working on a big toffee sketch dump, here’s a sneak peek. ;3 the dialogue is fake, merry and toffee were actually pretty close when toffee was small. He was Merry’s firstborn and only son, and Merry’s church had yet to become a megachurch, so life was still pretty small and simple…..so Merry made sure to make time to chat with his best boy every night before bed.

IF ONLY HE COULD HAVE STAYED THIS KIND

Around what age was Toffee when Merry realized he wasn't shaping out to be the way he wanted? Was Topher still young enough that Merry tried to turn to him instead of Toffee?

NOOOOOO (extremely excited to see the full post and be in deep emotional pain and understand them more)

Probably somewhere between the ages of 15-17. Toffee has always been very sensitive, expressive, and sweet, which was expected and cute to see in a child, but not much desired in a young man. At least, not the kind of young man Merry wanted Toffee to be. Still sleeping with a stuffed animal? Enjoying sewing with mom? Gossiping with a female best friend? Crying over hurt feelings? No no no, unacceptable. Toffee also struggled with very typical teen feelings of anxiety and self-doubt, which Merry viewed as weakness. At first Merry becomes stern and scolding and tries to forcibly shape Toffee into a real man, but quickly grows frustrated, and what’s worse, Eleanor is always around to shield Toffee, letting her hide behind her skirt like the sissy he is. Damn, Merry KNEW he was too soft on the boy growing up, knew he shouldn’t have let Ellie coddle him so much- now look what’s happened! >:( Fortunately (sorta), right as Toffee enters adulthood, Merry ditches the family for Maple. He does still try to mold Toffee into a man, but it’s half-hearted and sporadic now, he’s too busy with his new family, and Toffee feels like a lost cause at this point. His interactions with Toffee fade into avoidance occasionally peppered by criticism. And to answer your question, no, Merry would’ve never turned to Topher. Not just because Topher is, in Merry’s eyes, a girl (and thus not capable of being a true heir), but also because, as we’ll see, he and Topher reallyyyyy don’t get along.

Man money and power really do change a person (I mean I’m sure Merry had his shitty opinions before, it’s just now he has validation and a platform)

I'm so used to Merry's bald ass head that I'm disturbed by him with a full head of hair and desire to shave it immediately

I really do love seeing your WIPs! It's cool to get a behind-the-scenes look of what's going on. Also, Toffee is one of my favourite characters and I hope to maybe see what his church looks like in the future. I bet it's awesome!

Toffee, visiting elderly Merry on his sick bed: *sigh* Everyone told me not to come, but I'm a fool I suppose. Look, dad, I know we don't get along, and I'll never be the man you want me to be. I was sorry for that once, but I'm not anymore. I never will be again. But I wanted to tell you that even though you are cruel and full of hate, and that you tried your best to ruin me, and Topher, and Honey-!....well. In spite of all of that....I forgive you, Pop. And...*tearing up*...I love you, Pop. I still do. Merry:....struggles to sit up* Merry: *feebly tugs down his oxygen mask* Merry: *grasps at Toffee's hand* Merry, in a weak croak: pretty fruity son ngl

The breed of dog he is kind of makes him look older regardless of his age. What breed is he again? And despite how awful Merry is, this drawing of him and Toffee is very sweet. I only wish it was under better circumstances.
