It's Pandora and Cupcake! In animal form!....Well, different animal forms, I mean.

I decided to redo Cupcake. I rounded out her bulky rectangle body and changed her color palette. Cupcake just doesn't feel like Cupcake without her cutesy-wutesy warm colors. Initially I wanted to keep the animal characters similar in coloration to their real-world counterparts, but the fact is most land mammals are some shade of grey or brown, meaning I was gonna eventually end up in a sea of dull-colored furries. I still intend to keep the characters (relatively) reasonably colored, but I think I can deviate every now and then. Besides, "blonde" grizzly bears exist in real life. >:O Penny's tail and hair are dyed.

u like cupcake's death metal band name? maul mayhem? like mall mayhem? get it? hurrhurr took me like twenty minutes to come up with sorry animal puns are hard okay

So this is Pandora's little furry export, Penny. It's short for Pendleton, not Penelope, and she will get huffy if you get it wrong. Magic does not exist in the world of Fuzzbutts, but that doesn't mean Pendleton Pennigan Prosimian is your ordinary ring-tailed lemur.

I mentioned Bruce lives in an apartment complex with his roommate Sunny and various neighbors, but I decided to change it to a boarding house. Said boarding house is owned by Penny, who inherited it when her grandmother unexpectedly kicked the bucket, saddling Pen with a shabby old building and a gaggle of odd tenants. Penny was.....not happy about this.

Penny, you see, is an aspiring thespian! Or at least, she was. Turns out steady acting work is hard to come by, especially for a lemur. No matter how well Pen can sing or dance or tell a knock-knock joke, it seems audiences like an actor on stage big enough to actually see from their seat. Poo. While Pen has never quite given up her acting dreams, she still had bills to pay, so she went into a line of work that never has a shortage of openings- children's entertainment. Pen is a performer and a professional clown, and she can do everything from making balloon animal-people to juggling knives. While it wasn't the most fulfilling career (children like pulling her tail far too much), it was still fun and challenging enough, especially aided by her "bear-ry" best friend Cupcake, whom she met at clown college. Cupcake was studying to learn the ways of comedy, which Penny doesn't get, because she finds Cupcake hilarious without the bear even trying. Penny was actually settling into her life, feeling happy, maybe considering finally asking Cupcake out- when good ol' Granny Pennigan Prosimian croaked and left her stuck with a literal animal house.

And so, Penny became a landlady (land-lemur). It's a tough job, because nobody likes landlords, and Penny fervently, desperately needs to be liked. She insists on knowing each of her boarders personally and insisting on them all acting like one big happy family, complete with potluck dinners and birthday celebrations and movie nights- which tends to only annoy her tenants. She's got a lot of Michael Scott energy, for all my Office fans out there. As Penny once was a broke youngster scraping to get by, she purposefully keeps rent low. She believes in offering her tenants low-cost living......uh, in exchange for low-effort land-lording, of course. As Penny doesn't know jack shit about maintaining property or actually getting people to pay their rent, she brought Cupcake along as an assistant. Cupcake does minor repairs around the boarding house, cooks meals, terrifies the boarders into following house rules, and generally keeps Penny from doing anything too stupid.

Penny's gender identity is kinda ambiguous, and she refers to herself with varying pronouns. She is very, very, very queer, and as such her boarding house tends to attract all manner of queer animal-folk. She's 100% theater kid, melodramatic, excitable, and prone to bursting into song and dance. She is often found riding around on Cupcake's shoulder, discreetly eavesdropping on her boarders, and sunbathing on the roof. She's become quite fond of teasing Bruce, one of her newest tenants.

Love the decision to do a boarding house instead of an apartment building. Gives me Hey Arnold vibes and I’m here for it.

RagingRiptide

I say go ham with the colors, you can bend the rules a little to make the crowed pop~ I think a lemur suits Pandora/Penny SO well! 😄

lopoddity

i will never miss the chance to inject Hey Arnold vibes into my work. Cupcake was originally inspired by Big Patty :)

SketchyBug

Oh yeah! I remember when you said that a few months back! I love the influence! I expect there to be a Jungle Movie at some point. Maybe in a decade and a half after cancellation.

Gleeman and Artist

I think it's fine if all the animal colors aren't too realistic. If animals can talk in your universe, then it's possible for them to be different colors, too. I love the colors on Penny.

Paddiefrog

These designs are so cute, I love em

Imogen

i 100% am hype for more pictures of penny's life because i am now her biggest fan

PrincessMuffinArt

Such a cute idea for Penny! I love her tail colors!

Ugh this idea is so FUN and these designs are so gorgeous!!!! Pan’s furry design is just perfect, and I still think it fits nicely and naturally into an anthro (but still reasonably realistic) animal world

lopoddity

....Are you being serious? Because the Jungle Movie was actually came out in like 2017. Did you miss it's release? XD It's on Netflix, it's pretty good.

Bigsmile

You can never break apart the dream team! Did Cupcake ever join the military in this setting? A big strong ass bear seems like the exact kind of person that the military would want.

SketchyBug

Nah nah, I mean since you're pulling references from Hey Arnold, I was making a joke about how this universe would have its own Jungle Movie-story 15 years from now. As for the actual Jungle Movie, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for it to come out. The ending had me in tears.

cactus bastrop

PLEASE tell me penny has a secret movie script starring herself as an agent of the FBI (furry bureau of investigation)

I wonder what they’re size comparison is! I imagine this isn’t quite to their respective scale?

I honestly gotta wonder why Cupcake is in clown school. Does she actually enjoy it? Is it to make her parents happy? Was she thinking of dropping out when she met Penny? On a completely different note, I have to wonder about like...Sunny's parents and their all-dog household. Was it just convenience? Mild speciesism? How do most people decide on what kind of kid to adopt? How do most birth parents take the whole adoption thing? And finally - Cloudburst's energy makes me think of, of all things, scenthounds. But her pony-design leans me more towards something like a Lhasa Ahpso...maybe she's just a french bulldog slowed down by all her health issues, haha. (Sorry for the massive and confused paragraph! As always, patreon hates phones)

Vio_dacreator

Oh god this is giving me King Julien and Sonya the bear from Madagascar 3 vibes!!!! Did you take inspo? If not the universe must have a sense of humour bc this is too good to pass up 😂

SmilesPerHour

Squee! I love these designs and headcanons! I'm laughing so much at the mental image of a boarding house full of talking animals being led by an eccentric theater nerd. You're amazing, Lop! :D

lopoddity

Wow, thank you! :D Glad to hear you like it!

SmilesPerHour

You're welcome! :) tbh, I like this version of the Pandoraverse just as much as the MLP version. It allows for some great variety when the characters don't all have to be equines.

pookaWOODS

I just need to add how much I adore both of these designs, but especially Cupcake's

This redesign of cupcake is amazing!

No, no, I like getting questions like yours. :) Helps me figure out the story. Cupcake attended clown school because her adoptive family are circus animals. She loves them and admires their work (and how happy they make people), and she aspired to follow in their tiny pawprints someday. Unfortunately....Cupcake just doesn't grasp comedy. She can tell a joke, she can ride a tiny unicycle, she can honk her clown nose just fine....but it's never very funny. In fact, no matter how hard Cupcake tries, most children just seem afraid of a big lumbering bear. Clown college was her last hope of shaping herself into a decent entertainer. Her studies proved to be fruitless and frustrating, though a silver lining appeared when she met Penny. The pair quickly bonded over feeling like misfits at their chosen profession (Pen is too tiny to be a good mainstream actor, Cupcake is too scary to be a proper clown). Penny and Cupcake vow to become the best performers they can be- and they create a show that's actually decently successful. Penny plays the wacky clown, while Cupcake plays the straight man to her silly antics, often taking a pie or a squirt of water to the face. It's a hit with kids! Children love seeing a kooky little lemur get the better of the bear. Cupcake should finally feel happy....but she doesn't. One day, their clown careers are put on pause when Penny learns she's inherited the boarding house. Although Penny is frustrated and overwhelmed by the demands of managing property and keeping the tenants happy, Cupcake finds herself secretly loving it? Doing repairs around the house, clearing out the cobwebs and filling the shelves with knickknacks, picking vegetables in the garden with Bruce, listening to Priscilla's tips on decor, cooking meals for the other boarders- watching bashfully as everyone gets starry-eyed at a triple layer cake she baked. Penny is always so anxious with her, ardently apologizing and saying soon they'll be able to offload the boarding house onto someone else and get back to their act- but Cupcake privately wonders if THIS is where she's meant to be. Where they're meant to be. Puppies are the most commonly adopted children, as they tend to be easy-going, quick to learn, and highly malleable. This is why Sunny's parents went for a pup. They are old-fashioned, old-money Golden Retrievers, hailing from a long line of Golden Retrievers....they certainly weren't going to adopt a cat, ha! Frankie was definitely not their first pick (they wanted a pedigree pup), she just seemed the least mutt-like of the orphanage's pups. As you may have noticed, Sunny's parents are not the best people. Speciesim is definitely a thing in Fuzzbutts, certain animals are (often unfairly) stereotyped and discriminated against. Cupcake sat in the foster care system for many years before her adoptive mom and dad visited and absolutely fell in love with her. Most species look to adopt a similar species, both out of convenience and familiarity. Cupcake's adoption was highly unusual, as her parents are sugar gliders that adopted a predatory animal hundreds of times their own size. This required a total overhaul of their lifestyle and home to properly accommodate their grizzly bear daughter, but they did it with a smile on their tiny faces. Cupcake knows she is very, very lucky.
