Skye has always been important to Strawberry. There’s just something about the bond between mother and daughter…..especially when said mother got unexpectedly knocked up by a nutcase, then proceeded to give birth to a litter of four male puppies in a row (well, as far as Strawberry knew at the time. Soup didn’t dispute this assumption until they were old enough to talk, and Summer didn’t transition until her late teens). Four healthy puppies…and then, at end, one last baby. The runt of the litter, the tiniest and youngest…a little girl. Strawberry’s daughter, Skye. Now Strawberry loves all her kids equally, but Skye is, and forever will be, her baby. Even when everything goes to hell and she forgets how to say it out loud.

Strawberry did attempt to raise Skye to be a prim and proper young lady, but she kinda half-assed it because Strawberry is not a “proper lady” herself. Strawberry likes tv wrestling and drinking beer on her porch and polishing her favorite rifle. On principle, Strawberry does not say excuse me after belching. She met Saint at an arm-wrestling competition in the 90s, whereupon she broke his arm. She and Saint may or may not solve disputes through impromptu wrasslin’ matches, or by betting on their children’s little league games (the bet terms are agreed upon by spitting into their palms, then shaking hands). Strawberry can gut a catfish and pitch a softball and load a gun and knit a sweater, and she’s surprised, but not unhappy, that Skye ends up being a lot like her, instead of a perfect puppy princess.

here’s a peek into what’s goin on in babie Skye’s noggin right now: mommy mommie mommie gib attention yay mommy gib attention mommie gib

The mother-daughter bond is complicated and intense and very special. I appreciate Skye having ups and downs with her mom, and struggling to communicate, but I think the love between them is still apparent. I love them both!!!

Skye looks so sweet here omg 🥺 I just wanna pick her up!! Out of curiosity what was strawberry’s reaction to summer transitioning? Did she try that perfect puppy princess stuff with her or did she just give up by that point lol. Was she excited to have another daughter?

Honestly a great deal, it’s always fun to have a fair share of prissiness, and tomboy experiences. Just had an arm farting competition with my brother while wearing a spa facial mask that makes me feel like a runway model. And awwwww look at that lil fluffball!

Goddd,,, Strawberry reminds me so much of my own mom. My relationship with her is also complicated and a bit strained for a few different reasons, so I am hardcore relating to Skye these past few drawings

Nope, no princess stuff with Summer, though Strawberry would've been supportive if Summer WANTED to be a girly-girl. Strawberry definitely held some gendered beliefs when Skye was born, and she did buy matching mother-daughter dresses for herself and baby Skye to take pictures in, and she did set out with the belief that Skye was the "princess" of the pack, and that all her brothers would be her "protectors". She had a very fairytale idea of what raising a daughter would be like. But all that was challenged when her pups grew from babies into actual kids. It was pretty clear Skye didn't want to be a "princess", she wanted to be KING, ordering all the other pups around, running around and rolling down hills in tires and catching bugs and learning to wrestle alongside her dad and siblings. Furthermore, Soup makes it clear fairly early that they are not a boy, but also not a girl, which prompts Strawberry to read up on gender identity, particularly in children. To encourage Soup to be themself, she and Saint have a free-for-all home fashion pageant with the kids, dressing up however they like, and while it's mostly just a fun day for the pups, it's a learning experience for the parents, because Strawberry learns she kinda likes presenting butch, while Saint learns skirts are comfy as hell and he looks damned good in eyeliner. Soup chooses their name around this time (Soup) and begins to experiment with different pronouns and clothing. Pawberry Acres was always a very queer-friendly space, Saint doesn't make it a secret that he's bisexual, nor does Strawberry hide that she had a girlfriend or two before she got married. Summer is...mostly comfortable in her own fur growing up. She felt like a boy, mostly, or at least very confortable presenting masculine. She liked looking in the mirror and seeing her scruffy face and broad shoulders and growing muscles. But something just feels a bit off when Strawberry calls her "son", or her siblings call her "brother". She LOVES the ladies, but she doesn't feel like a straight man...in fact she feels an odd kinship with her lesbian pals. She talks to her siblings about this, but none of them know exactly what her feelings mean...well, save for Soup, who tells Summer that there's no harm in a little gender experimentation, that she should keep exploring until she figures out what her feelings mean. Summer decides to try out she/her pronouns, but they just feel ridiculous. Femininity just feels awkward when she tries it, she wouldn't feel like herself in girly outfits, or making her voice higher-pitched, or trying to be cute, delicate and demure, or taking up less space. Frustrated, she brings all this up to Strawberry. Although Strawberry's heart has been long-hardened by grief at this point, she has always held a soft spot for Summer, her loudest and brashest "son" who has always needed help working out his big feelings- it reminds Strawberry of herself. Summer feels there's no point calling herself a girl if she's not actually girly- to which Strawberry snaps, "Do you see me flutterin' around in a ballgown and sparkly makeup? There ain't no law sayin' there's only one way to be a woman, now go take out the trash." Somehow, Summer had kinda forgotten that moms are girls. Huh. So she begins her transition- slowly at first, then full steam ahead, max confidence, because hot damn does she make an awesome girl. Secretly, it makes her happy that she grows to resemble her mom. Strawberry is indeed delighted to have another daughter, but like everything else she sucks at saying that out loud, so she mostly expresses her pride in the form of comparing Skye to Summer, "Why can't you be more like your big sister?", "Hmph, Summer never had to leave home to 'go make a difference in the world' ", "Skye all that city-livin' has you outta shape, can't even tote a dozen berry crates like your sister!" Skye kinda gets the feeling that Summer is the favorite daughter, and of course since Summer feels adequately supported by Strawberry, she doesn't agree with Skye's "why doesn't Mom ever say she loves us" bellyaching. The sisters have a bit of a rivalry going on that might’ve become genuine resentment, if Summer's smarmy jock ass wasn't just so damn likeable. Skye really does like having a big sister to annoy, and for all her smugness, Summer is always there for Skye, so they get along quite well. Strawberry is proud that her girls are close, and very proud indeed she somehow ended up with TWO amazing daughters.
