I fucked up scheduling and had to move the modern Real Time episode to next week, so the show returns to season 3 a week early with previous guest Eoin Higgins.

I audibly scowl, like I can hear my scalenes and sternlcleomastoid grind together, when he says “class wit”

Aaron

I’m sorry, there’s been a schedule?

Cclear: watch He Walked by Night (1948)

Eoin is right. Fetterman needs to dress properly. His outfits are awful and it's all part of his fake man of the people BS. He was a spoiled rich kid. He looks like shit. He sounds like shit. He's what, the most pro genocide senator now? Get him out of there

Will Weldon

I don't think it's a secret that it really bothers me

Mirkatte

So much ho-Maher-phobia in the Real Time episode being discussed. It's exhausting!

Mirkatte

I say it along with him in the intro, and then say, "NO YOU WEREN'T!!!"

Sam Blackman

(Me immediately upon seeing the thumbnail) YAOI?!?!

Sam Blackman

I tried to be the class wit once, in the goddamned 6th grade, and I got made fun of for it because it was fucking annoying! But honestly, I think the only way I have of understanding how Bill Maher exists as this nightmarish cultural phenomenon among neurodivergent North American folks is this; He must have sold his soul to satan in 6th grade (rhyme scheme no Minime), after he said something stupid and like got held upside down for his lunch money or some shit, and he thought “well only if they were forced to appreciate my wit! I know what I’ll do, tell jokes other people wrote on TV!! oooOOOOOH DEEEVIIL? Jokes aside thought it must’ve taken a colossal (even by showbiz standards) case of long term nepotism to even get him a goddamn audition, let alone to get his dumbass on the air. THIS SHIT IS NOOOOOOOOOOTTTTT FUUUUUNNNNYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sam Blackman

Idk if I’m accidentally ripping off something you’ve said before because honestly this could kinda apply to any episode of any show he’s ever been even remotely on screen for. It’s always the same smug fucking drivel and that’s entirely because this guy has mentally never even made it to junior high. Only way I can explain that to myself is with the theory that you stop growing as a person once you’ve been insulated from consequences by power for too long, which is a very very American-coded phenomenon… and honestly in my experience, those are the only types of people that actually have watched more than one segment of Bill Maher existing and don’t, Hate Bill Maher.

Sam Blackman

I know Bill probably thinks he’s like a B lister or something ridiculous like that, but in my book this “class wit” is a motherfuckin F- minus lister…

Raymond Baker

Hearing the lip smack in this 2005 episode will be like spending 2040 looking at old local news reports covering a flu like sickness going on in China in December 2019.

revolverbunny

Any chance we could get the name of the book Eoin mentioned? Sorry if I missed it, it sounds like a fun one!

Will Weldon

I completely forgot to do Homaherphobia

Will Weldon

I can confirm with him but I'm pretty sure it's The Year That Broke America by Andrew Rice

Mirkatte

Heh. As I was listening, I said, "Isn't this homaherphobia?" My husband wasn't awake yet, so I didn't have to explain that I was talking to a podcast again!

Great episode. Good to find out Cornel West's response to child porn is "don't we have higher priorities to deal with?" Wow. My galaxy brain take is I agree with BM that if ultra religious people truly believed in heaven, they shouldn't be afraid of dying & wouldn't try to prolong their lives. Hot take: I agree with Will re: a right winger who would prosecute the corrupt, but my version is someone totally anti-war, anti-genocide. If Marjorie Taylor Greene continues in her current direction, I'd be tempted. I disagree with her on just about everything else but this is the issue. Just to cut Iron Dome funding, all she got were 5 others out of over 400. She's already more anti-genocide than AOC and Bernie since AOC voted no on her amendment & Bernie won't call it genocide. She's more anti-war because she votes against Ukraine funding too. Well I'll keep voting 3rd party anyway

Sam Blackman

and a lot of them do! Hell not even just ultras either.

Yo Will and Eoin, as a northern-New Englander, we are in fact the furthest thing from normal. (Trigger warning, basically every fucked up thing you can think of an old guy who must’ve been hit in the head with a hammer too many times in the style of Bill Maher saying in a philosophical conversation with someone on the street (we literally had a small audience)) (abandon all hope, ye who scroll from here) (code: BLUEBEARD) This summer I got stopped while walking in town with a mask on to protect myself from wildfire smoke by a guy dressed in hippie clothes with a dyed blue beard and a shaved head except for two red sidelocks who proceeded to tell me I was an idiot for wearing a mask because germ theory is a lie, and that’s not even the least normal bit. I genuinely tried to see if I could reason with him into at least having a worldview by asking about his understanding of Judaism (I figured he was on some kind of solipsistic split-off from orthodoxy or some shit by the hair and (foreshadowing) neon yellow yarmulke) talking with him about my own… which he responded to by saying that he was “as Jewish as it gets” but that he didn’t believe in God and actually thinks that all (at least orthodox) Rabbis are all vampires because of the orthodox Bris ceremony. (I’m not fucking joking and I’ve actually heard this shit before multiple times from dumbass nazis wrestled with me in school)… this caused me to react like I’d just seen the guy get hit in the head with cannonball at the start of the movie “Glory” happen right before my eyes. (Oh but it gets worse, so much worse) But I am strong of heart with the ability to hold down my food very well After a far too long Socratic-type dialogue, this mf told me that: (1) Mahatma Gandi was literally perfect and his relationship with his kids (which he had given up saying he knew nothing about) was super wholesome, at which point I told him to shut the fuck up and tried to leave… (2, somehow still not the worst bit. (coda to the yarmulke)) All health issues are solvable by DRINKING ONE’S OWN URINE because “all problems are caused by toxicity and trauma and your kidneys have already filtered all the bad stuff out” WHICH IS LITERALLY THE OPPOSITE OF THE TRUTH!! (3 (finally.)) That there are LITERALLY NO SUCH THINGS AS FACTS, that nothing is more true than anything else and everything is just perceptions. At which point I pointed to a fucking lamppost and asked what it was, and he just went “well… it’s a post.”, so I asked him if I’d asked that question to a fully blind person who hadn’t touched it/didn’t echolocate it, and they told me honestly that they didn’t know, if the post would stop existing, TO WHICH HE SAID, AND I QUOTE; “…maybe”…

Sam Blackman

Fetterman pisses me off more than this guy though, by a long way tbh.

Sam Blackman

Best I can tell is in the early ‘90s when politically incorrect came out, so he was like fucking 43 lol

Shayda Haghgoo

I wonder if Will would get more participation in singing the new rules if he counted down but I also really like how he just goes into it without warning and the guests just have to jump in like it’s a quick few swings of double dutch

Hentron

This episode dusted off a long dormant neuron. I remember, I think, back in '07, Bill Maher said that abstinence pledges lead to kids having anal, and because of the internet kids have access to "weapons grade pornography" these days.

Wild look to have John Phillips as the 2nd most toxic man in your life
