quick concept art of my best boy in his prime. In the late 1970s, Merry Meadowsweet left his childhood trailer park and set out to find his fortune.

Oh noooooooo. Lop you’re gonna make people want to fuck the priest.

lopoddity

Topher inherits Merry’s Vibe ✨, Toffee inherits Merry’s love of 70s fashion

mirarevias

Whew-WEE the pants 😤 Okay sir maybe I understand the appeal a little, back then at least I hope he learned that being an asshole made him bald (EDIT: for clarification since it is not immediately obvious, this a tongue and cheek (but in bad taste) joke. I accept that wholeheartedly and intend no genuine meaning behind it whatsoever. It is a jab at Merry because he is the exact kind of person who would make a judgement like this, and it is in turn a judgement that would upset him. I do not (and never would!) actually believe he is bald because he is a bad man. I am being hyperbolic.)

Emily Lemur

Merry seems to have been another victim of the system

Dean

meow. im sorry i meant meow. i meant um. meow. um

Sorceringing

GOD i love the cycle of generational suffering!! Toffee looks so much like himmmmm aaauughhh

TheHaywaiianHorse

Oh shit...ok..I see it 👁👁. Take me back to church, Father.

pookaWOODS

OOOMMMMGGGGG Toffee looks just like him! That's crazy!

lopoddity

Gentle correction: Merry is not a priest, he’s a pastor. ;3 And yeah, that was the goal. >:3 I wanted y’all to see exactly why Eleanor went for this stupid dog man

Hazelskyes

What luscious locks! 😳

Imogen

BRING ME THE DISCO KING

Morghann Patterson

Wait fuck hold on completely unrelated If there’s Dog Church Is there then Dog Mormons

lopoddity

Nah, balding is a normal process, and also just an easy visual shorthand to show that a character is old. That’s why Merry is bald. It will happen to Toffee too someday, you can see Toffee’s got less fluff on his head in present day FB (in his 40s) than he did in his 20s. This said, it doesn’t mean Merry doesn’t bitterly miss his youthful luscious locks

mirarevias

Please God I hope so 😭

mirarevias

That's true! The comment was more me making a jab at Merry's expense (though to be fair that would be at the expense of anyone balding who was Not Nice I suppose 😅). And I hadn't even noticed that with Toffee! But I imagine he at least would ease into older age with grace and do what he can with what remains of his hairline to great appeal. I have faith in him!

lopoddity

Specific irl religions do not exist in FB, though I do draw on elements from real world religions and mash em up into the weird furry denominations of FB. Merry’s religion is inspired by evangelism and southern baptism. Perry (and Liv) are furry-Jewish (….Mewish?). Lune, Victoria, and the deer cult formally drew on Mormon and Amish elements, but have since been given Apocalypticist qualities.

Morghann Patterson

Like I’m Jewish and I love seeing how people figure out how to Fantasy it up the way they do Christians

lopoddity

Yes, and that is why Merry is so tough on Toffee. He sees a lot of himself in his eldest son and he does NOT like it

MiyaLaFlorDorada

Ok but can wee talk how this type of vintage men fashion was so risky? flashy?...slutty? I don't know what words to use, BUT my point still stand. It a little tragic see this young dog and then his future self, he literally made his own hell, what would young Merry think of seeing all present time mess? Even so I must say I love his clothes, very sparkly, so much confidence, very pretty dude. Like I remember seeing my dad pictures in his 20s and I was like: Oooohh so that's why people thought you were gay daddy 🤣 Context my dad was always a quiet very polite soft spoken introvert soul, he was an excellent cook, could do all house shores, and have a very pastel sence of fashion (a lot of shades of pink, blue and yellow mix with tight jeans) and since he wasn't a misogynists womanizer like many of that time ( and that he actually treated woman with respect, as people without wanting something) many people were SO sure ladies weren't his taste, kinda sad actually, he was an oddity, which was kinda hypocrite from other men, they dress just as colorful but because they act macho-like and were sexist jerk nobody told them shit. But I think that the fact that he was a pretty boy with good prospects, that "oh any parent would be so proud of having him as their child" and that many girls/families in his neighborhood wanted him as their husband/son in law didn't help with his male friendships 😅

lopoddity

Merry is a victim of a different system. His early life was actually pretty lacking in religion. Instead it was characterized by poverty, growing up hungry and neglected under the wrathful, unpredictable eye of his alcoholic father. This is part of why he’s so driven in pursuing wealth- Merry promised that HIS children wouldn’t grow up in squalor like he did.

mailebird

Huh, was wondering how the ol' wind bag landed a total dime like Eleanor.

lopoddity

By dancing her socks off and promising her the world

lopoddity

Mal, flipping through an old photo album: Damn, Toph, your dad looks gnc af Topher: YOU’RE INSANE

Rumpeltyltskyn

Mormons + apocalypse = Jehovah’s Witnesses (half joking as an exJW)

Sorceringing

Does Merry think he's become like his own father or does he not think about that at all with regards to how he treats Toffee and instead pushes it way way down and thinks he can get rid of the parts he hates about himself by getting rid of them within his son? thinking about Merry being horrible to Toffee but then rationalising it by thinking "Well at least I didn't disown him like my own father" (meanwhile he's completely emotionally checked out and has all but physically disowned Toff)

D

OH NO HE’S HOT

Kenzie Leong

Me inching in with the doggy 10-blade clipper: Hang on hold still you got a little... on your chest, just lemme... okay got it.

Gleeman and Artist

Damn no wonder Eleanor went after Merry haha. I'm curious how Merry ended up being a pastor. Is that something he always wanted to do or did he have different plans for his life?

Corinne Stephenson

He needs to be evicted from the Pink Pony Club THIS INSTANT

Angsty Ram

Y’know what? I can see where Eleanor was coming from cause if this mf came strutting over to me, with that southern accent, asking me to dance I think I’d have given up like twenty years of my life I wonder how much he lost himself over the years, he comes across like he’d have a MASSIVE record collection maybe he’d wanted to have give to his kids

marsh_beast

I had assumed Meadowsweet kids got their pretty boy (gender neutral) swag and stylin’ hair from their respective mothers, but it looks like I was WRONG. Does this mean Toffee and/or Topher might look like their old man someday?

Buttermaster

He’s ready for brat summer

lopoddity

Merry did not grow up in a religious home, but the local church did provide a community food pantry and toys around the holidays, which kid Merry desperately appreciated. He attends a church service on a whim as a young adult and is blown away by the music and warmth and community it offers. He immediately sets his mind to becoming a pastor so he can offer these things to people who need them. And also because becoming a church leader promises a lot of control and unquestionable authority, and to Merry, due to his shitty upbringing, there is no greater form of love than control.

lopoddity

Merry HATES his father and would probably become quite explosive if anybody ever compared him to his dad. His father was a bitter and sadistic man, seeming to delight in finding excuses to humiliate and punish his son. Merry ran away from home a lot as a kid. As an adult, Merry walks with a permanent limp and will later require a cane, and this is because of a particularly brutal assault by his father when he was a teenager, a drunken retaliation for Merry "mouthing off". So to Merry, there can be no comparison between him and his dad. Merry is a perfect gentleman to Eleanor, and a present and supportive father to his two children. He works himself to the bone to give them everything he never had. A happy home with lots of books and toys, parents that love each other, picnics and movies and library trips, piano lessons for Toffee, violin lessons for Topher, holiday cards and hugs and plenty of playtime. Life was idyllic for the Meadowsweets. And then Merry's local little church started growing.

Sorceringing

omgggggggggggg 😭😭😭 I adore your world building so much. this is so sad, hes a bad person but on the total opposite end of his dad it seems, overcorrection to the max

lopoddity

Later on in Merry's life, when he's old and his children have long outgrown him, he's going to fall very ill and come very close to death. And in those moments, when he still cannot bear the painful vulnerability required to make amends with his children, he will lie in his hospital bed and think about how despite everything, he ended up alone and unloved, just like his father did. And Merry will cry.

Sorceringing

🫠😭MAN!!! (my favourite dynamic, Congrats! You All Paths Lead To Rome'd Yourself! You Just Took A Different Path)

lopoddity

What are you talking about? They already look like their old man. ;3 Toffee especially snickers at Topher whenever he has to hold up his phone and squint to read it (and for a second becomes the spitting image of their father), while Topher makes fun of Toffee for unthinkingly using Merry's silly kid-friendly swears ("oh, dagnabbit", ) and how Toffee's speech pattern gets significantly more southern (and thus significantly more Merry-like) when he's annoyed. Toffee is normally very gentle and soft-spoken, but when he's mad (or excited) he sounds EXACTLY like Merry.

Ami

i was not expecting the name "Merry Meadowsweet" to follow after "best boy."

Lammergayier

I will NOT get gender envy from 70s Merry I will NOT get gender envy from 70s Merry I will NOT get gender envy from 70s Merry I will NOT-

lopoddity

>:3 aaaaand he had GAME. Eleanor was a fierce untamed wild horse disco queen and he got her to marry him in like a year

Lammergayier

Followup question bc I read the other comments and saw Merry's father mentioned. Did Topher and Toffee ever meet their grandpa (and grandma if she's in the picture?) Or did Merry keep them Far away from him?

lopoddity

Nope. Merry's dad kicked him out when he was grown, Merry promptly split town and never looked back. Merry's mom snuck away in the middle of the night night when Merry was 3 or 4, he has little memory of her. He tried looking her up when he became an adult, but she is either dead, missing, or doesn't want to be found.

ummhallelujah

I think it was mentioned once that Merry wanted all his kids to play an instrument. Is this because he's a music lover, or was it just because he thought it made them more sophisticated?

owlcoholik

Merry’s dad kicked him out for his homo appearing tendencies yet when Merry’s kids become engage in actual homo tendencies he doesn’t kick them out and they STILL hate him..can’t win in this modern society 😔

Caleb White

It’s too late, the gender envy is already upon thee *totally feeling the gender envy too*

lopoddity

Both! Merry’s a big music fan and has always liked the idea of his family all being famous musicians. He’s a good singer on his own, but is completely outclassed by Eleanor, whose powerful gospel numbers are semi-responsible for drawing so many members to his church. With his own kids, Merry partly wanted them to have a skill he could show off, and partly wanted to give them the creative outlet he never had. He’s pretty annoyed when Toffee wishes to sing choir instead of play piano (choir is cute for a boy, but not very manly or dignified for an adult to do, in Merry’s mind) and feels completely disrespected when Topher starts skipping violin lessons to learn guitar instead.

ummhallelujah

Ah, so I see his kids inherited his love of music but the ways in which they did it weren't good enough for him.

CardstockBroth

Maple got the worst version of this man

lopoddity

Exactly! It's all because of that damn "woke"! >:( Merry's dad once gave him a black eye for catching him looking too long at a pair of platform boots, but Toffee is a full-blown homosexual and Merry is literally so good and tolerant of it?? He doesn't disown his son or hit him or anything??? He goes urgh OKAY this is CLEARLY because i haven't been a present enough father figure so here is a free Don to teach you how to be manly and tough and knock off the queer act. Merry giftwraps Toffee the best support he can conceive of, all for Toffee to remain a total embarrassment. He can't win with any of his kids!! Why did all THREE of them turn out so deviant and disrespectful of Merry's wishes?? He's never so much as raised his voice at them! He gave them everything he never had! >:(

lopoddity

She really did. Born too late for pot-smoking make love not war slutty-dressing flower-picking disco-dancing Merry, born just in time for cranky Matlock-watching Old Country Buffet-eating arthritis-having Merry

Angsty Ram

… and born too early for six foot under Merry

Ventia

He gives me the feels of "I fell I would be that cool if I did transition" vibes XD Green with envy over here too.

lopoddity

STOP BEING MEAN TO MY BOY 😡 Merry doesn't actually die for a while. I'm undecided on how it'll be, at first I wanted him to survive a devastating illness, only to then die abruptly in tragically mundane kinda way, no fanfare, no struggle. But now I'm wondering if I'm entirely committed to Merry dying alone and miserable. A full redemption is not very reasonable, buuuut I don't think it's impossible that Merry couldn't manage to partly mend a few broken bonds with the ticking clock of death being his key motivator. Idk, I remain undecided in how I'm going to murder this silly cocker spaniel man

PrincessMuffinArt

s..slutty..men., my weakness Also WOW Toffee looks JUST like Young Merry!

gamigami

he should survive cancer and on the way back home from being cleared of it he gets in a car accident with a peanut truck and then dies from an allergic reaction to the peanuts

Lammergayier

🫵 BOJACK HORSEMAN MENTIONED

knickknacks

YOU CANNOT DO THIS TO ME. FUCK

lopoddity

lol, did u think he was born old and crotchety XD

Ventia

He was so good looking while he was younger, I wonder if his all around awful behavior and bitterness played whit how badly he aged :/ We can sometimes see how moods and attitude affects a face with time, or all around degree of stress on the body. Makes me wonder if it played here as well.

lopoddity

It's more that Merry is stressed. Growing and managing a giant church takes a ton of work, and on top of that he had to support both his first family with Eleanor, then his second with Maple. Merry has an unhealthy workhorse mindset combined with absolutely relentless ambition (he is incable of ever feeling satisfied). Guy hasn't had a day off in...decades. Not since Toffee and Topher were little kids. Which very much factored into how roughly he aged, and is also why he's so damn bitter and cranky in his old age. Merry is tired, but too stubborn to admit he needs rest. He's tired and sleep-deprived and his joints constantly ache and he's ALWAYS busy. He's too busy to even realize how completely miserable he really is.

Solohammer

Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time

Bigsmile

Lol, get wrecked nerd, I love the villains being miserable in success

lopoddity

It's okay, really. No matter how tired or melancholy Merry feels, sometimes Honey will bring him a lunch to share together in his office, and he'll look at her big sweet innocent eyes and think maybe it was all worth it. Sure hope she doesn't get radicalized by her wretched queer brothers and the woke agenda...
