You know, sometimes you have your podcast where you make fun of a guy you hate, which means experiencing a lot of that person you hate, and you're sure this has absolutely poisoned your brain with irony beyond the scope of what any other person's brain could handle, and then you have two professionally online Zoomers on the show and realize you actually know nothing of irony poisoning.

Wow, look at that, I put a little work into the episode description this week! Pretty impressive, right? Anyway, this week Spencer Barrows and Liv Agar joined the podcast, and it took every bit of strength in my 41 year old body to not constantly ask them "hey, this isn't cringe what I'm doing, right? I'm not being CHEUGY????" They make the judgement free question zone look absolutely pathetic, and then we talk about Real Time season 24, episode 30, which is the rare modern Real Time episode where Bill Maher was NOT the worst person on the panel. Does that mean he was well behaved, perhaps even normal? Of course not, don't be a damned fool.

My now retired (former teacher) French boomer mother who used to be a solid lib, has completely lost her mind to this French right wing news channel CNews, which is now on all day and has turned her into a frothing at the mouth white supremacist. It's so bad that we can barely speak to each other anymore and I can confirm the nonstop talking point of the Islam/leftist alliance on that channel. They are so rabid by the way on that channel, they make fox news look tame. I've had the misfortune on a 2 week vacation in France to hearing it and I could not believe the violence and nonstop propaganda and incitement 24/7.

Are you currently living in the US Cécile? I'm curious because I studied abroad in Nantes many years ago. I saw the anti-muslim attitude in older people, so this doesn't surprise me. I remember seeing the rise of the FN in the early 2000s. It was quite scary even at that time!

No I've visited the US but never lived there. I was born to a French mother and Polish father in Germany in 1984 and lived in Germany until 2007 when I first moved to Ireland and now I'm in Dublin. The thing is my French grandma and Grandpa who are dead now, but who I was very close to, used to be right wing and we always assumed my grandfather probably voted for the FN in the 90s. And the funny thing is my mother used to be at odds with them about politics because she was a lefty at the time. She was born in 1949 and actively participated in the student protests in France in May 1968 which apparently caused my grandfather such distress that he had to be hospitalized! But since the islamist attacks on Paris in 2015, first with Charlie Hebdo and then the mass killings in November of the same year, my mother slowly started to radicalize against Muslims and consuming right wing type of media. And now she's completely gone to this extreme right wing news channel CNews. Look it up on Wikipedia - it is insane! Such stuff was not around when my grandparents were still alive, they were right wing and racists but they were still watching the regular 8 o'clock news on TF1 and that's it. Not being fed hate propaganda 24/7 like my mother is now. This is a whole different caliber of frothing at the mouth hate filled white supremacist they turned her into and frankly heartbreaking. I can barely speak to her, let alone spend any time with her anymore.
