I decided to fiddle with Bruce's design. His old one was based on his Pandoraverse design, which was initially created to be a one-off unimportant character. Pony Bruce is thus very monochromatic and simple looking, which I think works well when he's standing against my more complex and colorful pandoraverse characters, but in Fuzzbutts, he was left looking  drab and unimportant. :<

So! I tweaked his colors and also changed his species. He's now a whiptail wallaby (Notamacropus parryi), also known as the pretty-faced wallaby✨~ They're a small marsupial known for the striking markings on their lovely, doe-like faces. So you have the contrast of Bruce, who is introverted and cranky, burdened by this sort of natural beauty and effortless cuteness. It pisses him off, and what's more, his pretty widdle face has not gone unnoticed by his roommate.

Sunny, to himself: ......interesting phrasing there buddy

Let's get something straight right off the bat....Fuzzbutts is not Beastars. I love me some Beastars, but I feel like as irl people already tend to lean paranoid and tribalistic, any world where part of the population is confirmed to instinctively devour people would just be an absolute shitshow, like no wolves falling in love with bunnies, only anarchy and philosophical horror. Carnivores in Fuzzbutts are not gripped by constant primal urges to maim and consume their friends and neighbors, nor purchase people-meat at illegal black markets. Even irl carnivores are not bloodthirsty monsters with an uncontrollable urge to kill.

But. Predators in Fuzzbutts are still animals. They do still have instincts. Namely, the prey drive. In all predators, the prey drive follows a sequence: Search-Stalk-Chase-Bite-Dissect-Consume. In a civilized society, this drive has been greatly reduced over generations, but it is still present....and it's stronger in some species than others.

Sunny's prey drive often manifests as a strooong fixation on Bruce. Bruce is, after all, a prey animal. Smells like prey, moves like prey. Sunny often finds himself naturally tracking his roommate's movements, the way a cat watches a mouse. He is very aware of Bruce's scent and the sound of his heartbeat, he can track him through these things alone. Bruce finds this....creepy. ("Stop staring at me, you dumb dog!"). He can't help the sinister feeling that underneath that innocent puppy face, Sunny would very much like to eat him.

....Little does Bruce know that Sunny's fixation does not include a desire to do him harm. It's more than he finds Bruce (with his itty bitty paw-hands and pretty coat and hippity-hop gait) extremely cute and naturally wants to protect him and keep him safe. Just like a little bunny~

....Or maybe his canine brain just sees Bruce as his prey and doesn't want anybody else to have him. Who knows for sure? Certainly not Sunny. Dat wallabooty is just too hypnotic (it'd help if you wore pants, Bruce).

I love the new look! I'm ashamed to admit that I said 'aw baby!' when this image popped up on my feed. Sorry Bruce!

D

Not Sunny’s expression 😂😂😂😂

“Sunny often finds himself naturally tracking his roommate's movements, the way a cat watches a mouse. He is very aware of Bruce's scent and the sound of his heartbeat, he can track him through these things alone. “ Got some yandere vibes there! I’m actually curious about that side of him.. 🤔

i really, really dig this design!! i was just thinking the other day about how bruce looked pretty dark and dull compared to the rest of the cast. and i think it worked! but i think this works too, and works better, haha. i do have to be That Guy and ask, though -- how do a brush wallaby and a kangaroo (if my memory serves, that WAS bruce's mom's species, right?) produce a whiptail wallaby?

lopoddity

Thank you! I'm also changing Bruce's dad's species to be a whiptail wallaby. :> So whiptail wallaby dad + eastern grey kangaroo mom = grey kangaroo older son and whiptail wallaby younger son. I'll draw a little family tree soon~

Dogs irl are kinda yandere. We took wolves and bred them to be blindly loyal, obedient, and codependent, to the point where a dog will put themselves in danger, or endanger another person, at their master's command. If I wanted to, I could take things in a horror direction, because while dogs as we know them are cute and lovable, I'm certain if they suddenly became sapient and bipedal we'd find their love obsessive, intrusive, and downright creepy. My dog Daisy just LOVES to sit and stare at me for long stretches at a time. Sometimes I get the feeling I'm being watched, and look up to find her peering at me from behind a doorway. If I go to the restroom in the middle of the night, immediately I'll hear her claws scratching at the door, and she WILL push the it open if it's been left ajar. I imagine this would all be terrifying if Sunny did this to Bruce. Fortunately for Brucie, I'm not gonna subject him to obsessive doggie love. Just an overly-friendly (but otherwise normal) roommate who isn't sure if he wants to eat Bruce or EAT Bruce.

hahahaaaAaAA yES!! BRUCE WITH ANIME EYES!!!! *chefs kiss*

Cool last name! If I'm correct Abalone is a reference to the pretty rainbow-y shells? Sometimes they give off pearls as well which could be a cool little nod to pony Bruce's pet sea bird pearl :3

Smol. That is a smol pretty boi. You keep proving me wrong that Bruce can't get any cuter LOOK AT HIM -Fey knows most mothers are biased about their offspring, but other mothers are WRONG, HER boys are clearly the best most beautiful babies ever born and would you just LOOK at what she made? Fey adored her sons, showering them in love since they were both born and she took a million photos of them dressed in cutsie outfits when they were young.

lopoddity

That’s especially interesting because marsupials are pretty icky looking when they’re born, like wriggling, flesh-colored jellybeans. Even as they finish their development inside the pouch, they spend a long time pink and hairless and awkward-looking. Silver was probably pretty hyped to meet his new baby brother, so when Fey finally deemed it safe to take Bruce out of her pouch for the first time to show the family, Silver is HORRIFIED at this gross, bald, baby Voldemort looking creature. “Mum, you put that thing back where it came from or so help me!” Eventually Bruce does fluff up and open his eyes, but Silver is forever disillusioned with the “magic” of babies

Robo87

Hey those are FEY'S icky flesh colored jelly beans thankyouverymuch and they are the most beautiful thingies she has ever seen. I LOVE joeys when they're at that bald baby stage in development. They're so ugly cute and precious right before their fur grows <3 I imagine for both her pregnancies Fey knew there was a chance she could birth a walaby and was honestly a tad nervous at the thought of taking care of a baby that smol. She was relieved her first son was a kangaroo like her (though she still had her moments of looking down at aforementioned Silver-jellybean in her pouch in awed disbelief that something that small came from her, and that this tiny thing was now the center of her entire universe) When Bruce came along she was better prepared to handle a smaller baby but sometimes she'd be guilty of hovering over Bruce a bit as he started toddling from her pouch and scampering after his rambunctious big brother. He was just so SMALL

Robo87

Oh! And in marsupial culture the first emergence from the pouch is a huge baby milestone, and is usually a very emotional event for the family as this is the first time they get to actually hold their babies. This is also usually when they name their children. Bruce was offically named on his emergence day as is tradition, but Fey and Silas couldn't decide on a name for their eldest son (ie, hated each other's picks and refused to budge) until he fuzzed up with his lovely fur.

*tucks these headcanons away into my marsupial pouch*

It goes both ways, too. Later Bruce will see Sunny gnawing on a stick- giving him his first real look at Sunny's fangs- and he immediately has his own sparkly fantasy about being the helpless prey of a handsome (and hungry) dog with billowing fur and anime eyes and giant yaoi hands

Robo87

*nervously throws another hc at you while I'm hot* Been thinking about Silas and Fey... and I don't think their relationship was probably the healthiest buuuuut I like to think there is an actual reason they're together. I feel like Fey has too much self respect for herself to stay in a relationship she didn't WANT to be in? I'm thinking....maybe Silas and Fey are a bit of kindred spirits that got together young? So hear me out.....Im thinking THIS Fey has quite a bit of backbone and a huge stubborn streak. She might be as pretty as a field of flowers but put a hand somewhere without permission and you're gonna be choking on your own teeth. Fey was a teenaged runaway, deciding to face the dangers of the street then deal with what was at home. She eventually falls in with a good organization that helps her get on her feet, but she's always gonna have some edge to her from her past. Her and Silas...they're tough, they're survivors, stubborn as mules and proud, and they are not perfect but what they have together works. I'm not sure of they'd ever say I love you to each other but it's there in their own version of love language. (Also Fey don't put up with Silas' closed minded shit and he's disturbed how turned on he is when she puts him in his place) Sooooo little food for thought with the buckaroo family. Don't mind me ;p

nnnngH YES

I LOVE THIS!! GIVE ME SELF-RESPECTING FEY ! ! !

I really like that Fuzzbutts isn't a universe of "humans but animals" but more "animals that have the same sentience as humans", because it opens up a lot of fun worldbuilding on how sapient predators might act compared to people. Humans don't have quite the same "prey drive" like a wolf or tiger might, I think it's really cool you're exploring that in Fuzzbutts. I also studied a ton of biology in college so I always love the science aspect of stories and worlds like this. I also think Priscilla and Bruce being friends jive really well with the fact that she's a cat and Bruce is a more quiet and introverted-type person. Cats tend to warm up to people quicker when you let them do their thing and allow them to approach you first, and I could see Pricilla being drawn to Bruce because he doesn't come into her personal space first and lets her approach him on her own. I also just really like the idea of them being able to sit together in silence for hours on end, just reading, studying, or occasionally showing each other funny memes on their phones, which as an introvert I feel is a very fun way to hang out.

KaeWolfe

Sunny definitely wants to "eat" you, Bruce 😏 Anywho, Bruce looks absolutely gorgeous! Really love his colors! Never thought of Beastars though hahaha How do carnivores get their meat? Can't remember if that was mentioned.

lopoddity

Carnivores can get protein from fish and insects, as those species are not sapient. They can also buy synthetic egg product/soy milks/fake meat (think Tofurkey) from the grocery store, or buy real eggs and milk off market vendors (hens and cows often sell their excess byproducts). If they want real meat however, their only (legal) option is lab-grown meat. It's produced from animal cells, and therefore said to be ethical, since it involves no slaughter. However it is quite expensive, so most predators can only afford to have real meat on very special occasions, eg. a birthday steak dinner, or an anniversary barbeque.
