We just ended up recording for too long for me to get this thing out with only like a six hour turnaround, so here is Woody Allen on Club Random, one day late, featuring actual Woody Allen fan (but not defender, don't worry) Andrea More. Obviously, given who the Club Random guest is, I simply must slap a content warning on here for talk of childhood sexual abuse; we also talked how strange it is that Bill Maher shows so little interest in, or ability to, talk about Woody Allen's work as a filmmaker considering what a huge fan he claims to be, the pathetic sympathy old men inherently pull out of you, and how one of these guys does a pretty good job (from a PR standpoint) of talking about being accused of sexual assault, while the other demonstrates pretty much the worst way to do it. It was a deeply strange conversation, one that I can't imagine Woody Allen's fans and true believers enjoyed very much, and neither one of us ends up particularly clear on why Bill Maher even wanted to have it.

the phrase “wettening of panties” has to be one of the most upsetting things I’ve ever read especially when used in relation to these two corpses

Will Weldon

You're describing, without hyperbole, 99% of his life

Ella Dawson

I haven't listened yet and I'm already stressed

mrg

@6:38 so sorry for you WIll

Cclear: watch He Walked by Night (1948)

💯 the Barbara Eden episode was far worse. She's a 94 year old legend. Instead of hearing more of her stories, he was disrespectful, cussed and was vulgar & sexual with her. I'd love an episode on that one. To me it's almost Bella Thorne level creepiness

Jim Allenspach

Jesus Christ, his take on the infinite monkeys with infinite typewriters thing is the exact same take that Karl Pilkington has

The journalist who worked on the R Kelly case is Jim DeRogatis, co-host of the Sound Opinions podcast. This episode was recorded in 2021 just after the verdict and includes a talk with the director of the Surviving R Kelly doc: https://soundopinions.org/show/827

What’s the name of eastwoods ex? That’s a wild story about Play Misty for me 😳

Will Weldon

I was wrong about Misty, it was way after that

hey_boo

lol so he was inspired his own movie to be shitty? Well played Eastwood.

Cclear: watch He Walked by Night (1948)

Clint Eastwood is a right wing freak, but he's consistently made better movies over the past few decades than Allen. Also, Eastwood's movies have a lot more variety. If I have to choose an asshole, I'll take Eastwood any day. Plus he talked to the chair

Salex

I love Andrea. Giggling hard at “I try not to watch things with Canadians in them”

Salex

Totally agree, even though I watched Blood Work and Absolute Power over the weekend, and they were just so, so bad. Some moments of fun there though

Cclear: watch He Walked by Night (1948)

Oh yeah. Like Allen, he's made some absolute crap as well. Cry Macho (2021) was so bad, I didn't finish it. I (wrongly) have a soft spot for Eastwood because he's one of the last surviving actors from the Golden Age of TV/Hollywood which is my favourite era

Bill is mangling a Norm MacDonald joke when he says women lie about their attraction to humor… From Norm’s book, Based on a True Story: “Women are attracted to funny men, it is often said. This is not true. It only appears this way because women laugh at everything a very handsome man says. So this gives the very handsome men the idea that they are funny.”

Aaron

This is the first time I’ve been apprehensive to listen to an episode and it’s all in the title

JohnG

this is the first time the guest made me turn off the episode. Andrea More, can you just relax a little bit and be a person instead of trying to force your comedy persona into every second of the podcast? There's obnoxious on purpose as a comedy persona on a stage, and that can be very funny, and then there's someone in a one-on-one setting that's doing obnoxious comedy persona to a single person, and that is just being obnoxious.

Aaron

Bill has never told a joke so funny a girl peed her pants!

Aaron

I can’t!! This man is sooo fucking gross!!

Kelli Rule

Omfg I don't care about Woody, but stop talking over Woody, Bill!!!

Fred J Walsh

strong disagree, the strongest I can muster anyway

Holly B

the pitbull snores were absolutely perfect.

My husband just called me the "house wit" as an homage to the "I Especially Hate Bill Maher" intro. He doesn't even listen to this podcast.

Cclear: watch He Walked by Night (1948)

She's actually my favourite guest. I find her hilarious. That said, there's another guest I find difficult to listen to, but I can't bring myself to criticize them. Humour is very subjective

Phasian's Workshop

Yeah, I had no problem with it either, personalities like humor are really finicky, no one's gonna like every guest (or person) right? I'm sure we've all had people we just avoided at parties or whatever :3! I'm always kind of impressed at people willing to be public personas at all (especially women). I imagine there's a certain level of energy it takes to do that, and that'll take different forms for different people. Energy is inherently a little in-one's-space - I guess I make little differentiation since to me, _everyone's_ energy feels like a lot XD But probably why people react so strongly when it's not to their taste

You can watch whatever you want but... Separating the art from the artist is an exercise in intellectual sophistry. Nothing is made in a vacuum and exploring how an artists bias and politics effect their art is a indispensable analytical tool. Even when it makes us feel icky because our faves are terrible people.

I remember as a kid I found the wordplay discussed around 1:40:00 really neat - the thing about where you have X and Y concepts and then swap them around. For the record, it's actually called chiasmus; just one of those little things that actually has a name.
