she saw any potential issues on her side of the equation. Many of us have narcissistic traits to monitor and work on, myself very much included. But if a person's timeworn, reliable conclusion is that it's everyone around them that's letting them down, they're probably not working too hard on themselves. Maybe if you're making a fair living (or in Bill's case, much better than fair) at presenting a version of yourself to the public, doing the hard work of personal change isn't too incentivized.

Incredible work, i love it! you could do a full season series on one BM episode, and I'd be happily awaiting every ep

Lilly

seriously, i have a problem listening to way too many podcasts all day, but i prioritize IHBM every time. it's very charming. No offense to your newest musical drops, they are great, but i absolutely love your original segment jingles.

Lilly

i reply to myself because it's always good company

Cclear: watch He Walked by Night (1948)

I'm a new listener, and I'm obsessed. I love when Will gets genuinely outraged. I think I'm at the point where I am more outraged with Bill for being awful, unfunny and terrible at being an entertainer than for being a racist shitlib

GhostLobby

Big fan! Though I do feel conflicted that I laugh out loud when Will gets truly angry. I listen to episodes multiple times. The Ben Shaperio one - the best

Jackson_The_Geologist

A mezuzah has nothing to do with passover lol he's conflating it with painting lambs blood over the doorway. Among several other issues I have with what Bill says...

Magz

Will I love you and your podcast so much but I NEED you to rethink your stance on Al Franken

Doll House
