so for most of fuzzbutts so far i've been adhering pretty closely with animal biology/behavior, and it's been fun! But. Insisting on accurate biology is opening myself up to a lot of nitpicking (even from myself) and maybe leaving me feeling a bit stifled. you all know me, i like things that are silly and dumb. i've been wondering if fuzzbutts could use a little more silly, dumb ideas.

So! Snake people. Sneeple. Thinking about how to draw anthro snake citizens.

Option 1: So this is how I'd default design a snake person in Fuzzbutts. It's just a snake. But with a silly hat! :3 As snakes don't have limbs to manipulate the world around them, I imagine sneeple would use their tails as a little grippy tentacle. Using their tails, they can wave, use a fork, draw a picture, and buy more hats. They run into trouble doing tasks that require two limbs (eg. chopping veggies, playing an instrument), so I imagine there's lots of accommodating devices on the market for them to use.

Option 2: A little snake man! A snan. Another option is to give sneeple tiny, almost-vestigial limbs. The limbs are probably not strong enough to walk or climb with, but they are able to stand at the kitchen counter and chop up some bell peppers for savory sneeple soup.

What do you guys think? :>

i know this post is almost 3 years old but i just remembered it out of the blue lol i think the 'arms, but no legs' route would work the best; it still lets the snakes retain their snake-ness without creating too many problems to solve. plus it opens up the potential for extremely niche jokes like snakes and legless lizards still get confused for each other by most critters, or how snakes are actually 90% torso but nobody notices and then subsequently being horrified

Cam

Please no legs.....anything but legs

glimwoods

i absolutely love concept 2 😭 their little wiggly limbs give me joy

Dragonseeker

Maybe just little arms, foregoing the little legs? The legs give it an odd look but I think the little arms would be cute :3

shield

hmmm, if you're gonna give em limbs, stick with just the arms, i think. otherwise they look too much like regular lizards

FloweryFruitFangs

As a huge lover of snakes I'm a bit biased for their normal, noodled and legless selves. One of the core appeals of snakes for me is that they don't have any legs or arms. It's unique for a terrestrial animal of it's size. Concept 2 looks a bit too similar to a lot of salamander's anatomy for my liking. But I mean, it /is/ cute and goofy! :D

MEllegoo

I personally prefer option one. I think it might bring in some interesting interactions and challenges to write about.

yaboyrobin

2, but just arms personally. no legs. otherwise, one would be better

eschirm

Omg they're adorable, I love the sneeple so much! I like option 1 the best but either way, their bright colors and those snekky smiles are just to die for.

Grace Merry

They both look adorable! Personally I really like the second one. A Centaur's Life is an interesting (kinda weird) manga that has various fantasy species living together that's got a lot of worldbuilding in how certain species live. It may be helpful if you're interested! There are snake people similar to V2, although I think they're a little more humanoid

Melody Williamson

I think they should just be normal snakes for consistancy. (Unless you plan on making everything else more fantasy themed) Another option If you really want a snake-like animal but with limbs, you can do skinks. Many of them look really similar to picture 2. The mole lizard is basically a snake but with front arms. There are also legless lizards called glass lizards. It could be interesting as a evolutionary thing if like, snakes in fuzzbutts never evolved a high level intelligence because of a lack of limbs to manipulate objects, and are all basically just normal animals. The glass lizard however - whos ancestors had limbs, could still have a high intelligence but with no limbs.

THEY'RE BOTH CUTE OMG <<33 I think you can do a variety of designs depending on what kind of character the snakeys are. For example, if you made Peanut Butter into a sneeple, he would look really cute and goofy with little arms and adorable clothes. But if Moondancer was a sneeple, it would fit him better to be limbless and more animal-like to show deeper implications of his character. But it doesn't need to be limited to "limbs=good boy" and "no limbs=bad boy". Play with the designs, and figure out what works best for each character. After all, there are over 3K species of snake with highly diverse body types and patterns! Sneeple could be similarly diverse, with some just having limbs while others don't.

Robo87

I am torn lol like I think snakes are aborbs as they are buuut them lil arms are cute af and you don't see anthro snakes with limbs very often, but I can see how they're difficult to translate to anthro because....well they're just a giant long neck. I agree little legs wouldn't quite look right but I don't hate the arms at all. It's cute and quirky and honestly maybe anthro snakes WOULD naturally evolve some kind of limbs to keep with the other people?

TheHaywaiianHorse

I'd say a combo of both concepts. I can see it working with mainly the snake body with the front limbs. Adding legs makes it come off as just a long lizard like a komodo dragon or whatnot.

Bigsmile

I like one personally. And though two is goofy fun the legs make them seem like weird lizards 😅

Angsty Ram

I like option two but maybe it’s look a bit better without the itty bitty legs though they do make me giggle

Robo87

Changing my answer. The more I look at 2 the more I love it lol My vote is officially for 2 WITH them teeny legs BUT I think itd also be natural if some sneeps didn't have legs. Maybe smaller types are more likely to have them? Like I imagine an anaconda (don't want none) would only find those little limbs more annoying then anything else? I mean they're HUGE snakes, heavy and long. I can see some of them having arms but legs would be useless for their weight, where a smaller say corn snake would be quite happy with them. Though of course big snakes doesn't automatically mean they WOULDNT have limbs, any more then a smaller one means they get them. I think like most things itd be based on genetics

tricoloryn

i like the option of arms but no legs, as some other people mentioned. it keeps them from being just plain snakes in a world of anthro animals, while also keeping them from being too similar to lizards

SketchyBug

2. Absolutely 2. Also I see that strawberry shortcake reference.

Emma Breslauer

Ooo, I don't know! Personally I'm leaning more towards option 1, but I think I'd like option 2 if it was just teeny arms without the legs! Easier to keep the slithering aspect there I think. But I also really like the just a snake with a hat option; they could also wear like like sock sweaters and ribbons and stuff!

lopoddity

u rlly just dropped "snake wearing a sock sweater" like that wasn't gonna shoot a harpoon through my heart huh

Gleeman and Artist

I like option 1, personally. I love snakes so I'm happy to see they're going to be in fuzzbutts.

feathermaws

I agree with Emma. Opt 2 with only the arms. Adding the legs kinda reminds me of a salamander or lizard crossed with a snake

PrincessMuffinArt

2 is my favorite! Anthro snake characters are fun! I personally have a “they can transform from noodle to anthro” compent for my snake characters but I love the way you drew #2!

Doglover502

Maybe you could have both. Like option one is a standard snake, but the second option could be for like snake/lizard hybrids (like a python with little legs cause their dad's an alligator)

lopoddity

"Unless you plan on making everything else more fantasy themed." I mean.....Fuzzbutts already has little bits and pieces that detour away from biological accuracy for the sake of fun. Sunny has bright blue paws. Wildly different species can produce fertile offspring. When I introduce birds, I was planning on giving them cartoony wings where their feathers work a bit like fingers, so they can hold things. There is a bipedal shark. Why not lean into the silliness? I feel like the more I restrict myself into making everything as accurate to irl animals as possible, the higher the odds that I eventually write myself into a corner. Introducing a touch of kooky gives me a little wiggle room. Also, I want FB to feel more uniquely MINE, not just like...an odd Zootopia offshoot. I'm not sure if things will get quite as weird as legged snakes, but yeah, I'd like to add a bit more weird. :>

Onefoursix Tym

I prefer #1, give me the classic snoodle anyday

Doglover502

Also, maybe it's the hats, but both options give me massive Strawberry Shortcake vibes

Sirsapling

I gotta say I think I’m leaning 1, something just feels a little odd about giving snakes extra arms when other characters are simply bipedal forms of other animals. Snakes can still fit in with an anthro world I think, viper in kung fu panda for example!

Sirsapling

You could also hve a little technological option? Maybe little robotic arms have been designed for sneeple to be able to use, like a prosthetic. They might not have the same dexterity as their tail, which sneeple might still default to, but it can help with simpler tasks like opening doors, grabbing things from shelves, being able to hold two things at once

kiliick

i vote 2!! love those little legs 🥺

Melody Williamson

Oh ok. I didnt know there was a shark person. But ya if you want a snake-like person but with legs that is more "realistic" I just think skinks can be a fun option.

LovelyScars5264

When you add legs they turn into lizards

Gale

i prefer option 1!!! i think you could do a lot of fun things with their legless noodle bodies in an anthro world. i like the teeny footsies on 2 but i feel like that design could be saved for a lizard..... a blue-tongued skink maybe

B33B069

how about just arms? like Serperior from Pokemon?

SmilesPerHour

#2 with vestigial arms sounds okay to me. It's hard to stay perfectly within the lines in an anthro fantasy story, and it could allow for some fun designs and scenarios!

ApofisNecros

How do you manage to produce such weapons grade cuteness? I'd say number 2, but Kung Fu Panda + Rick and Morty have shown me that biologically accurate snakes can still be perfectly functional with a little creative input. Either way, more adorable Sneeple please. xD

Lex

Personally I think regular no-limbs snakes would work just fine! Lots of other anthro art sources (Kung Fu Panda, for example) have snake characters without limbs. But if you want to go with the vestigial limbs, maybe just the arms? With the legs they look a lot like lizards at first glance...

Colbyr

I think option 2 could be really fun and help you not feel stifled anatomy-wise, but I do think option 1 can still work! It's really up to what you want to draw the most. That being said, while seeing this I was struck with the mildly horrifying mental picture of the limbs being retractable. Perfectly smooth snake one second, and the next, there are little bumps where the arms and legs would be.... then the bumps grow into stumps... then longer, and suddenly there are little fingers, and watching this whole thing would just be so unsettling for some reason, but that's what my brain provided me with.

B33B069

that is terrifying and i love it

D

I think just arms? So a nice in between of the two :>

lopoddity

it's like when Stitch retracts his extra legs. Complete with horrible wet bone-twisting noises

DragonCookies

BABIES THEY'RE SO CUTE I def feel like Option 2 would open up more opportunities for creativity and not limit your snek characters compared to their other limbed companions. I feel like just having arms could also work too, especially if they wanted to slither fast they could tuck their little arms onto their sides and just go nyoom

LionPrideProductions

I really like the idea of giving them hands and feet. It's something that hasn't been done yet, and I love how cute it looks!

Colbyr

YES this was exactly the reference I was thinking of but my brain couldn't say what it was from for some reason. I see you had the brain cell

Unity Bringer

I like option 2 but with only arms and no feet. SLITHER SNAKES PLEASE. But with hands is good.

Paddiefrog

I love both >v< happy to see you use whichever

Nimbose

I agree with Dream; you could go the way of the Naga and let them have arms but no legs... They get to have arms but can also SLITHER. uwu
