"Criminy, Virg, how many heart attacks do you respond to every month? And yet I still catch you shovelin' trans fats and sugar into your face every mornin'."

"Well maybe I wouldn't have to settle for stale donuts if you finally learned how to cook. That tuna casserole you made last week? You oughta feed it to your terminal patients, I bet it'd put 'em outta their misery for good."

"Oh fuck you, Virgil. I hope the ambulance runs you over today."

"Love you too, stripes."

hyenasssss

So we've already met Virgil, our mysterious figure from Sunny's past. Virgil is a spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta), and one of his more notable relationships is with our fair lady here, Savannah. She's a striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena), and also a very, very, verrrrry loose expy of Rosemary. More distantly inspired than anything else.

Virgil and Savannah are foster siblings. Although they are not blood related, they grew up together in a group home, paired up because of their similar species. Hyenas are pack animals, so although Virg and 'Vanna had little in common, they nonetheless clung hard to each other through their unstable adolescence and have maintained this bond into adulthood. As both of them lived out their childhood in lonely poverty, so routinely failed by the system meant to protect them, both hyenas decided to pursue careers where they could help people in need. Virgil is (was?) a paramedic. Savannah is a nurse. To their patients, both siblings are dedicated, professional, kind, and caring. To each other, they are assholes.

Savannah's career is a major source of stress in her life. Between the long hours and demanding duties, she also has to deal with how herbivore's natural unease around carnivores is greatly amplified in a medical setting. In a hospital, prey animals are ill, injured, vulnerable, and frightened- every instinct they have tells them to bolt in the face of a prowling predator, even one smiling and wielding a stethoscope. Further compounding the issue is a rather nasty, persistent superstition around scavenger animals (eg. hyenas, vultures, etc), who are thought to be bad omens, harbingers of death and decay- not exactly the face an ill patient wants to wake up to. Savannah's only concern is helping people- but she has been bitten, kicked, clawed, and verbally abused- all by panicky prey animals that see her as a monster. No matter how small and sweet and friendly she makes herself, it never seems to be enough. She's....frustrated. None of the herbivore nurses have to contort themselves the way she has to. It's exhausting.

Fortunately, Virgil understands her situation perfectly. Virgil deals with people who are sometimes actively dying-injured in accidents, betrayed by their aging bodies, bleeding out on the pavement. Virg receives the very worst of the herbivore fight-or-flight instinct, and he too must stay calm and pleasant throughout it all. As Virg and Savannah know and trust each other deeply, they drop all pretense around one another. In each other, they have the space to be frustrated, to vent, to be mean, to be themselves, to be carnivores. Although they snap at each other frequently and never seem to have anything nice to say to one another, they're the closest thing to family they have. So they have each others' backs, no matter what. 'Vanna can call Virg for an assist with an unruly patient anytime, and he'll be there. He might not like her shitty casserole, but she'll still make it for him, and he'll still eat it. They sit quietly with each other when their patients die. They might not be good at being siblings, but they are, nonetheless.

Savannah has found a place to release her bottled primal instincts as a member of Jude's punk rock grrl group, Maul Madness. She plays the bass, sings, and writes lyrics dripping with sex, violence, and mayhem. Her stage persona is quite different from the kindly nurse she plays in her day-to-day life.

Virgil too will eventually find an outlet for his own frustrations as a carnivore, though his strategy will prove much less healthy than his sister's.

I would very much like to give them a smol smooch and will accept any injury that comes with that

Both siblings will mess you UP if u so much as look at the other one wrong. They both claim to hate when the other acts protective ("I can fend for myself, you dingbat") but it's kind of like their sibling love language. Also, on a punny note: there's a pretty big scrubs company irl named 'Figs', and my first thought on seeing Sav in scrubs was 'Pigs'. Relevant? No. Did it make me snort (ironically) when I thought of it? Yes.

WAH savannah is so pretty 🥺❤

I always find the world building elements in Fuzzbuts super interesting.

Savannah's design is absolutely on point omg.

Interesting development. I'm glad these hyenas are pursuing their desired careers despite all the pushback and harassment they'd receive from their herbivore patients (and maybe even coworkers, now that I think about it? I hope their work environment isn't /too/ hostile for the sake of thier mental health.) At least they have each other to lean on. I really like Savvy's design too! I also like how you keep incorporating animal behavior into your world in a way that feels realistic enough for them to still have a somewhat functioning society. I handle a lot of small animals for my field study work, and I know from experience how desperate their behavior becomes when they feel like they are in a life threatening situation. Normally passive animals that wouldn't ever consider attacking a human 100x its size will bite, scratch, and thrash in a desperate attempt to free themselves. That's why they instruct us on specific holding techniques depending on the animal, so they don't hurt themselves in the process. I don't enjoy stressing animals out, even if its ultimately for their own good at the end of the day. I wish they could understand me when I tell them everything's going to be okay. I dunno, maybe my reassurance wouldn't change their panicked reaction, even if they suddenly became sapient. But do any of Virgil or Savannah's herbivore patients apologize for their outbursts once they are in a better state of mind? Or at the very least feel guilty about it afterwords? I'd imagine it would be awkward confrontation either way.

I love Savannah! Shes so cool! I like her character very much! ✨

Does virgil get picked on by his sister and other female hyenas for being male?

lopoddity

By his sister, no- striped hyenas are not matriarchal like their spotted cousins. Savannah doesn't pick on Virgil for being male, she picks on him for being Virgil. Female spotted hyenas do indeed hold most of the power in their culture, families or "clans" are typically ruled by an elder matriarch/grandmother. Males are not really subject to bullying and violence as irl hyenas are, but they are expected to be docile and submissive, while females-who are bigger and stronger- are taught to be dominating and assertive. Whenever you see a spotted yeen in a position of power, it's usually a female. Some hyenas do find this aspect of their culture unfair and outdated, Virgil hasn't met enough hyenas to gauge for himself. Virg is a pretty typical male hyena, he's friendly and prefers to resolve conflict through words (and manipulation), and often rolls over whenever Savannah gets angry. Still, Virg often jokes that he'd like a bossy lady hyena in his life that ISN'T his sister. Virg wouldn't mind getting pushed around by a pretty face...

Oh yes, there was a frog in my bathroom this morning, and I can agree with you that wild animals do NOT want to be handled. I'm going to have nightmares about that frog. I FULLY cop to being a weenie there, I panicked the second I touched it. (But at least I was braver than my brother! He ran out of the bathroom.) Yes, some of their patients do apologize afterward. It depends on how courteous the patient is (you know, like patients who go out of their way to thank medical staff after saving their lives), but sometimes it's just too awkward for a patient to confront the issue. If one thinks of themselves as a good, fair person, it can be hard to cop up to kicking and shouting speciesist tirades at a nurse who was only trying to help. Some patients refuse to be held accountable for what they might've done while hurt/sick, and some stand by the belief that the siblings deserve it, what was the hospital thinking hiring a pair of filthy scavengers? Nursing (and emergency medical care) is a pretty thankless job, so Savannah is used to it. She and Virg do this not to hear herbivores stammering apologies, but because they feel a duty to help. Still, it does feel nice whenever Savannah is met with a little old goat shyly bringing her a flower bouquet to thank her for her care- or when Virgil is snatched up in a hug by the tearful mother of a kid he just saved. Also, whenever they get food as a thanks. Once a deer client mailed the sibs a gift of his freshly shed antlers- and the yeens were happy for days afterward gnawing on this rare, delicious treat.

Aaaaa!!! I love them! If you have questions about hospital stuff, please feel free to contact me (obviously I won't provide medical advice but). I kind of imagine that Savannah gets frustrated, too, because other nurses push her to...well, to reinforce boundaries. Got an elk in room 406 yelling about how he needs to see someone, *now*? Send in Savannah. Got an agitated, delirious patient? She has to stay out of the room so she doesn't freak them out further. She has to deal with dismissive doctors (ie, the vascular surgeon who is literally a rat), oblivious admin (water buffalo on floor 6 who doesn't believe a predator can be intimidated) - the patients are just another layer to the shit cake.

Oh I ADORE Savannah’s design I’m also immensely curious if Virgil’s maybe part of an underground fighting ring or something similar. Like a place where predators can vent out their aggressive instincts and brutally fight one-another without any restrictions or protective gear. On a somewhat similar note, I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on large herbivores and how they’re viewed in the society of Fuzzbutts. Carnivores are obviously not safe, but a good number of the most deadly land mammals in our world are herbivores, and I’d be curious to hear where they might stand in Fuzzbutt society because of that and whether they also might be viewed as dangerous or tend to face way less consequences since they’re still herbivores at the end of the day

lopoddity

Thank you. :) Large herbivores share a space with large carnivores at the very top of the social hierarchy and enjoy quite a lot of privilege. They are large, powerful, and imposing, with the strength to back it up- and furthermore, they are typically regarded as docile and seemingly harmless, as they lack the scary fangs and claws of carnivores. It always did bother me how so many animal stories depict prey animals as weak victims waiting to be devoured. Some of the world's most dangerous animals are big ol' plant-eaters. I mean, given the choice of being thrown into a lake with a hippo or a crocodile, I'd take the crocodile. At least with the croc I might stand a ghost of a chance. Hippos wake up every day and choose violence. So yes, big herbivores typically enjoy high status, and feel little to no fear around carnivores. After all, a buffalo citizen could easily gore a lion if they wanted to. For this reason, large herbivores are the most likely of all plant-eaters to be friends with carnivores, enjoying mutually beneficial relationships and business dealings. Some big plant-eaters however may go out of their way to antagonize and push around carnivores, especially smaller ones. Virgil once had his arm broken by a boar patient angry he wasn't being tended to quickly enough. Savannah is all too familiar with the hoof-scuffing, rumbling, and horn/antler/tusk brandishing big herbivores use to get their way. Still, both sibs would rather deal with a large herbivore than a smaller one, as big critters are less prone to panicking, and typically know to mind their strength. Between a mild-mannered enormous elephant and a terrified tiny hissing porcupine, the siblings will take the elephant every time. Nothing like pulling fifty quills out of your arm to get you rethinking your career.

After the image of Sunny’s nightmares of Virgil… I scared to see what his coping mechanism is lmao. Hoping it’s more underground fighting and less killing and eating people lmaoooo

DragonCookies

Oh strongly agreed. If you could manage to hold the crocodile’s jaws closed before it bites, you might have a fighting chance, but a hippo would crush you into a fine powder and not think twice. It reminds me of how the herbivorous dinosaurs in Jurassic Park are always depicted as these calm, docile giants when in reality they’d probably be even more dangerous than the carnivores. I would way rather deal with a few raptors than try and face off with a triceratops or stegosaurus. Those things could’ve easily overturned a car if they wanted to. But thank you for the insight! I love how much nuance there is in Fuzzbutts and the fact that predators and prey aren’t separated into little boxes deeming them dangerous or safe. It just feels so much more true-to-life and makes my biology brain very happy

lopoddity

Weird, what makes you think he does drugs? I don't recall saying that. Virgil is a professional. The only substance he abuses is shitty junk food from the break room

Bigsmile

Savannah is looking pretty rad! How are Hyenas, vultures, and other "scavengers " viewed by everyone? The omens of death statement got me curious if that's how herbivores view scavengers while predators look at them as cowardly? Anyway, love the art, keep it up!

lopoddity

Scavengers have to deal with the same negative stereotypes all carnivores face, with the added bonus of being seen as conniving, cowardly, and not as tough as "real" carnivores. There's also a STRONG superstition around them as omens of death, as they are thought to believe to be able to sense/predict death, or even thought to CAUSE death and disease. This is blatantly untrue. Savannah and Virgil would indeed say they can fairly accurately judge when someone is going to die, but this is because of their medical training, not any mythical scavenger witchcraft.
