Hey, I really appreciate all the support on Patreon, HOWEVER if you want to support me (or really anybody) on there, don't use the God damned Apple app. I think they're bringing their weird massive fees back in because a court is letting? I don't know, just subscribe through a web browser. That's your best option anyway, because if you join through the app it doesn't automatically add you to the Discord. IT'S FUCKING INFURIATING.

Very early guest Emma Arnold OF THE HAWAII TRIP returns two years later to talk about modern day Maher. She had to spend time with him in 2017, she watched an episode of his show from 2003, and now she's watching another episode of his show from this very day. She also brings some helpful perspective as the mother of three large adult sons because one of the topics on the panel is men... why can't we as a culture help those poor guys out? Like, the loneliness epidemic: is it just for boys? Also, jokes that are technically better than usual but delivered with absolutely no confidence.

Please be aware that there's some echo on Emma's audio track because I'm a stupid piece of shit and literally went "I'm sure it's fine" and now it's making me nuts the entire edit. So, uh, I don't know... deal with it????? Also there's less editing on this episode than usual because I am absurdly behind on almost everything to do with the show.

For a guy who hates kids so much, he says "I kid" an awful lot. (Feel free to rewrite this one to make it better)

Hentron

This episode only reinforced my belief that Bill Maher is secretly angry/hurt/confused he was never invited to Epstein Island

Deb

Every time some weirdo says young people need to hang out in bars and get laid more, I feel like I've lost my mind. Like, the messaging I used to get in high school/college was all, "If you drink, you're gonna get assaulted and it'll be all your fault." Unless that's changed, how the hell are kids today supposed to square that circle?

Faib Dao

Actually the Havana syndrome is real (it was fake before it was real but now it’s apparently real). There’s some microwave weapon possibly developed by Russia but now widely available on the black market.

MemoryBonesObsidian

BM lives in a place that burns half the years and thinks anyone wearing a mask is doing so because they’re afraid of Covid

Jim Allenspach

I may or may not be acquainted with people who experienced the syndrome and had a slew of health problems because of it

Shawn R

Emma Arnold is an I Hate Bill Maher ICON. That Hawaii trip story is horrifying. Bill Maher is a grotesque monster!

Emily

I mask because I recognize COVID as a real threat to my brain, heart, lungs, muscles, immune system, earning potential & overall quality of life. I also know that a lot of COVID infections are contagious before they show symptoms (if they show at all) & I have a responsibility to prevent spreading it. Anyone with a body has a good enough reason to mask.

Chuck Grape

I can't get over the fact that Bill Maher hates fat people but vacations in Hawaii. I understand that obesity issues there are a result of colonialism and capitalism, but I don't think Bill gets that. I don't feel like I should be allowed to call someone this, but Bill Maher is a howley.

Barry Brownstein

Psh - these kids think they're so cool - I was lonely due waaaaay before they all started doing it.

William

In short, the whole episode amounted to seeing Bill Maher say, "Fuck the poor!" This stupid old man has no idea what is happening in the country, nor of the situation regarding the economy, the poor, and AI. His brain is so cooked from reading Bari Weiss and the Free Press that there’s no longer any point in airing his show. At this point, Bill Maher is a racist, senile, and perverted version of Joseph McCarthy. Who is this horrible man, and his horrible show, even for?!

Steph Vel

But if Bill Maher confronts this, he’ll have to admit he’s old and frail and no matter how many juice cleanses he does or how “clean” he eats, his health is not ultimately in his control and he is, in fact, going to die someday soon and that would probably make him even crazier than the lockdown did, plus he hates fat people too much to ever accept that being unhealthy (or fat, bc these are interchangeable to him) is not the result of personal moral failures

Steph Vel

Got so excited seeing two new episodes, and then again hearing AI would be discussed bc I hate AI as much as I hate bill maher. Then I had to ask myself when I became such a sick freak that these are the things I look forward to

Steph Vel

Also in addition to my list of things he claimed he did first, I’m creating a list of statements that make me question the quality of the Cornell history department

Aaron

Anyone remember the mad magazine parody “Errant bra on bitch”

Eli

agreed! COVID does so much damage to internal systems and a lot of cases are asymptomatic! plus masking is a comparably small action to prevent a lot of harm and fucking effective. in the very least wear a mask to spite bill maher

Eli

additionally if anyone is reading this and wants to start masking, check out your local mask bloc (https://maskbloc.org/) for free N95+ masks!!! any level of masking or clean air precautions are better than nothing

Eli

ok on the 3rd spaces thing. i am an ambulatory wheelchair user and although i don’t live in america i have a bunch of friends who do and it is so ridiculously hard to even leave the house as a wheelchair user!!! let alone buying a fucking wheelchair (aud custom $8k+) as well as the absolute destruction of public infrastructure?? like the reason why i am friends with so many disabled americans is that leaving the house is something that can take days of planning, phone calls to every place, checking websites, looking at photos of the paths, and being aware that you will most likely have to spend extra money, scott galloway is someone who has complete faith in public infrastructure and that everyone has equal access to public spaces

LiteraryNugg

Milkshake what now? I think I’m an old.

Kate Jay

"why won't the kids get off their phones and go outside" -> "why do parents let their kids wander around unattended" -> "shouldn't these kids be in school" -> "school is woke bs, most of these kids should give up on formal education and learn a trade" -> "why can't young people today use a semicolon correctly"

Kate Jay

wait what? last time i listened to something about it it was crickets + occupational stress. Is there a rebunk of the debunk?

Tyler

Boise State '09! Emma, if you read this, you should take the horror movie class my sister teaches. It's the envy of every professor in her department. Also, I had Scott Yenor as a professor and he fucking sucked! I once tried to make a progressive argument in class and he mocked me the rest of the semester by quoting John Lennon lyrics at me. Another time he took a student's banana bread and ate it while defending Milton Friedman's free market position. When the class was completed, he tried to claim he was a centrist 😆😆 This was all before he went full mask off sexist/racist/neocon. Just an insufferable dude

Abby R

LOVE Emma. Also a sting suggestion: for the lip smackdown, the first few words of The Final Countdown but “countdown” is replaced by will’s deadpan voice saying “smackdown.” Maybe there’s a copyright issues but is that anything?? Also Will, you can use the baby as a reason to not do things for at least another year. They are adorable tyrants 🫡

Betti Tristan

I think the line is “It’s what he would have wanted”

Henry Wise

It was a comic about a duck who becomes internet famous (for drinking milkshakes) only for an old racist reddit post of his to lead to him getting canceled. It was a very popular comic on twitter/social media in general around 2017-2018 that led to people referring to that scenario (niche random thing becomes internet famous, found to be problematic, then cancelled) as someone or something being "milkshake ducked."

Cécile Choplin

Incredible episode, Emma is a fantastic guest!

Mark Kreitz

Great guest!! Very good conversations

LiteraryNugg

Aha! Thanks for that. I don’t enjoy missing the joke heheh
