concept art for our expy of Captain Cutthroat! Meet Silas Abalone. I initially thought it'd be neat to have him be a big ass grey kangaroo like Silver so you could have the neat visual symbolism of him constantly looming over his sons, buuuut then I wondered if it might be more interesting for him to be a dinky little asshole. :>

notes (trigger warning for abusive parenting):

-in his late fifties. Trained Silver from adolescence to be the world's next great kickboxing star, is his son's personal coach

-bitter as hell, allergic to smiling. May give the odd wheezy chuckle sometimes, usually at someone else's misfortune

-Napoleon complex for days. Culture among macropods emphasizes strength and size for males, yet no matter how much Silas bulks up, he can't do anything about his size. He's smaller than the average dog, and certainly smaller than the kangaroo bucks that populate his hometown. As he grew up constantly getting picked on and pushed around by bigger animals, he decided to dedicate himself to fighting back.

-His sons call him “sir”. Bad things happen if they forget.

-A yeller. Despite being a coach, Silas has never implemented a pep talk in his life. His default parenting strategy is to ruthlessly tear his sons apart, then dare them to go prove him wrong.

-His favorite insults for Silver are typically variations on his oldest son being fat, lazy, and/or an idiot. As for Bruce, he prefers to call his youngest son fat, girly, and of course, absolutely worthless.

(insulting Bruce's naturally pear-shaped body)

-Much like Cutthroat before him, Silas isn't afraid to show open contempt toward Bruce. When Bruce was a small child, he was caught up in an accident that tragically ended in the death of his mother, Fey. Although it truly wasn't Bruce's fault, Silas blames his youngest son entirely for the cruel, abrupt death of his wife and the fracturing of their family. He is the one that sowed the rift between Bruce and Silver, making sure Silver knew Bruce was to blame for their mother being gone. Although as adults Bruce and Silver would eventually begin to patch their relationship, there remains a note of anger and hurt between them to this day. Bruce still blames himself for the accident, and his guilt manifests as a near-constant state of depression.

-Silas also resents Bruce because Bruce- small, weak, and sensitive- secretly reminds Silas of himself, and this is painful. Thus Silas projects his self-loathing onto his son. Even Silver doesn't escape this. Where most parents want their kids to be better than them, Silas feels a fierce need to chain down his sons with the same baggage he has.

-Even as an adult, Silver is terrified of disappointing their father. He obeys him without question and tries to shrug off Sila's hateful tirades, always contorting himself to be the son he thinks Silas wants. Bruce is also afraid of their dad, but also much more over it than Silver is. Silver is the favorite, so mercifully Bruce was never much the focus of his dad's attention. Bruce moved out of the house the second he was able and refuses to ever again be in the same room at Silas. This hurts Silver, who really wishes his little broken family could feel whole again, but doubts if it's even possible.

*cracks knuckles* Square up you mini hoppity fuck I love his design!! He looks as mean as a rattlesnake and I love it Ya know I always assumed Fuzzbutts Cuttroat would be like the pony version and have a genuine love and pride for his eldest son (though terribly unhealthy), but I think this version of their relationship is fascinating, as are the implications that Silas might resent his eldest son for being a kangaroo as much as he does his youngest for being small Silver is everything Silas has always wanted to be and unlike Cutthroat he has no reason to see Silver as a "chip off the old block", but rather as some form of universal mockery of him

The thing I hate a lot is men with fragile/toxic masculinity. Hence why cutthroat and villian moony were such good stories of angst even if the characters really need some karma Silas makes a great antagonist (even though hes not supposed to be a villian 🥴). Silas sees his son as two sides of a mirror it seems. One, is what he sees himself as when he looks in a mirror, the other is what he is (so he keeps breaking it.).

Thank you. :) He makes for a neat visual contrast against Fey, who was big and soft with kind eyes. Welllllll I'm trying to avoid retreading a lot of old ground. Throwing in some new spice. There probably WAS a point where Silas felt genuine love and pride in his sons, but that died with his wife. Now Silas resents them both. Silver especially is a big walking reminder of everything Silas can never be, so whenever Silver is getting too cocky or shirking training or palling around with friends, Silas is always sure to take him down a notch. He's like.....living vicariously through Silver's triumphs, but the feeling is always fleeting, he hates how Silver is always looking to him for praise or guidance or love because Silas deep down doesn't feel like he deserves his son's love or admiration. He isn't strong like Silver, he wasn't strong enough to protect Fey. So he lashes out. By making Silver do pushups in the rain til he's swallowed a gallon of mud, or run laps til he's close to collapsing. He's cultivating Silver's strength, but also punishing him for having it.

I got attached to Silver and decided to keep him around. But Bruce's family just ain't right without a whole lot of unaddressed grief and trauma, so I decided to kill Fey off instead. I was brainstorming her death scene last night, I think it'll be an interesting spin on the pandoraverse carcharodon family

Colbyr

Hahaha let me kill him :333 let me throw hands with this man :)))))

Young Bruce: Look, dad! I got straight As on my report card! Silas: Aww, and what does the little buttercup want, huh? A cookie? A new ballet dress? A kiss on the mouth? Bruce: N-no, I- I thought you'd be proud..... Silas: Proud? Of some letters on a scrap of paper? Come back when you can accomplish somethin that amounts to a can of beans. Bring home a gold medal, THEN I'll be proud. Silver, running through the door: Hey dad I just won a gold medal! Silas: >:( Just one?

Colbyr

Bruce, quietly: and actually yeah a cookie would be nice :(((

I kinda wonder with Silas' browns and yellows(?) if that means Bruce and Silver got more of their color schemes from Fey (which probably does not at all help Silas' berating)

Adult Bruce: Yeah, it looks like the zooniversity botany journal is gonna publish my paper, but it's no big deal. I only worked on it for a couple months- Sunny: um YEAH it is a big deal! You were working on that thing for almost a year! I saw firsthand how many all-nighters you pulled! Skye: Oh, oh! We should go out for ice cream to celebrate! I know an herbivore shop that has edible flowers as a topping~ Sunny: Good idea pupcake! Perfect for a big plant nerd! What do you think, Brucie-whoa, wait.....are you crying? Bruce: *big wet sniff* nO

Colbyr

STOP YOURE MAKING ME SHIP THEM but hypothetically.... If that trio dated (or even if they didn't)..... imagine Skye eventually learning about Silas and all his grade-a parenting and going and just KICKING HIS ASS. don't ask me how but it could happen and I'd pay to see it

They got their coloration from their mom. Fey was an eastern grey kangaroo, her coat was a pretty silver-blue, a few shades darker than Silver's fur.

tricoloryn

Amber

Logan and Skye join forces to plan actual murder to protect their buddies *some hcs! -You wouldn't think it in a million years at first glance, but Skye and Logan are actually friends and enthusiastic work out buddies. She joined his gym, and he got into yoga because of her. They often use their long distance jogs to gossip or get relationship advice....or for Logan to suddenly start GUSHING about his new friendship with his favorite lil neighbor's BEAUTIFUL big brother -Logan can be uncomfortably perceptive on the issues in Skye's relationship, but he doesnt push the topic when she changes the subject -Adopts Bruce as his little brother completely against the other's will. Will throw hands over him. Bruce would like to throw hands WITH him

Melody Williamson

How much of his abusiveness tied to grief from losing his wife? Can we get some insight into the way he was raised too?

Colbyr

Bruce: Oi! You overgrown, over-trimmed, pain-in-the-ass rabbit! Put me the FUCK down, I did NOT agree to joinin' ya at your bloody stupid GYM- Logan, smiling, not bothering to resist the urge to pat Bruce's hair as he has him tucked under one arm: Oh, come on, lil' bro! It'll be fun! Some exercise will do you good, and Silv's waiting for us, and -- Bruce, feral, snapping, making everyone on the crosswalk approaching them cross to the other side of the street out of wariness: I SWEAR TO GOD YOU GODDAMN HIPPE MANSCAPED 'ROO IF YOU TOUCH MY HAIR ONE MORE TIME -- Also, if Logan and Silver ever got married (which I kind of doubt they'd do officially, but let's entertain it just for a moment), Bruce walks up to give his Best Man speech and just looks out at the audience, and says in a deadpan, "We are here today to celebrate the unholy matrimony of my two big brothers." Cue confused murmuring throughout most of the crowd while those in the know just facepalm. But Logan, sitting next to Silver behind the head table, just starts crying and wiping his nose on the fancy napkins that took forever to pick out because oh my god Silv did you hear that's the *first time he's called me his big bro I'm so honored????* And Bruce absolutely meant his comment as a sort of backhanded insult/jab, but also knew 100% what he was doing even if he pretended afterwards that that WASN'T what he meant, goddammit put him DOWN
