considering retconning some stuff

no worries, this ain't a shipping pic. There's nothing romantic at all about carrying your childhood best friend's baby.....just a gracious favor for a dear dear friend.......whose doting and attention you may be enjoying a lil too much........

Starlight? Volunteer as a surrogate to finally gain a scrap of adulation from Sunburst? Have his baby as a secret means of binding them together forever, their respective marriages be damned? What an awful accusation, how could you even think it! Starlight would never......

....get caught.

Oh this...this twisted thing that she would definitely do...I like...

MyLittleRosie

What do Flash and Sunset think? Or is this before Sunset?

lopoddity

This is after Sunset. Also after Midnight Abyss was born.

Vio_dacreator

Oh wow some ones been watching soap operas recently 😆

PrincessMuffinArt

Starlight’s still pining after Sunburst still? Oh honey.. 🥺

Vicky Hadley

I wonder who’s gonna find out what her actual plan is first

lopoddity

I doubt she REALLY wants him. She views him as a symbol of her lost idyllic youth, which is why she's so territorial about him, even in the show. By reconnecting with Sunburst, Starlight hopes to return to happier times, when the world was less complicated. Starlight loves her wife Sunset but her fixation with Sunburst persists.....

PrincessMuffinArt

Intriguing! Curious to see where this goes. 👀

mailebird

Very interesting. I forget, are sunset and sunburst siblings in your universe?

lopoddity

Yes, Sunset is Sunburst’s older sister.

TumbleBlunder

Luster doooes reasonably look like a starlight/sunburst kid...

Twilight: *sprays Starlight with a water bottle* No. Bad. I feel like Midnight would definitely look back on this when she's old enough and realize what her mom was doing. She's incredibly perceptive, and there's no better way to realize your mom never really got over her controlling tendencies than living with her your entire childhood. I can see that possibly increasing the tension between Midnight and Starlight, since Midnight still (though she'll deny it, of course) loves her mother and doesn't necessarily doesn't want to call her out and hurt her, but it's also so. Infuriating. To have Starlight constantly side-eyeing Midnight and her choices when the woman really has no room to talk... Does Sunburst ever find out? I imagine he'd feel incredibly betrayed, but have a hard time holding an actual grudge against Starlight - probably partially due to residual guilt over (accidentally) cutting Starlight out of his life the first time as kids, partially due to Starlight being the biological mother of his child, partially due to his little sister being married to the woman. Would Starlight be at all jealous/resentful of how the child *she* carried to term becomes Twilight's personal magic student? I can see her making little remarks that just... rub Flash the wrong way, and Sunburst has to try and reassure him, no, Starlight would never mean *that*, or mean it *that* way, she's just a little rough around the edges (and the whole time trying to convince himself of the same thing, on some unconscious level).

lopoddity

Heck no, trans Flash for life. I am retconning subjecting him to a pregnancy. Between hormones and magic, odds were low of him conceiving/carrying to term anyway

lopoddity

You're spot on about Sunburst tolerating a lot of Starlight's antics out of guilt. He feels AWFUL about having abandoned her to go away to magic school, especially since Starlight often cites that as the incident that "caused" her turn to villainy. I'm not certain if Sunburst would find out Starlight's true intentions behind the surrogacy.....I'm certain he doesn't WANT to know. He wants to believe Starlight is a better pony now, and that she volunteered because she's his friend. I went back and rewatched the episode "Uncommon Bond" to see if I was handling the Sunburst/Starlight relationship correctly, and I was shocked at how incredibly manipulative Starlight still is to her friend. She resents being made to share him with others, frequently breaches his boundaries, and forcibly shapeshifted him into a foal. All that would be forgivable, but when Sunburst hits his limit and blows up at her, Starlight doesn't apologize. She starts to cry, and says she was only trying to bond with him the last way she knew how. Dick move. By her crying, the narrative dismisses Sunburst's (rightful) annoyance to poor Starlight's hurt feels. Sunburst isn't allowed to be the victim, only Starlight gets to be one. In the end, it is SUNBURST who reaches out to bridge the gap, gathering up all Starlight's friends to play a game. Starlight repays this act by dropping Sunburst through the floor as a joke(???). Their friendship is strange. Sunburst puts up with a lot. Even later on, he permits a lot of Starlight's meddling in Luster's life, because (as Starlight will remind him) if it weren't for her, he wouldn't have a daughter in the first place......

“ if it weren't for her, he wouldn't have a daughter in the first place......” OOF

Are there other examples in the Pandoraverse of a surrogate pregnancy? I remember the characters that have been sperm donors like Hoity Toity and Hayseed. It would just be nice to have a healthy example of surrogacy that doesn't carry any weird connotation.

lopoddity

Shining Armor and Cadence utilized a surrogate for both of their children. :>

This is a really unique spin of a concept I’m not even fond of!  The idea of Luster being the kid of Starlight and Sunburst – whether they’re formally married or not - never made sense to me. It doesn’t add up with how she reacts to Ponyville like she’s a new arrival, or how she’s never seemed to have met the Mane 7 (other than Twilight and Spike).  The reasoning for it just sounds annoyingly shallow.  “She has a similar name, color scheme, and is also a nerd with no friends!”  By that logic, we could argue that Sunset is Sunburst’s secret baby.  (Anyone wants to try writing that, I’m down to proofread).  It’s like people got so used to all the foil characters for Twilight running around, they forget what the similarities are even supposed to signify.  But YOUR fanon does overcome the logic issue.  Since Flash and Sunburst are tucked away nice and cozy in the frozen North, it makes sense how Luster missed out on meeting all these people. I found the idea behind Starlight’s intentions to be... off-putting.  It took me a few days thinking about it (and even longer to post, because of my job) to parse through it. First thing out of the way, I already know that I have a more optimistic view on Starlight than you do Lop.  So I made sure I pushed that bias down.  I also admit that a pregnancy in this kind of context made me feel... I don’t know, maybe ‘squeamish’ is right word?  ‘Creeped out?’  I don’t know if that’s because I still having hangups about a woman’s body, and somehow still view a womb as overly mysterious and sacred. There was the concern I already posted about how this unintentionally feeds into the idea that surrogate pregnancies are something undertaken by weirdos with unaddressed hangups.  Thank you for responding to my query on that. I hope whoever carried either/both Skyla and Flurry will have a name, face, and a few sentences of backstory dedicated to them. There’s also just an element of confusion to the development.  I wasn’t aware that Luster Dawn and her family were even involved much with Starlight.  Sunset is his sister, and I knew they all see each other occasionally.  But they’re so far away, and they didn’t seem to have interacted for over a decade in the Pandoraverse timeline.  So it feels like a left turn to learn that not only does Starlight still have a deep seated hang up over her old friend, but moreso that this whole time there’s been this weirdly intimate, quasi-familial thread linking them together.  But I accept that the timeline and lineages are things a creator can nonlinearly adjust as they desire. I figure you WANT us to feel uncomfortable with this revelation, and the mess of things it implies.  I also assume that you put as much thought and good intention behind this as you have everything else.  So I tried to separate any critiques on the execution from just a disagreement in direction.  (Or any regressive hangups).

Dragon Turtle

Thank you for clarifying that, Lop.  If she viewed her own wife partly as just a consolation prize, that would really suck.  Not in the sense of not making no sense in the given context, but just in the sense that it would be a downer.  I never saw StarShimmer as an interesting ship, until I read more of your work with them.  You actually sold me, even if it still isn’t my mainstay for either.

lopoddity

"There was the concern I already posted about how this unintentionally feeds into the idea that surrogate pregnancies are something undertaken by weirdos with unaddressed hangups." ......I have never encountered that idea, whether in fiction or real life, in all the years I've been on this planet. For this reason, I don't really feel the need to explore the bit characters that carried Shining and Cadence's kids. I reflect a LOT on implications my work can send, but I don't buy the idea that "surrogates are weirdos" can be derived from this story. Starlight is the weirdo here. It's only natural she'd be weird about surrogacy. Your criticism is that it makes you uncomfortable, but my goal IS to make you uncomfortable with this story. The same way that several of Starlight's episodes make ME uncomfortable. It's perfectly in-character for Starlight to manipulate a friend this way, and to use extreme measures to do so, all with a smile on her face. I really like leaning into the more uncomfy aspects of Starlight's character, but I understand how it can make a Starlight fan unhappy. You're free to just not read it. :>

PrincessBubble

I'm sorry, but I don't understand anything. You wrote that Sunburst used a spell to become a woman. He and Flash conceived a child and Sunburst became pregnant. Okay, I get that you've probably dropped the idea. But why? How did Midnight, Irie and other children of same-sex couples come into being?

lopoddity

"You wrote that Sunburst used a spell to become a woman." Yep, I can see where the confusion would come in, cuz I never wrote that. :> I wrote that Sunburst and Flash were able to have a biological child (Luster Dawn) together because Flash is a trans stallion (ie. he and Sunburst have bits compatible for baby-making). I've since retconned that into Sunburst and Flash having a child through a surrogate, Starlight Glimmer. Flash is still trans, it just seemed unfair to subject him to a pregnancy.....and I think think this storyline is more interesting.
