Quibble Pants and and Mudbriar squabbling over what to name their brand new son. They end up compromising with Twiddle Twiggy Twaddle, "Twiddle Twaddle" meaning chatter (and homage to Quibble's name), and Twiggy of course being the name of Mud's stupid pet stick. Quibble, being a literature snob, enjoys his son's tongue-twister of a name.....meanwhile poor lil Twaddles couldn't figure out how tf to say his own name and went by "Taddo" for much of his youth.

In the past my solution for queer characters reproducing was to temporarily magically modify one partner's sex for baby-making purposes. I've come to dislike the heteronormativity of that and would probably eliminate/retcon it entirely, if it wasn't so ingrained in the pandoraverse. SO. No magic sex changes this time. So how did Mud and Quib go about having their son?

MLP establishes that all that's needed to create whole ass sapient autonomous clones is a dip in a magical mirror pool. I think ponies, learning of this, would start fiddling with magic, especially how it pertains to genetics and cloning. After years of research and never-ending legislation, one university research lab is approved for a colossal genetic undertaking. This experiment will seek to fuse the magical essence of two ponies, creating a viable hybrid offspring.

Mud happened to be a professor of dendrology (study of wooded plants) at the university, and hey, every research trial needs volunteers. Quibble and Mud went into this not expecting much, but hoping to provide valuable insight for the scientific world.

Except oh hey, the experiment worked. Twaddles was one of several other babies engineered through the research lab. As the science was still in it's infancy, the children of "Generation 01" tended to have flaws in their physical composition. Twaddles, for example, is severely visually impaired (legally blind), and cannot see things much further away than his own nose. Corrective lenses and visual aids help him function somewhat, but the world is extraordinarily blurry to Twaddles. Twaddles was also born undersized, with some respiratory issues.....as an adult he is an asthmatic and prone to illness. He and Cloudburst were often grouped together in primary school, but they really became friends the day Twaddles' glasses were stolen by bullies. Afraid and lost, he found himself clinging to the closest object (Cloudy), and apologizing profusely, embarrassed to the point of tears.....Cloudy immediately reassured him and offered to walk him home. They ended up hanging out after school on the regular, bonding over a shared love of anime and junk food.

Twaddles is adored by his nerd daddos, and he loves them in turn. They have worked tirelessly from his birth to accommodate his every need and smother him with relentless affection. This contributed to Twaddles chipper outlook on life, and his shamelessness about his many interests. Like his parents, Twads loves a pedantic debate, and can often be seen squabbling with his dads over which obscure sci-fi series is better than which.

Yes everything YES everything here just screams wholesome and I ablsoultetly loveit!

Vio_dacreator

Also doesn't Quibble have naturally Blonde hair? Is he just constantly redying?

lopoddity

Quibble is naturally blonde, but I keep it dyed just for recognizability and readability :>. Otherwise I'd get lots of comments asking "Who's that?"

Vio_dacreator

About the headcanon of ponies making babies. If ponies can change sex why cant they just change small pieces of themselves to the other. Like something as small as changing an egg to a sperm cell. So if you have a lesbian couple one of the women just donates her egg (thats magicked to a sperm) and and then medically inserted to the female and boom she impregnated.

Vio_dacreator

For guys idk maybe one sperm is changed to an egg and then they go the old fashioned way of getting a surrogate to hold their baby. And then its still biologically theres.

MyLittleRosie

Twaddle is a good boy. At first I thought you were going down the root of toxic neckbeard but I like what I’ve seen of him so far!

lopoddity

Nah, t'was never my role to make Twaddles neckbeardy or incel-y or whatever. He's actually based a little off several kids I knew in high school, we were in an anime club and met up in the library afterschool to watch/discuss anime. I'm REALLY embarrassed about that but also stupid nostalgic for those times so Twaddles is me making peace with my weeaboo days, I guess. The anime kids (and myself) weren't mean or toxic, just a bunch of super excitable and somewhat awkward people psyched about sharing a common interest. Twaddles is an homage to them.

feathermaws

I love your Briar design! Also I love the new HC for same sex babies, especially because it a thing that is currently being researched and might be possible in the nearish distant future.

MyLittleRosie

That’s incredibly sweet and endearing! I have to admit, I went through a small anime phase as well. I know some anime has some problematic aspects so I understand being nervous about admitting you were a weeaboo. My favourites were Mushi Shi, Wolf’s Rain and Princess Tutu! I love how wrong my immediate concern was, Twaddle is such a good natured nerd! What genre of anime did you like?

Robo87

I love this!!!! And I love Twaddles and his friendship with Cloudy <3 Does Twaddles still have Clear Sky as his adoptive mom? I think I remember you saying on one of your posts that she was in a relationship with Quibble and Briar? I really like this new way of reproduction too! (Talk nerdy to me). I like to think that same sex couples (or a reproductively challenged couple) have a lot of different ways to start a family. I can see spellborns as being relatively uncommon, at least to stallion couples. I mean a mare changing into a stallion to impregnate her wife seems like an easy, fun transformation. And fast, as she can change back after they concieve. A stallion, however, has to endure months long pregnancy, new hormones, and oh yeah their new vagina gets ripped a sunder at the end of all of it. It's a serious commitment and a true labor of love to bring a foal that way. And, unfortunately, complications are more common from a stallion-to-mare pregancy (this may have played a factor into Stormy's own tramatic pregancy and premature birth to his widdle Finnie) But like any individual some stallions are okay with all of this and take it all on. Some, like Umbra, found being pregnant and feeling their foals in their belly as one of the best experiences of their lives (Umbra's triplet pregancy is VERY rare with spellborn births. He was considered high risk (and good lord did Clipsy fret over his husband during this time) but luckily his pregancy overall was peaceful and event free. So yeah take my random ass gay horse baby making hc XD

I liked the typical popular stuff- Dragonball, Naruto, One Piece, Inuyasha, etc, but my favorite anime was the same super girly stuff I’ve drawn Twaddles enjoying. I enjoyed a lot of these works for the pretty aesthetics and fluffy romance, and did not realize some of the squickier undertones til I was older. :/ I remember loving both Chobits, Love Hina, Tokyo Mew Mew, Wedding Peach.....many of these are impossible to enjoy now because they are SO rife with unnecessary sexualization, especially with underaged characters. As a kid I thought nothing of the glittery transformation sequences, now I’m like.....why is necessary for this child character to bend over when her cat tail appears? Why are the outfits so skimpy? Why does the lame guy protagonist have a whole harem fighting over him? The objectification feels inescapable in girly anime and it is SO creepy. Now I stick to mainstream anime, even though many of these series still retain gross elements (not a fan of the “lovable pervert” character trope, a la Master Roshi or Jiraiya.)

Clear Sky is indeed Twaddles adoptive mom, she (and her daughter) just pop up in Quibble and Mud’s lives a little later than she does in canon. Wind Sprint is a teenager and Twaddles is a small child when Clear, Mud, and Quibble start considering forming a herd. It was a long adjustment period for surly Wind Spirit, though she eventually came to appreciate having TWO dads that cared about her, as opposed to her shitty indifferent bio dad, Wind Rider. It took her longer still to get along with Twaddles, who she resented for stealing her mom’s attention and also being unathletic and annoying. Twaddles however looked up to his big stepsister from day one, and eventually pestered his way into her tsundere jock heart~

It’s uncreative, not to mention intrusive. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth. MLP is a world full of magic and fantasy, so why adhere to a heteronormative outlook on reproduction? In MLP G1 there were hardly any stallions, yet there were many, many babies. I have vague recollection of some of these babies being created through magical means? Made from wishing on a star, found in a cabbage patch, stuff like that. In the first television show, I believe the babies were said to be “born from their mother’s reflection”. Clearly there is a way for queer couples to reproduce without defaulting to something as lazy as forcing a body change on them. My handling of topics like gender and sex have been clumsy in the past, you don’t need to defend it.

Lory

And to pull a Mudbriar, technically, you only need a sperm and egg for conventional reproduction. All else is just details. I really like the idea of finding other ways characters can have babies because not only does it force the “wrong gender” onto ponies, but it’s also cute for babies to appear by magic. There’s something so sweet and pure about it.

lopoddity

Yes! Why stick to how babymaking works in our world? G1 MLP straight up had immaculate conception/cloning, a mare would gaze into a magic mirror and a baby version of herself would pop out. I'm totally enamored with the idea of pony babies appearing through all sorts of magical means. Maybe a farmer couple find a mysterious flower that blooms into a newborn. If Equestria has magical gift-giving reindeer and mystical seedling spirits and a whole ass crystal castle that grows from a magic lockbox, then perhaps it isn't so out there to have a magic stork that grants children to couples that wish for one. Certainly highly magical creatures are capable of parthenogenesis, Greek gods style. The possibilities are endless!

I'm a bit confused by this. So they didn't know there would be defects in generation 1 I assume. By gen 2 are the kinks all resolved? Because it seems weird to be like all the gay characters have to have sickly kids with birth defects. Also it seems weird in a moral sense to just have an institution that is experimenting on actual babies. Wouldnt it make more sense that the kids only possible problems are genetic diseases that they inherit from their parents? Not stuff caused by the magical process? But like if the problems are sorted out by gen 2 that's fine.

Lory

"all the gay characters have to have sickly kids with birth defects" They don't. Cloudy comes from a Hetero relationship, and she suffers from similar maladies. Unless you're saying that the magical process leads to defects in children produced by homosexual couples, which also isn't true, because this experiment is open to anyone. Not only to gay couples. As for baby experimentation...I guess the only time that would be happening is if the cloning process actually produced a baby. Otherwise, only genes are involved. And once a baby is produced, the experiment concludes as a success. If a baby dies in the process of gene combination, was it ever really a baby? Say the genes reject each other, and the zygote is no longer viable. Do experiment-produced babies have the same value of life to naturally produced babies? I'm sure to the parents they do, but would they to the broader culture or in legal terms? Would that be equivalent to losing a baby? There's a very thin line that separates genetic confluences from "baby". The process is not all that different from in-vitro babies. It's just now made possible for every kind of couple. idk it does raise a lot of interesting moral questions!

lopoddity

"all the gay characters have to have sickly kids with birth defects".......hmm. I'm honestly not sure where you're getting that? Are you new to my stories? I have written many able-bodied children born to gay couples, as well as disabled children born to hetero couples. Any parent, regardless of orientation, has the potential to conceive a disabled child. Reproductive engineering turned out a few disabled infants because I seriously doubt that Equestria (remember, this is a world just barely on the cusp of an industrial age) is advanced enough to blend genetic material from two unrelated ponies and use it to cobble together an entire infant, and do it perfectly on the first try. For all of humankind's greater technology, it still took us 434 attempts to clone one sheep (Dolly). Gen 01 had it's problems yes, but it's a bit silly to insist all the "kinks" be worked out by Gen 02. ALL reproduction, traditional or assisted, will always inherently carry some amount of risk. "Also it seems weird in a moral sense to just have an institution that is experimenting on actual babies." That is never stated. The institution experiments to create babies. The babies themselves are released to their parents, although their health and development is extensively documented, for research purposes. I'm also a little confused by "Wouldn't it make more sense that the kids only possible problems are genetic diseases that they inherit from their parents", because this also does not bode true for natural reproduction. Many diseases and disabilities are not necessarily inherited from a parent, and can be the result of gene mutation, or environmental causes......so I'm not sure why you're insisting the offspring should only have hereditary diseases. Disease and disability, while not uncommon with engineered children, is not necessarily inherent to them either. Especially as research progresses and advancements are made in the technology.

Melody Williamson

I'm getting it from this line "As the science was still in it's infancy, the children of "Generation 01" tended to have flaws in their physical composition." I thought that meant that this process is specifically causing the kids to have disabilities which was weird imo. Sorry I'm very bad at explaining my thoughts and using proper wording lol.

Ethical quandaries are one of my favorite aspects of MLP. Do you remember when Twilight exploded all those Pinkie Pie clones? She's uncomfortably casual about the whole thing. Does that imply the clones were not fully sapient? Even if they were simply magical constructs, are they not entitled to a right to exist? Were they even ever really alive at all? Or were they fully realized individuals all along, and Twilight just committed mass murder? Would Twilight's explosion spell have also killed the real Pinkie? Can you imagined being pitted against your clone to determine the "real" you, and the loser has to die? MLP is wild man

Melody Williamson

Yeaah I gotcha! Thanks for explaining everything!

D

The story about him clinging to Cloudy is going to make me CRY,, that sounds so precious. If you don’t draw it, I will. And I’m warning you, it’ll be brain-meltingly adorable either way

Monstromax

Whoa. I think school anime clubs based out of the library must be a universal constant, because what you described is pretty much exactly what I experienced at my high school. I only went to the anime club there a couple times, but it was the same clique of awkward dorks as well :p

Non-Euclidean Cat

I look at that picture and I just can't help thinking that Quibble could have done much better than Mudbriar.

lopoddity

honestly i find quibble to be waaaaaay more annoying, imo Mudbriar is the one out of Quib's league XD

PrincessBubble

I just don't understand what's wrong with heterosexual sex as a mean of conceiving a foal. For unicorns, this is convenient and less costly.

lopoddity

It imposes heteronormativity on queer couples, which I dislike. I myself would be pretty unhappy if in a world of magic and fantasy, the only way to have a child would be to force a sex change onto my partner. Just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. :/ Also not a fan of how I previously used it as a mean-spirited joke against Bruce (trapping Bruce in a different sex body), it feels sexist and squicky now, in ways that are difficult for me to articulate. So tldr: I’m cutting back on the “magic sex change” route for child conception because I no longer like it.
