Marine mammals are really not the most common animals living inland, so Cass has some questions for this rando

Cass is in their early 20s here and is a college student. Don is in his early 60s and still working under Merry as a counselor at Goldenrod Church. Seems like ol' Merry's tasked him with saving the souls of today's wayward, wicked youth. Fortunately, it seems Cass prefers their soul as is, full of sin, sloth, and dollar slushies.

I worked on a college campus once and every now and then there'd be this old guy with a giant bible made of (I'm pretty sure) painted plywood, and another piece of plywood covered in baby dolls slathered in red paint. Reminded me of Eddie Izzard's "babies on spikes" bit. I'm assuming Dom's not doing anything that extreme, but I suspect most of the passing college students hold him in about as high esteem as the students at my college held Giant Bible Baby Board Guy.

Gleeman and Artist

Ah yes, the best kind of soul. One full of sin and dollar slushies.

Man, seeing don here just reminds me that the conservative religious people in the slow as molasses city I live in have been annoying this month (maybe because easter). Well, they’re always annoying. There was someone near my old job who would stand in the parking lot doing similar things that don was doing but he would announce it in a megaphone.

pookaWOODS

Sin, sloth, and dollar slushies is what life is all about.

Lammergayier

Oh Lord the college flashbacks this gave me. We had this one specific preacher who we'd just call the "[Insert building name here] Preacher" bc he'd stand outside of the same building every day and just shout at the students about how they'd be going to hell if they didn't repent for their sins 😭

DorkRaptor

I love this current style, especially how you rendered Don. Looks really good!

FloweryFruitFangs

those two infamous text messages: “GET A JOB” “STAY AWAY FROM HER” Are blaring in my head right now

shield

oh no you made him even hotter

Alight

Huh! A duo I never realized I wanted to see, but which I am now morbidly curious about.

And it’s always with the damn rolly carts! Do they just hand them out to these Bible peddlers? Is there a special website churches get them from I knew an old dude that was retired and spent EVERY DAY walking 5 miles one way to stand outside the Walmart with his little rolly cart of sin and damnation and yell and preach for hours about the end of days and how we will all burn. THIS is how you chose to spend your golden years? Get a hobby. Take your rolly cart and clean up the highway or something. Take up needlepoint. Volunteer at a shelter and actually do gods work. Stop yelling at the hillbillies at Walmart we’re all too stoned to pay attention to you anyways

Robo87

Also pilot twist….he’s actually their uncle

Jewell H

sin, sloth, and $1 slushies would make a great tattoo

lopoddity

Thanks! I'm trying out an updated ergonomic drawing setup to make art easier with chronic pain. I'm using my laptop now instead of my PC, so I lost most of my old digital art brushes and had to adapt to new ones. I think it doesn't look too shabby! :3

lopoddity

My brother is a bible-pusher that likes going to churches of other denominations to argue with them, and he's got a huge stack of those fake hundred dollar tips (that are really christian pamphlets) to leave at restaurants. I think maybe it's about getting to feel persecuted and ignored by the wicked sinful world (and also self-righteously superior to all the hell-bound heathens) than it is about actually spreading biblical values and doing good 🤷‍♂️

lopoddity

"Pssh, not all seals know each other, kid......hey WAIT A MINUTE, ain't you my sister Celia's pup???"

Ren

Was Don born on the surface or did his family move there? Or did he seek it out himself? Does Cas ever think about going back to the ocean? Or she completely comfortable on land? I know they meet up with their mom sometimes. How different is sea culture from land culture? I'd love to explore more of the ocean communities in this universe

moon!

i believe this too. same with jehovah's witnesses. it's deeply sinister

FloweryFruitFangs

Commenting again but I am a bit gobsmacked at how hypocritical Don is being here. He made a little joke implying that he’s had enough casual sex with various people that there’s a real possibility he could have an unknown biological kid walking around somewhere. In the same drawing where he’s ALSO pushing Merry’s religion that treats sex as a sacred act that should only happen after marriage and values purity and chaste.

SpaceSiren

Don could've been a happy, loving housewife to Eva and is instead Merry's second depressed wife (Alexa, Play Good Luck, Babe)

Robo87

Ooooh….oh so holy Don having (quite the younger sister) accidentally get pregnant out of wedlock. I wonder….do you think she showed up at her distant older brother’s house, terrified and homeless after their parents booted her out, begging for a place to stay until she figured things out? Did Don open his home to the troubled youth and her newborn….or drop her off at the nearest homeless shelter and patted himself on the back for it? Hmmm…. Ok I know them being siblings isn’t canon but now I’m fascinated by them idea of Dom’s parents having an “oops” baby quite late in life. Heck, they’ve been pressuring Dom to settle down and give them some grandpups. THEY weren’t supposed to be parents again, and quite frankly are exhausted by the time Celia is a preteen…and maybe they just sort of let her run wild as long as she didn’t do anything that got her in trouble. Don is also largely uninterested in his much younger baby sister and has probably only had like 4 awkward conversations with her before the pregnancy scandal…. (Also, will Cass become spotted as they get older? I keep meaning to ask and I forget lol )

I saw that celia joke and that's so funny it's enough to tempt fate. We will wake up one day to Lopoddity wips of the expanded Summer Tree where Don's there via sticky note. Next story art about Don and Célia at Fuzzgiving where Biscuit invited Honey's family over and all Furry Hell breaks loose

lopoddity

Ooooh, interesting. I think more likely, if they are related, Don would be Cass' great uncle. His sibling had a kid (Celia) who became a teen mom and gave Cass up for adoption. Also nope, Cass stays small, white, and fluffy forever- just another way she gets to feel out of place, even among her own species (harp seals shed their juvenile white fur for sleek spotted waterproof ones).

DorkRaptor

It looks great! A good drawing setup is everything. Glad you could find something that works better for you :)

Cass- Cass is the Fuzzbutt equivalent of Mumble from Happy Feet…. (More seriously, I assume her retaining a small stature and juvenile appearance would be seen in-universe as a ‘failure to thrive’ situation, which would then probably be blamed on too much of the wrong kind of diet during development (dogs and seals are very different creatures), environmental stress (a sea creature on land probably tends towards all kinds of aches and pains from how differently she must move while on land, and for such long periods of time), as well as not being raised towards certain milestones (how old was she when she learned to swim? How often did she get to do it? What about holding her breath? Hearing on land versus hearing underwater, etcetera). … I’m now imagining a crossover featuring Cass and Talita from Runaway to the Stars, it seems there is some potential for thematic similarities. (Note: I do imagine that a wealthy, medically aware person like Biscuit would’ve given Cass the best she knew, but there’s never been a mention of there being accommodations made to her house for her ‘mermaid’ daughter, only the vest and skate board, sooooooooooo-)

Alight

That.. is interesting. (Also reminded me of the people who would come to the Walmart I used to work at and just go register to register preaching, because they knew we had to stand there listening. Also that one lady who walked in, started screaming about the Christian god and endtimes, then marched back out. She was applauded.)

Don's family is originally from what they'd call the "old country", a floating ice colony in Antarctica, but Don himself was born and raised in Zoo Jersey...though he of course pretends to be from Zoo York. Don's been a landlubber all his life, though he is an excellent swimmer and relished growing up in a coastal city. I'm still brainstorming on the oceanic parts of FB, but I'm thinking sea civilization is a lot more....well, "undeveloped" is not quite the right word. Maybe...natural, simple. The ocean is MASSIVE, thus most species are culturally nomadic, and think it quite odd that land-dwellers so often remain in one location all their life. There are a scattering of cities beneath the sea, consisting of elaborate twisting spires of coral and illuminated by bioluminescent lights, quite unlike anything on land. Oceanic species drift through these cities and settlements to trade, barter, buy, and of course socialize- before continuing on in their journey through the currents. Thousands of different languages and dialects exist under the sea. The general culture is much slower and calmer than life above, particularly as sea creatures are far less invested in the concept of ownership (nothing is permanent in the ever-moving ocean) and pursuit of wealth as land creatures. Societies are loose and always evolving to fill the needs of citizens. Resources are shared, there's enough to go around. As life originated in the sea, many ocean dwellers are deeply spiritual (or "woo-woo", as land dwellers would scoff), with a deep cultural love of rituals, stories, music, and art. Ocean life isn't perfect, of course. Tribalism is very common. Katie, our big buff shark girl, left the ocean because great white shark culture is aggressively spartan, with females expected to be strong, tough, indomitable leaders- there simply was no place for soft-hearted Katie. Also, Katie recalls that it's pretty hard to find a taco bell underwater after you grow tired of eating your hundredth cold wet raw fish of the month. This fact alone has put Cass off abandoning her life under late stage capitalism and fleeing to the sea, no matter how much she jokes about doing so. Still, Cass and Katie do spend the occasional weekend under the sea, soaking in the sights, sleeping in kelp beds, and enjoying the deep sea queer scene.

pinkyubus

oh my god these guys are stationed all over my campus BAHAHA i love this

Saba Saeidi

i appreciate the small details to Dons design you added to make him look OLD. Which kinda adds to the sleaze of it, but under the right light can also be appealing. I dunno, seeing this piece just smacked me in the face that OH, THATS AN OLD MAN / positive

lopoddity

Thanks so much! This is the first time we've seen Don in present day, so I had fun aging him up. :3 In all his other appearances (such as with Toffee), it's occuring in the past, with Don still in his 40s.

Murkydepths

Who are Cass's parents again?

Robo87

Their biological mother is Celia who was a teenage mom. Biscuit and Buddy (Sunny’s parents) adopted Cass. It is unknown who the bio dad is at this time

TheTabbyBadger

I forever love the way you do the seal hands/paws! Very reminiscent of actual seal fins but still adapted to this style so well :D

Robo87

Mary had a little lamb, its fleece was white as snow

Alex

This art style turned out really good. It’s really bold and emotive

Haselwoelfchen

Not Don ruining the word rad for us cool youngsters

lopoddity

I was tempted to have him say bussin' but I just couldn't bring myself to do that to y'all

lopoddity

Oh Cass is undeclared. They're mostly in college for the vibes. Katie and Brooke are both marine bio majors tho

Morghann Patterson

Neat! Are their parents paying for college? They seem like the only one who’s gone the college route. With Biscuit being a doctor and Buddy running his own business, I’d be interested in knowing what they wanted for their kids futures!

SmilesPerHour

Cass is so cute! I wanna (ask for permission to) scoop them up and give them a hug
