Can smoky talk through telepathy? I thought I read that somewhere. If he can can we get some dialogue from him?

lopoddity

*checks my notes* Smoky can use telepathy, but tends to reserve it for criminals. Most people find it intrusive and disorienting to have a voice suddenly speaking in their head, and Smoky already associates it with tormenting and intimidating the very worst villainous scum. As some ponies are still wary and afraid of him, he doesn’t want to contribute to their unease by using the same sort of mind control magic Chrysalis used in their dear captain Shining Armor. Sign language puts the ponies a little more at ease, makes him seem a little more “harmless”, so it’s what he uses. He WOULD absolutely use telepathy/mind control against Montezuma, but Monty‘s Sphinx side gives him a natural resistance to mental magic, and he casts additional magic wards to protect himself and his minions (though they are not immune, Smoky has gotten into their heads and even puppeted their bodies before). Montezuma’s mind is pretty sturdy, and Smoky can’t “get in” without Montezuma basically granting him total permission. He naturally never wants to do this, he’s seen what Smoky can do to the minions Waaaaay in the future maybe, when Smoky has gone rogue and they’ve established trust, Monty might be open to it. Maybe if they’re doing something where Smoky’s hands are too occupied to sign (WOW that sounds dirty but I meant like, the pair of them cuddling), so Monty consents when he feels Smoky‘s magic “knock” at the door to his mind. Then is DELIGHTED, because he gets to hear his nemesis’ “voice” for the first time. So deep and lovely and soothing, Monte could listen to it forever (not actually listen tho, he’s so busy fawning over it he didn’t hear Smoky asking if he wanted to go get nachos) *closes notes* Yup, Smoky can use telepathy but moooostly doesn't. I originally planned to have him speaking telepathically here (specifically he was asking Monty why he's being such a dick), buuuut I kinda like conveying Smoke's thoughts through his expressions alone, and through the reactions of the characters around him. He is mute, after all, it feels a little like "cheating" to depict him talking telepathically.
