Loving everyone's suggestions for what animals PB and Jam should be in Fuzzbutts! Feel free to keep suggesting over here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/fuzzbutts-pb-and-57126668

One suggestion that kept popping up was "otters", which I find really interesting, since otters have so much variety across their taxonomic subfamily. For example, there's the adorable, fluffy sea otter, which eat their meals on their tummies, use their body as a raft to keep their babies warm and dry, and hold paws with other otters to keep from floating away.

And then there's the South American giant river otter.

(cw for fish gore)

This thing. This thing. Six feet long and highly territorial, river otters run in packs that routinely mob caiman (imagine a smaller alligator), biting them to exhaustion and eating them alive. Groups of them are also known to drive off jaguars.

And like.....y'all know I live for contrast like that

So this is just loose concept art, I'm not locked into any ideas yet. With Option 1, you get big scary Jammie as a chaotic, unapologetic giant carnivore (and most certainly a career criminal), looking out for her adoptive "baby" twin brother, who is soft and innocent and not at all secretly troubled.

With Option 2, you instead get PB as a horrible murder noodle, perpetually stumbling over himself to look small and harmless and palatable so he doesn't spook people with his secret love of bloody fish. Jam, meanwhile, is teeny and fluffy and full of anarchy.

What do y'all think? I'll probably keep fiddling around til I get something that feels right

I think both could work if its contrast you're going for. A nickname for sea otters is ocean grizzlies, which they definitely earned. Definitely up Jams alley. Though I can just imagine PB being a sea otter and having his favorite rock to eat his favorite snacks off of. I realize this probably isn't helpful so I guess my real answer is option 2 :)

tricoloryn

both are a m a z i n g but i think i like option 1 because we'd really be able to see the absolutely terrifying/hilarious expressions jam could pull off, since if PB was the river otter he would subdue them more

eschirm

I think option 1 is my favorite of the two - the color schemes are just sooo good! And um, maybe I'm the only ancient one around here, but surely someone must remember that PB&J otter show...

LovelyScars5264

Jam is definitely perfect as the river otter and pb as the sea otter

MiyaLaFlorDorada

Oh it looks interesting, both are good.! I like the second a little better, because it is how to say it, unexpected? different? it's like a game with character and design. For context cuz I dont know how to put this ib words. There is a chapter in the manga "beastars complex" that deals with an akita inu that is a model, in that world there is a rule that the akita inu being considered one of the animals with the most cute faces, these dogs are socially pressured to behave cute, submissive, friendly and smile at all times, but the protagonist is the opposite is moody, dry, sarcastic and full of fierce personality, the story shows how frustrating the expectation and doble standards imposed by the media that certain species must suffer. It's a good spin off you should read it Anyway, I just adore chaotic little ones that look cute and kind giants with a scary side. But again both are options are cool! 👍

Bigsmile

As much as I love option one with the God murder, I love the unexpected contrast with 2 so much! Also, Jam being a cute adorable sea otter mob boss is my favorite idea! Everyone falls for the cutesy otter act.

DorkRaptor

Definitely PB as the river otter. Love the irony!

Nette Marie

I like both, but admittedly I like the smol criminal Jam idea. PB: *walks into room seeing a bloody corpse of an elephant on the floor. Looks at Jam* Jam: *looks back at polishing the skull* what? PB: Did he target kids or innocents? Jam: Saw him trying to lure a tiger and lion cub into a van. So using my irresistible facade of "look at me I'm smol, innocent, and in his case young looking" I lured him home where I promptly gave him a lethal dose of poison. PB: then why's his head detached? Jam: sending a message. He was a known offender. Also didnt get blood anywhere.

SmilesPerHour

That's... wow, this is quite a dilemma. I think they both work well as otters, but I can't decide between the typical 'vicious giant' and 'adorable teeny' of #1 or the physical-emotional contrast of #2. I mean personally, I think gentle giants are adorable, but on the other hand, the first picture of teeny sea otter PB is just so adorable! It ultimately comes down to what you like best, Lop. Do you like Jam better as a hulking, agile predator or a deceptively cute ankle biter?

lopoddity

You're not. :) The "do the noodle dance" song was stuck in my head the whole time I was drawing this

Robo87

Im honestly torn, I really like both concepts! But I guess personally I kind of like their appearances to somewhat match their personalities for the simple fact I just love Jam being unapologeticly a force of chaos and LOOKS IT. People are vaugly or outright uncomfortable around her (except family and friends) because of her looks and attitude. I guess I like that contrast to her having a HUGE soft side for her fam and twin especially. You don't expect that from her I'm not totally sure about a river otter for Peebs (though fluffy suits him better imo) but it def fits Jam! Can't wait to see more concept art

Emma Breslauer

Ooooh I love the idea of them deciding to be twins cause they're both otters! And while I do really like both options, personally I think option 1 just fits their personalities a lot more! A big part of PB's frustrations were other people not taking him seriously and babying him, which I think fits with a cute sea otter design better. Plus it makes it really cute that PB is a sea otter cause that's a cute fact he gave Midnight after she told him about sailors eating each other lmao.

Possum

Well shit. Both are awesome. As a smol agent of chaos irl, I absolutely love the idea of Jammy being a tiny mob boss protecting her giant softy “twin” brother. But the first option suits them both so well too!

feathermaws

I personally love the idea of soft noodle Peebs and mini feral chaos monster Jam

The Marvelous Mistake

Honestly I think option 2 really fits their personalities. Jammie as a sea otter would quickly learn from a young age how to leverage her cuteness for her own nefarious purposes. At the same time, I could imagine over time it being a kind of rebellion against how the world perceives her. Perhaps sea otters would face a degree of something similar to infantilizaton? All others see is the "cute widdle otter" and overlooking the fact that Jam is still just as much of a fellow predator as PB is (and she has the sharp chompers to prove it.) Meanwhile, baby PB just wants to make friends so badly. He's taller than some of the other kids sure, and kinda lanky. He trips over his own tail a lot ever since his last growth spurt. He wanders over to a group of children playing ball and shyly asks if he can play too, and they say yes! PB gets so excited as they let him join in, passing the ball back and forth just like they tell him to and they start joking back and forth. Well PB finds one of those jokes funny enough that he cracks up - and suddenly, one of the kids is screaming. He startles, and his stomach drops seconds later when he realizes it's *him* they're screaming at. Poor little PB covers his mouth and stutters out an apology before running away, tears welling up. I could see PB and Jam once they find each other sticking together at first for the mutual benefit. Jammie recruiting the quiet dorky kid no one really talks to because he's strong and kinda scary looking and tall enough to help her reach the cookies that the home keeps out of reach of most of the other kids, including herself. He'll do basically anything she says and makes for a fantastic minion in her opinion. PB happy that she isn't afraid of him and that as they spend more and more time together, the less the other kids seem to be too. When Jam is by his side they'll ask her to do things and every time, without fail, she says that PB has to be included too or she doesn't want to participate. Soon it's well known the two are a package deal and he and Jam hang out pretty much every waking moment, pulling schemes or doodling or playing dress-up with the old hand-me-down clothes in the chest the orphanage has. One day someone on the staff jokingly refers to them as "the twins" and it just sort of...sticks. I don't know, I just have a lot of feelings about the idea of tiny punk sea otter swindling you out of your inheritance and Cupcake threatening to break you in half if you even look at her sweet, clumsy dork of a river otter sibling wrong.

PrairieGhosted

I think u will come to the right call however u feel , but IMO I think it depends on if you want there to be that like, physical weight/height & physical threat behind Jams shenanigans or not ? like if she was a giant otter she would be a lot more threatening and I think that would impact how she interacts w the world and her character tbh in some ways ! I think either path has fun writing w both characters tho , but I feel like having her be able to follow up on her shenanigans w her own force would also make PB sorta shift his relationship w her too , whichever way it goes

Vicky Hadley

River otters really do have that chaotic evil vibe lol I feel like option 1 would let you push their expressions really far with the intimidating and adorable match up But either way everything you make is 100 so go off~✨

Lory

*rapidly claps* GOOD CONCEPT GOOD EXECUTION I honestly can't choose between these two because both work real good for their characters. I think I like Jam more as a smol gremlin, mainly because she has used Smokescreen as a silent hit man and big scary boy for her shenanigans. Seems right that she would act as kind of a ring-leader to much bigger, more intimidating folks, with her as the evil mastermind.

Doglover502

They're each otter's half ^^ Man I can't decide. I really like them both. Cause option 1 makes more sense with their personalities and I think it fits their color schemes better. But I like how option 2 plays on its head with their personalities more which fits for Fuzzbutts (like how Jude is secretly a softie despite being a huge wolf)

Colbyr

hhhhahAAH WOW THAT'S NIGHTMARE FUEL THANKS!!!! I have to go with option one, personally. Imagine PB just having no idea that other people find Jam scary (because to him, she's his protector, would never hurt a fly, super nice, etc. etc.) and has no idea why, when other animals are even a little rude or condescending to him, they look over his shoulder... and slowly look up.... and seem to make eye contact with someone right behind him.... and go pale, and apologize, and flee with their tails between their legs. When PB turns around, the only person there is Jam, and she's not scary at all! (Bonus points if he starts to get this misguided conception that HE'S the scary one, somehow)

Kakeru_k9

I love the otters idea!!! Otters are such fun and curious animals and I think they fit well with PB and Jam. I think option 2 would be great, I love the contrast of their sizes against their respective personalities. Also I feel you already have something similar to option 1 in the cast with the soft brother and big scary looking sis with Sunny and Jude, but either way can work :)

Doglover502

I like to think whichever option you pick, the sea otter "cuter" twin definitely had many opportunities to be adopted before the Sweets, but turned them all down because they were a "package deal" with their "fiercer" looking river otter twin ("you take both of us or none of us") that would scare parent prospects off. The Sweets were the first and only ones they met that weren't frightened away by those big teeth and bloody eating habits

Haley Riggs

I both love, work, and study animals. Given that the most recent post shows jam looking just slightly murderous, and PB being a precious bean. I have a few suggestions in regards to related animals that contrast each other in terms of behavior. 1. Kiwi and a cassowary. Kiwis are small and precious while cassowaries can and will make someone wear their ass as a hat due to their unpredictability. 2. PB as a ferret and Jam as a meerkat. Ferrets nip but are usually pretty social creatures. Meerkats can and will bite fingers off if presented. 3. European badger and honey badger. Honey badger explains itself 4. (Probably my personal favorite) PB becomes a fennec fox, and Jam becomes an African wild dog. If Jam's personality and backstory of being a cutthroat business woman, while also being protective of her little brother, then it's pretty perfect. African wild dogs have one of the highest success rates when hunting, somewhere around 80-85%. That, and these dogs make sure that the younger or weaker members of the pack/family get to eat first so no one is left behind.

KaeWolfe

PB as a river otter looks scary but is actually very sweet. Jam as a smol sea otter to sneak in tight spaces (not sure how big but they look smol here lol). She could also use her adorable look to fool people. Option 1 with PB being cute and adorable and Jam big scary lol I can totally see both

pookaWOODS

River otters are fucking terrifying dude ha ha This is a really hard decision. Also, in the second pick reminds me of Finn and Oddball.

lopoddity

yeeeah that's kinda what I was thinking, if Jam was big/scary enough to threaten people herself, she wouldn't need the assistance of larger carnivores like Cupcake, Smoky, and Montezuma. I think her being smol fits with her tendency to get in over her head, and it's not like her pink pony counterpart was ever particularly big and menacing.

lopoddity

ahh i hadn't considered that i DO already have a scary sister/smol brother thing going on already, thanks for bringing that up, good note

Syd D.

I'm partial to Jam being the big scary one because we all know how safe PB would be with a bodyguard like THAT

Kakeru_k9

No worries! Keep up the great work, really looking forward to the development of Fuzzbutt world and characters!

Angsty Ram

I like PB being big ol’ scary compared to his rather optimistic and loveable personality with Jam being… smol chaos ✨

Dean

omg...Small Jam n big PB absolutely.

FROSTBURNE

tbh, I'm fond of both of them, but I feel like the contrast of the second picture is befitting of them as ponies. PB as a river otter would be appropriate since he's the considerate but awkward type, and Jam as a tiny fluffy criminal is a great idea. imagining a cute little sea otter next to a big burly body guard is so entertaining in my mind

TiredGremlin

Please do option 2 I am BEGGING

Sirsapling

I think it would work well if they were both river otters, the sea otters are nice but feel like they kind of lack some expressiveness? I kind of like the idea of PB and Jam being the SAME species because then you really get to see their personality contrast against each other rather than just their species doing it. Like if they were both river otters you have this big soft noodle and BEAST OF THE DEPTHS, or both sea otters with one fluff ball and one goblin. But I do still love the different species options!

Vio_dacreator

Option 2!! Teeny fluffy and full of anarchy!!

Gleeman and Artist

Personally, I love option two. I just love tiny gremlin characters who are full of anarchy.

Jason Hutzel

option 2. little con artist looking all sweet and innocent
